TO THE
PREFACE.
The aim ot this little manual is to increase piety and devo
tion among Catholics, by rendering a knowledge of Latin
available to a greater number than is at present practicable.
As every translation, however caretully prepared, falls far
short of the original, Catholics unable to read Latin lose
much of the beauty and sublimity of the offices of the Church,
and are debarred from one of the greatest helps to fervent
devotion.
Catholic public.

In answer
399. In Latin, there are no words corresponding to our yes and no.
ing a question the verb is usually repeated. Sometimes for yes we find eliam, (even
so), vero, (truly) ; for no, non, (not), minime, (by no means), and other similar ex
pressions. Questions are usually introduced by some interrogative word ; and are
not, as in English, distinguished by the position of the words in a sentence. Thus :
If the person asking a question expects the answer no, the question is introduced
by the interrogative particle num. Num hie malus homo est sanctus?
(Is this bad
man a saint?)
If the person asking a question expects the answer yes, the question is introduced
Nonne Jesus estDeus?
by the interrogative particle nonne.
(Is not Jesus God?)
If the person asking the question asks for information, without implying which
answer (yes or no) he expects, the interrogative particle ne is added to the first word
of the sentence, or to the most emphatic word. Bonusne est puer? (Is the boy good?)
