OUR MISSION RESOURCING THE WORLD

We contribute to increasing access to resources as well as
preserving and renewing them

DEVELOPING
ACCESS TO RESOURCES:
Veolia offers operational
solutions that consume fewer
environmental resources and
are more economically
efficient, so as to expand both
the potential and the accessibility
of the resources available.

PRESERVING
RESOURCES:
Veolia develops solutions
to conserve resources and
optimize their use, while
protecting their quality and
efficiency throughout the
usage cycle.

REPLENISHING
RESOURCES:
Veolia provides solutions
for creating new
secondary resources
that will gradually offset
the increasing scarcity
of natural primary resources,
generating new opportunities for
social and economic development
that protect the environment.

access to energy
expand on a large scale.

Environmental services
provide support for
reconstruction and the
industrial growth.

A concern for sustainable

development gradually
emerges as a global
priority.

In the face of growing

scarcity, resource
management must be
reinvented to create a new
economic and social
dynamic.

Challenges facing industry

Some of the key challenges facing the water industry in the coming
century are:
Global warming: due to emissions of greenhouse gasses from fossil fuel consumption
and other anthropogenic activities

Depletion of phosphorus rock: phosphorus reserves are finite with many sources
predicting their depletion within the next 60 - 100 years

Water scarcity: the 2030 Water Resources Group have predicted, in their 2009 report
Charting Our Water Future, that by 2030 water demand will be 6,900 billion m3, but that
there will only be 4,200 billion m3 of available in existing water reserves

What are the market implications?

Direct cost risk:
Across sub-Saharan Africa shortages of electricity
are holding back economic growth by as much as
4% a year, reckons the World Bank.
Businesses are forced to buy generators,
Paying 50 cents or more per kilowatt-hour

Physical risk:
Water shortages - High tech industry
Use of 2.8 billion gallons of water during 3 months
Cost related to water use = $22,400,000
Value as a shortage risk = $200,000,000

Reputational risk:
Jewellery retailers across the UK and US with
combined sales of more than 3.5 billion have
pledged to reject any gold from an Anglo
American mine that threatens Alaska's wild
salmon industry.

The AnMBR can be at the heart of the biorefinery

The AnMBR combines anaerobic digestion with cross-flow ultrafiltration

Facilitates maximum renewable energy production
Ideally suited to medium strength wastewater containing high FOG and/or TSS

Solubilizes nitrogen and phosphorus - facilitating their recovery

Struvite precipitation possible

Produces an excellent effluent in terms of COD without any TSS

Direct application of RO possible

28

AnMBR at heart of the bio-refinery Nutrients

Nutrients are hardly removed in an AnMBR

COD removal is almost complete
Conventional nitrification / denitrification will require dosing of an external electron donor

In AnMBR permeate nitrogen and phosphorus will be in the form of NH4

and PO4
Opportunity for alternative technologies - struvite precipitation
Advantages of struvite precipitation:
80% to 90% PO4P
10% to 40% NH4N
Fertilizer income

BIOTHANE
Leading Anaerobic Technologies

29

AnMBR at heart of the bio-refinery Nutrients

Struvite precipitation limitation:

Due to solubility limitation not possible to have PO4 -P concentrations below 15 mg/l
To be economically viable struvite production should be at least 300 kg/d
Only limited removal of nitrogen ((MgNH4PO4.6H2O)

Alternative for nitrogen removal required

Anammox type technologies are ideal
