Description
AlsoknownastheGreatRealm,andwhileinfinitiesarepracticallycommon
throughouttheplanes,withtravellersspeakinggliblyofthebottomless
chasmoftheInfernoortheinfinitelyhotfiresoftheFirePlane,thesheer
sizeoftheAstralRealmisbeyond.Thegulfsbetweenstarsandtheslow
marchofalltimefromthefoundationoftheworldstotheirinevitableends
areasnothingcomparedtotheeternalvastnessoftheAstralPlane.
TheAstralPlaneisavoidsometimesshimmeringwhite,sometimes
coruscatingpurple,sometimesashiftingcolourthathasnonameinthe
tonguesofelforman.Itcontainsmoredemiplanes,pocketrealmsand
portalsthananyotherplane.Therestoftheplanesallthatexist,savethe
FarRealmsfloatamidtheGreatRealmandthustheAstralPlaneis
coterminouswithallothers.Italsoservesasthegreathighwayofthe
planes,andtravellersofallsortsarecommon.TheAstralPlanesTimeand
ArcanetraitscombinetoQuickenallspellscastontheplane.

AstralPlaneTraits

Subjectivedirectionalgravity:Thestrengthofgravityonaplanewiththis
traitisthesameasontheMaterialPlane,buteachindividualchoosesthe
directionofgravityspull.Suchaplanehasnogravityforunattended
objectsandnonsentientcreatures.Thissortofenvironmentcanbevery
disorientingtothenewcomer,butiscommononweightlessplanes.
Charactersonaplanewithsubjectivedirectionalgravitycanmovenormally
alongasolidsurfacebyimaginingdownneartheirfeet.Ifsuspendedin
midair,acharacterfliesbymerelychoosingadowndirectionand
fallingthatway.Undersuchaprocedure,anindividualfalls150feetinthefirstroundand300feetin
eachsucceedinground.Movementisstraightlineonly.Inordertostop,onehastoslowonesmovement
bychangingthedesignateddowndirection(again,moving150feetinthenewdirectioninthefirstround
and300feetperroundthereafter).
IttakesaDC13Wisdomchecktosetanewdirectionofgravityasafreeactionthischeckcanbemade
onceperround.AnycharacterwhofailsthisWisdomcheckinsuccessiveroundsreceivesadvantageon
subsequentchecksuntilheorshesucceeds.
Timeless:Age,hunger,thirst,poison,andnaturalhealingdontfunctionintheAstralPlane,thoughthey
resumefunctioningwhenthetravelerleavestheAstralPlane.

GettingthereandBack
AlmosteverytravelspellmaybeusedtoaccesstheAstralPlane.Evenahumbledoor,ifcastintherightplace,
canopenawayontotheGreatRealm.Therealsoexistspellssuchasastralprojectionwhicharespecifically
designedtobringtravellerstotheAstralPlane.
TheAstralPlanenevermingleswithotherplanesundernormalcircumstances,althoughmagicalaccidentscan
bringabouttemporaryvortices.SuchincidentsarequicklyrepairedbythePlanewrights.Naturalportalstothe
AstralPlanearerare,andusuallyoccurwherethefabricofrealityhaswornthinorlargenumbersofentitieshave
usedplanartravelspells.

ThereareaninfinitenumberofnaturalportalsleadingfromtheGreatRealmtootherplanes.Theseareknownas
colourpools.TheyformanddissolverandomlyasstormsrunacrosstheAstralPlane.

SurvivalontheAstralPlane
SurvivalisrelativelyeasyontheAstralPlanetherealmistimeless,socharactersneednoteat,drink,breatheor
evensleepiftheydonotwantto.Decay,illness,eventheonsetofpoisonishaltedontheAstralPlane.Dyinghere
takeseffort.
Thatisnotalwaysablessing.TheAstralPlaneisalmostcompletelyempty.Matterconsistsonlyofafewrare
islandsofstone.Whilethesubjectivegravityoftheplaneallowstravellerstoflyatgreatspeed,theastralgulfs
aremuch,muchtoolargeforacharactertogetanywherebycontrolledfallingalone.
Magicsuchasteleport,anaccurateplaneshiftoranastralvesselispracticallyarequirementforsurvival.
UnpreparedtravellerswhodoortotheAstralPlanecanfindthemselvesinthemiddleofaninfinitenowhere.
Neitherstarvationnoragewilltakethem,sotheymustwaitforaneternityunlesstheyhavesomemeansofcalling
foraid(orkillingthemselves).Travellersusingastralprojectionhaveanotherproblemtodealwiththesilvercord
thatlinkstheprojectedformtothetravellersrealbody.Ifthecordiscut,thecharacterisslain.

Features&Properties
ThedominantfeatureoftheAstralPlaneisitssheeremptiness.Atravellercanfallforweeksandseenothingbut
theendlessshiftingfractalpatternsoftheplane.TheonlycreaturescommonlyencounteredareAstralParasites,
minorverminattractedtoconsciousminds.

