CH-101: INDUSTRIAL CHEMISTRY

Objective: Industrial Chemistry is an integrated science that ties together with fundamental concepts of
physics, biology, engineering, medicine and environmental science and plays an important role in all
engineering fields. The basic knowledge of water treatment, corrosion, eutectics, alloys, industrially important
materials, specially polymers and tools of nanochemistry would help students in solving problems of
engineering applications.

PART-A

Unit 1: Water Treatment Chemistry


Natural sources of water, impurities in water, water quality standards, hardness, types and its determination
by EDTA method, alkalinity and its determination, numerical problems based on hardness & alkalinity, total
dissolved solids (TDS), domestic water treatment, water softening methods: zeolite, ion-exchange, and mixed
bed ion exchange process, desalination of water, reverse osmosis (RO) & electro-dialysis process.

Unit 2: Corrosion and its Control


Causes of corrosion, dry and wet corrosion, electrochemical theory of corrosion, galvanic corrosion, pitting
corrosion, differential aeration corrosion, stress corrosion, soil corrosion, microbial corrosion, factors affecting
corrosion, preventive measures of corrosion, material selection and design.

Unit 3: Phase Rule and its Application


Terminology of Gibb's phase rule and problems based on phase rule equation, one component system (water),
two component systems (Pb-Ag, Zn-Mg and Na-K) and their applications in engineering, defence, food and
pharmaceutical industries.

PART-B

Unit 4: Chemistry of Industrially Important Materials


Composites: Constituents and classification of composites, types of fibres used as reinforcing materials,
advantages over conventional materials and applications in automobile, marine, aviation, electronic and
computer industries.

Lubricants: importance and types of lubricants, theories of lubrication, important properties (viscosity,
viscosity index, saponification number, cloud point & pour point, flash point & fire point, aniline point).

Unit 5: Specialty Polymers and their Industrial Application


Introduction, properties and applications of specialty polymers: fire retardant polymers, electrically conducting
polymers, photo-conducting polymers, electroluminescent polymers, liquid crystal polymers, biodegradable
polymers.

Unit 6: Nano-chemistry
Introduction to nano-science and its applications, a brief about conventional techniques, chemical techniques
like sol-gel and electro-deposition used to prepare highly porous materials, principles and applications of SEM,
AFM techniques to understand the structure and chemistry of nanomaterials (no experimental details
required)

PH-101: APPLIED PHYSICS-I

Objective: To provide the knowledge of fundamental principles and concepts of Physics which are relevant to
an engineer. A joint effort of Physicists and engineers gives the technological development to the modern
world. So, proper study of Physics would certainly enhance the capabilities of students as an engineer.

PART-A

Unit 1: Quantum Physics


Concepts of quantum physics, Plancks radiation law, Compton effect, matter waves group and phase
velocity, Schrodingers equations (time dependent and independent), quantum statistics: Bose Einstein and
Fermi Dirac statistics.

Unit 2: Barriers and Wells


Particle in a box (motion in one dimension), single step barrier, rectangular potential barrier, tunnel effect and
its applications.

Unit 3: Lasers and Optical Fibres


Einsteins coefficients, principle of lasers, population inversion, laser pumping, characteristics of lasers, types
of lasers: He Ne laser and semiconductor laser, application of lasers.Introduction to optical fibres, acceptance
angle and numerical aperture, types of optical fibres, applications of fibres.

PART-B

Unit 4: Electrostatics
Electric field intensity and electric potential due to continuous charge distribution, divergence and curl of
electrostatic field, Poissions equation, Laplaces equation, cartesian solution of Laplace equation in one
dimension, work done in moving a charge, energy of a point charge distribution and continuous charge
distribution.

Unit 5: Interaction of Radiation with Matter


Interaction of particles and radiations with matter, absorption of gamma rays through matter: photoelectric
absorption, Compton scattering and pair production. Nuclear radiation detectors: gas filled detectors,
ionisation chamber, proportional counter, GM counter, scintillation counter and solid state detectors.

Unit 6: Introduction to Astrophysics


Doppler shift, gravitational shift, stars, white dwarf, black dwarf, neutron star, black hole, dark matter, anti
matter. Big bang, expanding universe and critical density, future of universe, big crunch.

MA-101: APPLIED MATHS-I

Objective: The subject of Engineering Mathematics is being introduced into the Degree course to provide
mathematical background to the students so that they can be able to grasp the engineering subjects, which
they will come across in their higher classes properly. The course will give them the insight to understand and
analyze the engineering problems scientifically based on Mathematics.

