DISCUSSION

Permeability is the parameter used to measure the ability of rock to allow fluid to
pass through it. Mainly related to porosity with considering also the shape of pore
and path of flows. High permeability allow fluid to flow through it. Pressure may affect
the permeability of rock. The sample used in this experiment has thickness of 0.5 cm.
Fluid been used is water with fluid viscosity, is 1 cp. Pressure different can affect
the permeability thus the pressure set are 50 psi,60 psi and 70 psi.
The permeability of rock is depending on connected pore grain in the core
sample and the size of the pore. If the core sample contain larger amount of
connected pore, the permeability of the core will be higher. Same goes to the pore
size, the permeability will be higher if the properties of core contain large amount
pore size.
Based on this experiment, the type of rock can be identified. According to the
range value of permeability between 50 psi to 70 psi, which is 2.038 mD , 3.3439 mD
and 2.9532 mD . The permeability detected at 60 psi might be higher compare to
other pressure because the pressure is sufficient enough for the water to flow
through the rock. At 70 psi, the reading dropped because the pressure is exceeding
the sufficient value thus blockage to the path flow of water in the rock.
It can conclude that it is sandstone. The range of permeability is referred at
website of Introduction to Petroleum Geology which state that range of 1 to 10 is the
permeability detected for sandstone. The permeability value can allow the migration
of oil from one place to another place. For low permeability reservoir that range
between 0.1 to 5, it can be consider as tight or tight gas because there are more
pressure needed to squeeze fluid through a rock. So, it can conclude that the core
sample has potential to be poor reservoir for hydrocarbon in petroleum system.

CONCLUSION
As the conclusion, it can be said that the core sample tested in this experiment is
sandstone. This sandstone is categorized as a very fined sand. The result from this
experiment also shown that the permeability of rock is depending on the pressure
drop and it is depending on connected pore grain in the core sample and the size of
the pore. The type of rock is particularly sandstone because it is grey in colour and
indicate sandstone based on the low permeability as discuss before.
RECOMMENDATIONS
1.

The experiment can be repeated several time for every core sample to get

more accurate result and to get the average value of permeability.

2.

Make sure that distilled water always present in the container.

3.

Recognize the type of rock before the experiment to prevent from getting low

or no permeability.
4.

Make sure that sample rock have smooth surface to ease the procedure of

tightening the chamber lid.