NaturalPortals
Portalstorandomplanesmanifestinthewakeofastralstorms,starcs,andpsychicorarcanenovas.These
portalsrespondtoconsciousthoughtbyconcentrating,acharacterwithinrangeofaportal(rangeequalsthe
charactersCharismascorex10feet)cancausetheportaltobecometranslucentandallowastralcharactersto
seetheotherplane,ormaketheportalopenorclose.Iftwocharacterstrytocontrolaportalatthesametime,
useanopposedConstitutionchecktodeterminewhowins.Ifaportalisopen,anastralcharactercanstep
throughontothedestinationplane.TheportalisnormallyonewayacharactercanonlygofromtheAstraltothe
otherplane.However,for1d4roundsafteracharacterhassteppedfromtheportal,theportalcanbeusedto
reachtheAstralPlane.Theportalisinvisiblefromthefarside.UsetheRandomPlaneTabletodeterminewherea
portalleads.

Erratics
ErraticsarethefreefloatingchunksofmatterthatdottheAstralPlane.Mostarelumpsofstonewhichhavebeen
shearedawayfromthePlaneofEarthoradecayingdemiplane,buttherearepocketsofemptyair,globesof
waterorspheresofeternalflamedriftingthroughtheAstralPlane.Mostsoliderraticsareinhabitedbythevarious
denizensoftheGreatRealm,whilewateryorfieryerraticsaretappedtorefuelandresupplyastralbargesgoing
onvoyagestoplaneswithanormalTimetrait.

Waystations
Waystationsareinhabitederraticsthathavebeenclaimedbyoneoftheastralcivilisationsorguilds,suchasthe
Wayfarers.Asmallwaystationlookslikeaborderfortclingingtoafloatingrock,withseveralstrangeastralbarges
dockedatarchedmetallicspinesthatsproutfromthefort.Largerwaystationscanhavethousandsofinhabitants.
Themainfeatureofawaystationisitsaethervane,acomplexassemblageofcrystals,brassrods,cogsand
gauges.AethervanesaresensitivetothedistortionscausedbytheopeningandclosingofportalsontheAstral
Plane.Askilledaethervaneoperatorcandetectaportalopeningmillionsofmilesaway.Thewaystationssend
theirastralbargestotheseportalstopickuptravellers.

personaleffectsattachedtothefloorofaroom,andhistoolsandworkareaontheceilingwhenhegoesto
work,hesimplyreverseshispersonalgravityandmakestheworkareaintothefloor.Waystationscanbe
surprisinglywellequippedfortheirsize.

AstralBarges
ThesheersizeoftheAstralmakesmundanemodesoftransportuseless.Magicis,therefore,theonlyeffective
option.ThefamedvesselsthattraversetheGreatRealmareknownasastralbarges,althoughtheyareoften
muchtoolargeandornatetobeproperlycalledahumblebarge.Thebargesworkbyskimmingalongthesurface
oftheAstralPlane,usingthesameprinciplesasthedimensiondoorspell.Thebargesarepoweredbythewillof
thecrew,somostbehavelikeoaredvessels,therowersusetheirWisdominsteadofStrengthtorow.
Thespeedattainablebyastralbargesisextraordinarythevesselsflitinandoutofthedimensionsandattain
velocitiesgreaterthaneventheswiftestairelemental(uptofivethousandmilesperday).However,themagical
fieldthatpropelsthebargeisveryfragileifonebargecomeswithintwodozenmilesofanother,bothareslowed

tothespeedofamundanevessel.Therefore,shippingroutesontheAstralPlanearecarefullyplannedand
interceptionsandpiracyarecommon.
Someastralbargesareconvertedfromseagoingvessels,whileotherswerebuiltontheAstralPlane,andlooklike
nothingthateversailedafterall,theyneednostreamlinedhullnorsails.Acargoship,forexample,mightbe
nothingbutfourwoodencanoescontainingthepsychicrowers,withahugenetstrungbetweenthem.
Theheartofanastralbargeistheastralkeel,themagicaldevicethatpropelsthebarge.Mostkeelsaredrivenby
thewilloftherowers,exceptformagekeels(whichdrainspellslotseachspellslotgivesasmuchpushasone
rower)andbindingkeels(whichrelyonmagicallyboundcreaturesofhighWisdomsuchasgynosphinxes).