PART-A

Unit 1: Convergence and Divergence of infinite series


Introduction to sequences, infinite series, tests for convergence/divergence: p-series test, comparison test,
ratio test, root test, Raabe's test, lograthmetic test, integral test, Cauchys condensation test. Alternating
series: Absolute convergence and conditional convergence.

Unit 2: Successive Differentiation


Leibnitzs theorem (without proof), Taylors and Maclaurins series, expansion of functions of one variable.

Unit 3: Functions of two or more variables


Limit and continuity, Differentiation of function of several variables, partial derivatives, derivatives of
composite and implicit function , Eulers theorem on homogenous functions, Total derivative, Change of
variables, Jacobians and their properties, Taylors and Mclaurins series for functions of two variables, Maxima
and minima of functions of two variables, Lagranges method of undetermined multipliers.

PART-B

Unit 4: Applications of Integrals


Application of single integral: arc length, plane area, area of surface of revolution and volume of solid of
revolution.
Double Integrals, change the order of integration, area enclosed by plane curves, triple integrals, volume of
solids, change of variables, Beta and Gamma function, their properties and simple applications.

Unit 5: Vector Calculus


Scalar and vector point functions, differentiations of vectors, gradient, divergence and curl, their physical
meanings and properties. line, surface and volume integrals, Greens theorem, Gauss's divergence theorem,
Stoke's theorem (Statement only).

Unit 6: Ordinary Differential Equations


Introduction, exact differential equations, equation reducible to exact differential equations, ordinary linear
differential equations with constant co- efficient, complete solutions of linear differential equations with
constant co- efficient, method of variation of parameters, simultaneous linear differential equations.

HM-101: COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Objective: This course is designed to impart training in the use of English language for communicative purpose.
It aims to develop reading, writing, listening, and spoken language skills of the student. The Language Lab
component seeks to provide training in soft skills.

PART-A
Unit 1: Semantics & Syntax
Synonyms, antonyms, homophones, homonyms, word formations. Commonly used idioms, phrasal verbs.
Remedial grammar: auxiliaries, modals, tenses, voice, clauses, synthesis and reported speech.

Unit 2: Writing Skills:


Paragraph writing of about 150 words on general /current topics, Developing proverbs into a paragraph
Expressing opinions (argumentative and analytical topics), Request applications (for leave, fees, transport
facility, attendance , participation , Loss of I card, apology etc), Formal letters, Business letter writing; resume
and covering letter; report writing.

Unit 3: Reading Skills


Reading for information, reading news- features, magazine articles and editorials. Anthology: English for
Students of Science by A Roy and P L Sharma; Orient Longman. (Prescribed Chapters: a) The Year2050 by
Theodore J Gordon b) Human Environment by Indira Gandhi.

PART-B

Unit 4: Listening: Improving listening quotient through


Comprehension of rapid talks, passages read aloud, lectures and short speeches
Conversations based on familiar situation
Taking notes and listening comprehension from CD/Video

Unit 5: Phonetics:
Basic concepts-vowels& consonants, phonemes, syllables and articulation of speech sounds. Developing
understanding about stress, intonation and pronunciation along with accent correction exercises.

Unit 6: Speaking Skills: (Practical)


With an emphasis on building confidence and improving body language while practicing
Greeting, introduction and formulae of everyday conversation
Polite requests, questions, short questions, short answers and question tags
Conversations in familiar situations asking for information, asking for permission, advice and
suggestions
Telephone conversations and etiquettes
Short talks on general topics

Objective: To give basic introduction to Computers and developing programming skills in C language.

PART-A

Unit 1: Overview of a Computer System


Components of a computer system, Central Processing Unit and its functions, memory unit and its function,
RAM, ROM and PROM, secondary memory unit. Input/Output devices and their functions.
Number systems and binary codes: Decimal, binary, octal, hexadecimal number systems and their conversions;
Arithmetic operations in these number systems. Binary codes for characters and numbers, ASCII codes and
EBCDIC codes.
Operating systems: Overview of operating system and its functions; DOS, Windows, Unix, and Linux

Unit 2: Programming Fundamentals


Programming languages, machine, assembly and higher level computer languages, development of algorithms
to solve problems, algorithms for some simple problems; flow charts and their symbols, drawing of flow charts
for some simple problems.

Unit 3: Elements of C Language


C fundamentals, in-built data types, various types of variables, operators and expressions; conditional
statements and I/O statements, loops, nested loops and their applications; basic Data Structures in C: one-,
two-dimensional arrays.

