Introduction

Within the road construction project Rosenstein Tunnel, an extension of the Berger
Tunnel -part of the B10 highway- is programmed. Due to this, the existing green
area surface built up over the tunnel would be extended, promoting the connection
between Bad Canstatt with Stuttgart Ost, replacing the existing bridge (Berger Steg)
for a new footbridge. This new bridge will not only make accessible -by a barrier-free
design- two sides of the city, but will be also part of a bigger green connection
between Neckarpark, Schlossgarten and the green corridor through the river bank.
For ensure the navigation through the river, a clear high from 6.30 above the water
surface must be maintained.

Concept: Sustainability
The main goal of the project is to create a bridge that contributes to the city and its
sustainability, taking in consideration different elements that could promote this
value.

Green connection
The present situation of the green areas within the Stuttgart area is clearly defined
by a green U park, formed by the succession of Schlossgarten, Rosensteinpark
(and Wilhelma) and Killersberg park. From the other side, greening areas are
neglected to the Neckarpark and a small corridor on the river bank, but not
integrating the river itself within the river bank activities. There is a disconnection of
both sides between each other and with the river. This project attempt to stimulate a
connection between users and the river through gardens and urban furniture near
the river bank, creating spaces where people can stay, chill and relax on this side of
the river.
On the other side of the river, Neckarpark is the nearest green area on the other
side of the Knig-Karls-Brcke. A bound between this park and the river can benefit
the bridge usage and the connection between green areas from both sides of the
city. A triangular esplanade near the camping area with a cafeteria, bike parking and
places to sit will enhance users river experience.
It will also represent a benefit for the ecosystem -which would be use as a value for
creating those spaces- due the interaction between both sides wildlife. Water here
plays also a big role, boosting vegetation growth. On the river bank, the design will
consider diverse aquatic flora. Rainwater most accumulated on the Wasens
western side- would be benefit for a new green space on this area.

Faster and barrier-free connection

Stuttgart bicycle usage is being disrupted by its geography. A path for crossing the
river creating the faster connection possible is a goal.
For users from the B10 riverbank bicycle lane (Stuttgart Ost) wanting to go to Bad
Canstatt and viceversa-, it makes no sense to use this connection. From one side,
the Wasen area acts as a barrier, so people wanting to go to Bad Canstatt needs
also to follow the bicycle lane until the Knig-Karls-Brcke intersection.
Also, the nearest way for users to get into the B10 bicycle lane is to get in on
Talstrae, 1,5 km aprox from the other entrance at Knig-Karls-Brcke. Both
entrances have already a connection with an existent bridge for cars, bicycle and
pedestrian.
For users from the Wasen bicycle lane wanting to go to Mineralbder and
Schlossgarten and viceversa-, this is the faster way to connect both places, instead
of using the Talstrae-bridge, or the Knig-Karls-Brcke. This path will promote biker
and pedestrian travels between both areas, by reducing the travel time, and also
enhancing existing spatial barriers, such as steep slopes, stairs, and the river itself.
A path connecting the Wasen and the Neckarpark bicycle lane is proposed for
connecting the river bank and the park.