Vaults
TheGreatRealmislitteredwiththedetritusofancientplanarempiresitisthecrossroadsofcreation,so
thousandsofbattleshavebeenfoughtinitschangelessskies.Occasionally,atravellerhappensacrossthecorpse
ofsomewarriorslaininabattlelongagothebodyisaswholeandfreshasitwaswhenthedeathblowwas
struck,forthereisnotimeontheAstralPlane.Mostoftheserelicshavelongsinceeitherbeenpickedcleanof
treasureandmagic,orhavedriftedoffintothemoreremoteregionsoftheplaneandbeenforgotten.
Vaultsareadifferentandfarmoredangerousmatter.Alonglostcivilisationhadthecustomofentombingits
vanquishedfoesinmagicallysealedvaultsinsteadofmerelykillingthem.Thesevaultsblockedescapefrom
within.ThetrappedcreatureswouldfloatthroughtheAstralPlaneformillenniauntiltheytooktheirownlivesa
fittingpunishmentfortheenemiesofthegreatestempireinallcreation(sadly,nolivingsagehaseverlearnedthe
nameofthisancientcivilisation).
Allvaultsareidenticalcubesofblackmarblefloatingthroughtheastralgulf,withasinglesealeddooroneach
sideleadinginwards.Whenexaminedwithdetectmagic,thevaultradiatesancientmoderateconjurationand
abjurationmagic.Thevaultcannotbeenteredusinganysortofdimensionaltravel,astheinsideofthevaultis
lockedwithadimensionalanchoreffect.However,thedoorofavaultcanbeopenedbyathief(OpenLock,DC11
+1d10)andthecontentslootedassumingthevaultsprisonerisnotstillalive.Todetermineifthevictimisstill
alive,havethedenizensofthevaultmakeConstitutionsaves(DC10+1d10)ifthesavesucceeds,thedenizens
haveenduredthecenturies.

moretimesfasterthannormal.Thereisa20%chancethatacurrentbringsthecharactertowardsausefulportal,
a20%chanceitisdragginghimawayfromaportalrichregionanda60%chancethatthecurrentissimply
meanderingthroughtheplane.Monstersoftenhuntalongsuchcurrents,andastralbargesusesuitablecurrents
tospeedtheirpassage.TheaverageEncounterLevelisincreasedbytwoalonganastralcurrent.

AstralStorms(CR7)
Anastralstormisaheraldedbyasuddenstrangewindstrangebecausethereisnormallynostrongwindonthe
Astral.1d6roundslater,1d100milesoftheGreatRealmeruptsintoaseethingchaos.AnAstralStormhasboth
mentalandphysicaleffectsontravellerscharacterscaughtinastormmustmakeaConstitutionsaveanda
Wisdomsave,bothatDC12+1d3.
IfacharacterfailstheConstitutionsave,heisblownoffcoursefor1d4+1days.Astrallyprojectingcharactersmust
makeanadditionalConstitutionsaveatthesameDCordieastheirsilvercordsnaps.

Starcs(CR12)
Oppositesattract.
WhenoneoftheoppositesistheinfinitefuryofthePositiveEnergyPlane,andtheotheristheequallyinfiniteand
hatefulvoidoftheNegativeEnergyPlane,thisattractioncanbelethal.Astarcoccurswhenanastralcurrent
carriesPositiveEnergyclosetotheNegativePlane,orviceversa.Huge,thousandmilewide,tendrilsofenergy
lashoutfromoneplane,seekinghungrilyfortheother.Thesetendrilsareeasyenoughtoavoid,astheymove
quiteslowlyuntiltheyclosetowithinamileofeachother.Then,theformationofthestarcisimminent.
Foranunfortunatetravellercaughtinthemiddle,betweenthetwotentacles,astarclookslikeahostof
whirlwinds,occupyinganarea5+1d10milesinradius.HalfofthewhirlwindsreachupfromtheNegativeEnergy
PlaneandaredarkandeerietheotherhalfextenddownfromthePositiveEnergyRealmandburnwithaterrible
light.Astarclastsfor20+2d20roundsbeforegrounding.Eachround,rollontheStarcImpacttableforeach
traveller.
AcharactercanattempttofallintoPositivetendrilsthisisamoveaction,andmeansthataresultofnoneon
theStarcImpacttablebecomesaresultofPositiveTendril.
Whenastarcgroundsitself,themaintendrilsofPositiveandNegativeenergyfindeachotherandcanceleach

ThetollboothisactuallyaColossalironconstruct,coveredwithbloodstainedbladesandviciousspikes.Erthizis
a32HDglabrezuexiledfromtheInfernumforunknownreasons.Histollboothincorporatesamagicalaethervane
thatcandetectportalsandgatesopeningovervastdistances,andcanevendiscernthecurrentconditionofthe
characteractivatingtheportal.IfErthizdetectsaninjuredorweakcharacteropeningaportaltotheAstralPlane,
heteleportsthetollboothsothattheexittotheportalleadsintothetollboothsmouth.
Fromtheunfortunatetravellersperspective,theportaldoesnotopenontotheAstralPlaneinstead,itleadstoa
steelchamber,withasingledoorandalargealtarinthecentre.Theglabrezudemandsthattravellerspayatoll
(usually5,000gpingoldormagicitems).Ifasuitabletollisplacedonthealtar,thetollboothvanishes.Otherwise,
thedooropens,leadingtoagauntletofprogressivelymoredangeroustrapsandmonsters.Ateachstage,Erthiz
offersthetravelleranotherchancetopaythetoll,whichincreasesby5,000gpaftereachdoormosttravellers
refuseatfirst,butpayupasthedangersintensify.
