Lesson Objectives & Student Learning Targets

Cognitive: TLW identify and translate verbal cues into practice of overhand throwing.
Affective: TLW attempt to improve technical skill of the overhand throw in a positive manner.
Psychomotor: TLW use verbal cues to repeat the technique used to throw a ball with an overhand motion.

Lesson Assessment
Cognitive: TLW demonstrate understanding of the skill cues that correlate with the overhand throw, through verbal
repetition during said movement.
Affective: TLW communicate positive reinforcement towards himself and teammates, while pursuing mastery of overhand
throw.
Psychomotor: TLW demonstrate improvement in technique and accuracy to target, of overhand throw during culmination
activity.

Mathematical-Logical Intelligence:
Ability to think conceptually and abstractly, and capacity to discern logical or numerical patterns.
Skills - Problem solving (logical & math), performing experiments.
Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence:

Skill/Concept Taught

Skill Cues/Instructional Cues Used

Overhand Throw
The purpose of this activity is to practice throwing in
opposition and practicing multiplication tables.

Differentiated Instruction
Accommodations: Change throwing line to two different lines if the throwing distance is too far. Change the
targets on the wall. Can use a pair of dice and do addition instead of multiplication.
Modifications: Have students throw with both the dominant and non-dominant hand to enhance brain
connections.
The student could roll the ball instead of throwing it. You can change the throwing line to make it closer.

Students do not have balls

yet. Can work on motion
without worry of them being
distracted by balls.

Transition: split class in half and give pennies to one team. Gym/instant activity field boundaries will already be set up.

Start Time: 3:00
End Time: 10:00
Procedures:

Skill Cues or Concept Cues
(definition, etc.)

Reminders for the

teacher:

Students will be divided into 2 teams. A goalie zone is marked

off by a line of cones about 12 feet from the end of the gym on
both sides. The goalies will stand 15 pins up in the goalie zone.
The goalies job is to defend the pins in the goalie zone. All the
rest of the players will be lined up on their half of the gym at
center court. 1-2 balls will be distributed to each team to hold
until the signal is given.

Students split in half. Goalies

grab cones for their goal. No
one but goalies in goal zone.
Students cannot move with
the ball.

When the game begins, anyone without a ball can move to any
place they wish to go on the gym floor, but not in the goalie
zone. Only the goalies are to be in the goalie zone.
The players with the ball cannot move. Their only choices are
to pass the ball to another teammate or to throw the ball at the
other teams pins. They cannot roll the ball to make forward
progress. Once they throw or pass the ball they can move
anywhere.
If a player knocks the other teams pin down by the throw, that
player runs to the scoreboard and puts a point up for their

team. They then continue in the game. If a player knocks more

than 1 pin down with the ball, they score as many points as pins
that were knocked down.
Goalies are to continue to defend the pins and set the pins back
up as they are knocked down. Goalies must stay in the goalie
zone and are not allowed to score points for their team.
Allow goalies to set up the pins in any formation they want.

Transition: Have each team pick up all of their cones, pins, and balls, to bring to the teacher. Have students find two partners to
make groups of three. Then each group line up on center court line.

One student will stand by the way to retrieve the ball and run
to end of line, then thrower will become the retriever.

Have one student from each

group grab one ball. Make
sure that every student can
throw and reach the wall.

Transition: Begin practice of throwing for accuracy.

Culminating Activity
Start Time: 15:00
End Time: 22:00
Procedures/Organizational Diagram

The class is split into teams of 3 students divided by a center

line in the middle of the space. One student will throw the ball,
one student will retrieve the ball and one student will record
the answer on the white board to the multiplication problem.
All groups should be throwing away from the center line to the

wall space.

Every student will be able to

throw, run and retrieve, and
work on the math problems.
All students should be using
positive motivation to cheer
on their teammates and
opponents.

The object of the activity is to throw the ball from the center
line (throwing line) to the wall in the air in with an overhand
throwing pattern, as designated by the teacher. The wall is
divided into 3 sections.
The high part of the wall is worth 3 points
The middle portion part of the wall is worth 2 points
The low part of the wall is worth 1 point

*If the heights of the wall

makes it too easy. Targets
(circles) may be applied to
wall to make accuracy
throwing more challenging.
Or add just one bonus target
to challenge the more skilled
students, while other students
can choose any target or
height to aim for.

Student 1 throws a ball and hits the middle part of the wall.
He/she gets 2 points and then runs to wall to become the next
retriever.
The 3rd member rolls a die and multiplies that number times 2,
writes the answer on the whiteboard for the team and becomes
the thrower.
The 2nd student (original retriever) runs the ball back, after it
hits the wall, and become the next person to write the score.
Next thrower cannot throw the ball until he has written down
the score and has the ball handed to him from the retriever,
behind the throwing line.
The game ends when a team reaches 100 points.
Transition: Pick up all equipment and put into bins. Bring class back together to discuss closure.

Closure

End Time: 25:00
Procedures:

Reminders for the

teacher:

Recap skill cues for correct overhand throwing.

Discuss what sports this skill could be used for.
Discuss why you point at the target you are trying to hit, with
your opposite hand, and opposite foot.
