U.S. KILLS
BIN LADEN

Special

His trail of terror

FROM WIRE REPORTS

WASHINGTON Osama bin

Laden, the glowering mastermind
behind the Sept. 11, 2001, terror
attacks that killed thousands of
Americans, was killed in an operation led by the United States, President Obama said Sunday.
A small team of U.S. operatives
killed bin Laden yesterday in Abbottabad, Pakistan, in a firefight, took
custody of his body and confirmed
his identity, Obama said. The president said a possible lead to Osamas
whereabouts emerged in August but
took many months to run down.
A jubilant crowd gathered outside
the White House as word spread of
bin Ladens death after a global
manhunt that lasted nearly a
decade, chanting, USA, USA,
while waving American flags and
singing the national anthem.
Justice has been done, the president said.
Former President George W.
Bush, who was in office on the day
of the attacks, issued a written statement hailing bin Ladens death as a
momentous achievement. The
fight against terror goes on, but
tonight America has sent an unmistakable message: No matter how
long it takes, justice will be done,
he said.
Few details were immediately
available of the operation that
resulted in bin Ladens death,
although the president said none of
the Americans involved was harmed.
The United States believes that
three adults in addition to Osama
bin Laden were killed in Sundays
raid in Pakistan and that one of the
dead was an adult son of bin Laden,
a senior Obama administration official said.
The United States is not and
never will be at war with Islam,
Obama said. Bin Laden was not a
Muslim leader. He was a mass murderer of Muslims. His demise
should be welcomed by all who
