Skills

You will need to choose two artists from

different historical and/or cultural
backgrounds. You may use the two of
the artists offered as an example in
class, or you may choose your own
artists.
You will need to research these artists
and an example of an artwork from
each to use for your analysis for
Outcome 3.
As a practice test, we will analyse,
compare and contrast as a class 2
artists who were both inspired by
popular culture, contemporary society
and consumerism:
1. Robert Macpherson: 'Mayfair:
(Swamp rats) Ninety-seven signs for
C.P., J.P., B.W., G.W. & R.W.' (1994-95)

qualities and how they have developed
styles and processed their cultural
identity in their artwork.

knowledge and prepare them for
Outcome 3.
-Which Art Elements and Principles can
you see?
-How does the artist use materials,
techniques and processes?
-How do you think they contribute to
the artists aesthetic?
-How do you think they contribute to
the meaning of the work?

artist is working with and why?
-Do you think the work uses any
symbolic imagery? If so, what and why?
-Identify any historical or contemporary
influences on the artists that may have
contributed to their work.

Once both artworks have been

compared and contrasted students will
be introduced to a range of other artists
from different backgrounds working
with similar themes.
Closure
Now that you have familiarised yourself
with what type of questions you should
be asking, and what kind of knowledge
is required to satisfy Outcome 3 you
should be considering which artists or
themes you wish to research and
explore.
It would be beneficial for your practice

part of your study, by

analysing artworks and
artists you will learn
invaluable models of inquiry
which will inform your own
artmaking practice.
Students look
over worksheet.
Student respond
to questions.

The research you will

undertake for Outcome 3
focuses on the visual analysis
of artworks and investigates
how artists have interpreted
sources of inspiration and
influences in their artmaking.
Cold call student:
Which Art Elements and
Principles did you identify in
Macpherson's work?
How does Macpherson use
the materials, techniques and

if you chose artists who work with

interest you so that you can inform your
own practice through your research.
You must have decided on your two
artists by next class, and began
researching two of their artworks. You
will need to complete a written
response to a set of structured
questions in class in week 13 (next
week) so you must be prepared for this.
The questions on the SAC will be similar
to those on the worksheet handed out
today. Stick it in your Visual Diary!

Can you please identify which

Elements and Principles
Macpherson utilized in his
artwork, and explain how and
why he used them.
