Description of process

plant.
The condensation plant serves for condensing the vapour
and for educting the condensation heat to the cooling
water. In the case of heating condensers the
condensation heat is used for heating up the water.
Furthermore, the arising condensate is lead back into the
boiler water circuit.
This condenser is a shell and tube type heat exchanger.
The vapour is conducted around the heat bundle and it
condenses (liquifies) at the heat exchange space of the
pipes. Below the steam inlet there is an impact plate in
order to protect the pipes against erosion due to beating
of drops, a hotwell is provided for collecting the
condensate.
In the condenser, low volumes of air and noncondensable gases are accumulated. In order to avoid an
increase of the operating pressure due to a deterioration
of the heat exchange, these air and gas portions have to
be sucked off. In the apparatus there is a sufficiently
sized partial space for cooling of these air and gas
portions in order to minimise the strain of the evacuation
plant due to the carried vapour.
For sucking off the non-condensable gases an evacuation

Technical Data Sheet: Water Systems

pH-Adjustment /
Rehardening
Filter Type RF
Description of pH-Adjustment / Rehardening Filter Type RF
The acid reaction of distillate in fresh water generators is
caused by dissolved Carbon-dioxide (CO2), which is released
from sea water during evaporation.

The Juraperle JW filter material is combined with pure quartz

sand as a basic layer in order to retain fine Juraperle JW
particles and iron/manganese precipitations generated during
the filtration process.

To avoid corrosion in the subsequent parts of the ships

distribution system (e.g. piping, storage tanks etc.), the
pH-correction of produced distillate is absolutely necessary.
The pH-adjustment of the distillate is effected during its
flow through the corresponding active Juraperle JW layer
in the pH-Adjustment/Rehardening Filter Type RF. In
addition, the Juraperle JW layer rehardens
(remineralisation) the pH corrected distillate.

Operating of pH-Adjustment / Rehardening Filter Type RF

Juraperle JW is a pure calcium carbonate from Jurassic:

CaCO3
The solubility of Juraperle JW in water is low and is not
insignificantly influenced by the water temperature. In
absence of Carbondioxide the solubility amounts to approx.
25 - 35 mg/litre; corresponding to a hardness of approx. 1,5 2,0 dH. Simultaneously to this rehardening process, the pHvalue increases from pH 5,5 - 6,0 (typical pH-value of
untreated distillate) up to pH 7,5 - 8,5.
In the presence of carbondioxide in distillate, the resulting
hardness increases proportionally to the Carbondioxide
content according to the below mentioned reaction
between Juraperle JW, Carbondioxide and water by
formation of the readily soluble compounds:
Calciumhydrogencarbonate (= Calciumbicarbonate)
CaCO3 + CO2 + H2O > Ca(HCO3)2
Proportionality factor: 10mg/l = ppm Carbondioxide
generate an additional water hardness of 1,3 dH.
The consumption of rehardening material amounts to
approx. 25 - 35 g/t distillate. Refilling is neccesary after
approx 1000 - 1400 operating hours. Values depending from
CO2 content in the distillate.

Initial Filling
Please refer to the information for basic layer (quartz sand) and
main layer (rehardening material Juraperle JW) stated in the
table on the back page. After start up, the water should flow
into the bilge until it is clear.
Topping up
In order to maintain constant pH-adjustment/rehardening of the
distillate as far as possible, it is necessary to refill the unit when
the filter rehardening material has been consumed down to the
sight glass. The rehardening material has to be topped up to the
upper weld seam as with initial filling.
Refilling
After approx. one year of operation, or if the taste of water
deterioates, the whole filling has to be renewed.
Back-flushing
If the pressure loss through the filter has increased by approx.
0,5 bar, the back-flushing process has to be carried out.
For further information, please refer to the technical data for
dimensions and filling quantities.

sea water is above atmospheric pressure and therefore
below boiling pressure. The sea water is then directed into
the first stage of the plant which is at a pressure below
boiling pressure. In order to return to a state of equilibrium,
part of the sea water flashes off such that the saturation
temperature corresponds to the pressure in the stage. This
process is repeated from stage to stage whereby the
