1. Introduction
2. Leadership and Leadership styles
An effective leader is one who helps group members attain productivity, including high
quality and customer satisfaction, as well as job satisfaction. (Leadership p. 109) This is very
different from a manager who manages tasks. Leadership operates including consideration and
initiating structure in two classic dimensions:
a) Consideration (human scale)
b) Initiation structure ( get it done)
The consideration dimension is associated with relationship-oriented attitudes and behaviors
including aligning people, openness to worker opinions, creating inspiration and visibility, giving
emotional support and encouragement. While the initiating structure has concern for production.
It relates to task oriented attitudes and behaviors such as adaptability to the situation, direction
setting, high-performance standards, concentrating on the strengths of group members, risk
taking, and execution of plans, hands-on guidance and feedback, ability to ask tough questions,
and organizing for collaboration. (Leadership p. 112-115) It is critical that a leader finds the
right combination of attitudes and behaviors that lead to organizational success.
Multiple leadership styles include the benevolent leader, the team leader, and the laissaez fair
leader. All of these leadership styles focus on shared decision-making. Another leadership style
is the autocratic leader who retains authority, make unilateral decisions, and is less concerned
with how group members perceive those decisions.

3. Conclusion
While this course has provided an in-depth view of leadership theory, the overriding
message is fairly clear. A leader is more than a some of their personality, traits, and
knowledge. A leader must be well grounded, ethical and moral, have a connectedness to
the people in their organization, possess a strong passion for the work, be creative and
open-minded, and have the ability to see into the future and a belief they can change that
future. Leadership is a technically challenging role because the leader is there to create
value for stakeholders. However, more importantly, it is an emotionally and mentally
challenging role because a leader goes to sleep at night knowing that the lives of so many
rest on their shoulders and that they must be thorough in their analysis and strategy to
protect those lives. The challenge and obstacles are monumental, and that is most likely
why so few leaders emerge in society who have a lasting impact.
