In Bolivia, the government promulgates the law of Earth Mother and Integral development
to living well, in this law is not allowed the use and commercialization of GM seeds.
However, in 2005 the seed of soy "Roundup Ready" was authorized to be used for feeding
of people and animals. At the moment, we use almost 1 million of hectares in this kind of
seed production.
In my opinion, the GM food is an attempt of the technology to resolve the problem of food
insecurity. GM food can be pest resistant and herbicide tolerant, a great alternative to the
use of tons of chemicals to fight with this problems.
Also, GM food can be disease resistant, cold and drought tolerant; important to fight with
the big loses of crops due to climatic adversities.
GM food can be modified to be enriched with A Vitamin, vaccines, and iron, and in this
way could be more helpful for undernourished populations.
Currently, the technology of GM food is directed to production of soy and corn beans; and
by reports, even though we are not directly exposed to it, we consume a lot of processed
foods with GM food as an ingredient.
I think that the fact of eat GM food is not the real treat, because we eat food of many
different species of vegetables and animals since ever, with many different DNA structures
and that doesn't change how we are.
The problem would be the economic issue, because the seeds are patented, and the global
consumption of these seeds could make some people and enterprises so much powerful.
Also, we could not predict the ecosystems changes that this new kind of vegetables can
cause, because the herbicide and pesticide effect can't be restricted or directed exclusively
to one species, and the knock on effect would be unpredictable at the ecosystem level.
