Comparatives and Superlatives

Adjectives are used to


describe nouns. When
comparing things, we
use comparative and
superlative adjectives.
For comparatives, we
usually add er and for
superlatives, we
usually add est.
Adjective form
Only one syllable,
ending in E. Examples:
wide, fine, cute

Comparative
Add -r: wider, finer,
cuter

Superlative
Add -st: widest, finest,
cutest

Only one syllable, with


one vowel and one
consonant at the end.
Examples: hot, big, fat

Double the consonant,


and add -er: hotter,
bigger, fatter

Double the consonant,


and add -est: hottest,
biggest, fattest

Only one syllable, with


more than one vowel
or more than one
consonant at the end.
Examples: light, neat,
fast

Add -er: lighter,

Comparatives of Equality:
as ... as - tan ... como
not so ... as - no tan ... como
not as ... as - no tan ... como
(not) as much ... as - (no) tanto ... como
(not) as many ... as - (no) tantos ... como
the same ... as - la misma ... que

Bill is as tall as Peter.


Bill es tan alto como Peter.
Jane is not so beautiful as Mary.
Jane no es tan hermosa como Mary.
This is not as easy as you think.
