Evolution of the performance appraisal systems: A study of banking

sector in Bangladesh
Introduction
Performance management is the process of consolidate goal setting, training, performance
appraising and rewarding the employees who are working towards organizational goal.
Performance appraisal systems means evaluating an employees current and past performance
relevant to his/her performance standard. For performances management is one the key functions
of human resources management.

Statement of the problem


Now a days banking industry is a fast growing industry in Bangladesh. Peoples want to secure
their income and investment. As a result many new banks are coming up, new branches are
opening to fulfill the requirements of the market. So banking industry has become a largest
employment industry of Bangladesh. But some of the bank employees are not happy with their
performance appraisal system. They think that there are many scope to improve the performance
appraisal system. This study take place to know the employee satisfaction level towards the
banking industry performance appraisal system. From this study it will be understand that the
employee satisfaction and succession planning existing performance appraisal of the selected
banks.

Rationale of the study:


Performance appraisals are important for staff motivation, attitude and behavior development,
communicating organizational aims, and fostering positive relationships between management
and staff. Performance appraisal provide a formal, recorded, regular view of an individuals
performance and a plan for future development. In short, performance and job appraisals are vital
for managing the performance of people and organizations. They are used to maintain and assess
the person's grow and development for promotions. Manager must maintain the visibility of the
performance evaluation program because it may expedite the authenticity of the program.
Research on performance appraisal has tended to focus on how various purposes of performance
appraisals influence the appraiser and the rating outcome, overlooking the impact of the
perceived intent of the appraisal on the employee being evaluated. Several researchers have
examined employee reactions to the performance appraisal system around the globe. But in
Bangladesh, research activities related to the purpose of the appraisal remain restively
unexplored. For the above context this study Evaluation if the performance appraisal system: A
study of banking sector in Bangladesh is chose to understand the current condition of banking
sector.

Objects of the study


Board objective
The board objective is to evaluate the performance appraisal system of banking sector in
Bangladesh.

Specific objectives
More specifically the study is intended to achieve the following objectives

To see satisfaction level of employees, towards the existing performance appraisal system
in the sample study organizations.
To evaluate the impact of performance management system on the firms performance.
To recommend some measures to overcome the problems of existing performance
appraisal system.
