Redefining Recruitment: The Uber
Way

Talent woes hurting Indian

Hospitality and Retail Industry

By: Atonu Bhattacharya

By: Atonu Bhattacharya

When it comes to using innovation in their

recruitment strategy, Uber is leading the way
with UberFAUJI, the India rendition of its
UberMILITARY in the US, and UberDOST, its
India-first referral app.

The Indian Retail market is valued at $500 billion

and is expected to grow at 13% to $950 billion
by 2018. The Hospitality industry has emerged
as one of the key drivers of growth in the Indian
Services Sector. Despite being 2 pillars of the
Services Sector, both Industries have struggled
with high attrition, talent acquisition issues and
high payroll costs.
Service Industry Voluntary Attrition (%)

UberFAUJI:
UberFAUJI provides self-employment to exservicemen looking for flexible part-time work
while they look for another job, as well as fulltime opportunities after they end their military
career.
Upon enrolment, the servicemen can either
drive themselves or hire others to drive for
them. Those without a commercial car are also
offered special schemes of easy loans for the
car. Flexibility Plus allows flexibility in terms of
online timings to achieve a perfect work-life
balance.
UberDOST:
Faced with a shortage of drivers for its scaling
ambitions, Uber started a program about 11
months ago to monetarily reward those who
referred good drivers. Often these Dosts have
innovative ideas as to how and where they can
find able drivers and make successful pitches to
them to enroll with Uber.
Ubers Recruitment Strategy:
Strategize your hiring practices.
Establish principles to ensure continuity.
Keep your eyes on the future.
Redefine employee perks.

Entry and Junior Management Attrition stands

at more than 35% for both industries combined.
With prevalence of fungible talent, the sources
of talent loss are mostly common for Hospitality
and Retail Industries i.e. IT/ITeS, BFSI and
Telecom Sectors. The key reasons for voluntary
attrition include Inadequate Rewards and
Recognition, External Inequity, Higher
Education, Role Stagnation and Work-life
balance.
While the Payroll Costs as a percentage of
Revenue stands at ~20% for the overall market,
Retail and Hospitality are way above at ~30%.
Ineffective Hiring Practices, Skilled Talent Crisis
and High Regulatory Compliance are some
other critical challenges for Retail and
Hospitality. It is high time that Hospitality and
Retail realign their talent think-tank to adapt to
the rapid growth waiting ahead.