PART-B

Unit 4: Programming Using C


User defined functions and their various forms; function prototypes, nesting of functions, recursive functions,
local and global variables; simple problems using functions. Structures and union; structure variables and
operations on structures; nested array structures, unions and enumerations. Problems using Functions, arrays,
union and structures.

Unit 5: Pointers and String Handling in C


Pointers, declaration of pointers, accessing variables through pointers. Character arrays and strings, string
variables, I/O of strings, array of strings; String Handling operations; tables of strings, Simple string
manipulation problems. Structures and functions through pointers; simples problems using pointers.

Unit 6: File Management in C


Defining of files, opening & closing of files, Input/output streams, creation of files, file operations, formatted
input / output of data, error handling during file operations. Pre-processor directives, Standard Library
functions. Header Files, user-defined header files.

generation.
DC Networks: Kirchoffs laws node-voltage and mesh current methods, Superposition theorems. Thevenins
and Nortons theorem. Maximum power transfer theorem star and delta transformation -Illustrative examples
Unit 2: AC Circuits
Introduction to electromagnetism, single phase-AC generation waveform, average value, rms value, form
factor peak factor, R-L, R-C, RLC series circuits, series and parallel resonance, Q factor, power factor, Active &
Reactive power, Illustrative examples. Three phase e mf generation, delta & star connections line and phase
quantities.
Unit 3: Measuring Instruments
Basic working of a measuring instrument, Construction of Moving coil instruments, Moving iron ammeter and
voltmeters, Electrodynamometer type Wattmeter, Induction type energy meter.

PART-B
Unit 4: Transformer
Construction, emf equation phasor diagram on no load and loaded condition, losses on transformer, Open
circuit and short circuit test to measures the losses, efficiency and voltage regulation, Autotransformer.
Unit 5: DC Machines
DC generator construction, emf equation, types of excitation, dc motor principle of operation, back-emf,
Speed control, applications.
Unit 6: AC Machines
Induction motor construction and Principle of operation applications, Synchronous generator- Construction
and Principle of operation. Synchronous motors applications.

Objective: To familiarize the students with the working principle and characteristics of diodes, transistors,
amplifiers, oscillator, op-amps, digital electronics, micro process / micro controller.

Unit 1: Semiconductors
p n junction diode characteristics, working principle of various types of diode (Zener diode, LED, Varactor,
Schotkky and photodiode)

Unit 2: Rectifiers and Filters


Half wave and full wave rectifiers, filter circuits, clipping and clamping circuits, voltage multipliers.

Unit 3: Transistor Amplifiers and Oscillators


Introduction to Bipolor junction transistor, types of configuration (CB, CE and CC), transistor as an amplifier.
Introduction to oscillator.

PART-B

Unit 4: Operational Amplifiers


Working principle, block diagram & characteristics of op-amp, inverting and non inverting op- amp, linear
applications of op-amp- scale changer, phase shifter, adder, voltage to current converter, current to voltage
converter, voltage follower, integrator, differentiator.

Unit 5: Digital Electronics


Number systems, conversion of bases (Binary, Decimal, Hexa, Octal), Boolean algebra, logic gates, concept of
universal gate, minimization using K-map, flip-flops, registers ,counters.

Unit 6: Micro processors / Micro controllers


A/D and D/A converters, Display devices LED, LCD. Introduction to microprocessor and micro controller.

List of Experiments:

Applied Physics

1. To find the grating element of a given grating using a laser.


2. To draw the characteristics of a solar cell and to find the fill factor.
3. To study the V-I characteristics of a pn junction diode and find its static and dynamic resistance.
4. To find the band gap of an intrinsic semiconductor using four probe method.
5. To study Hall effect in a semiconductor and to find (i) Hall voltage and Hall coefficient (ii) number of
charge carriers per unit volume (iii) mobility.
6. To calculate the dielectric constant of a solid.
7. To determine M and H by magnetometers.
8. To determine the numerical aperture of an optical fibre from far field measurements.

Applied Chemistry

9. Determination of Total dissolved solids (TDS) value in ground water samples using TDS meter.
10. To electroplate the given strip of Cu with Ni using electroplating or electro-deposition technique.
11. To determine the flash point & fire point of given lubricating oil using Pensky Marten's apparatus.
12. To determine the viscosity of given lubricating oil using Redwood viscometer.
13. Determination of emf using Potentiometric titration.
14. Determination of Eutectic point of two component system by cooling curve method.
15. To study the extent of corrosion of different metals in different media.

Note: Every student needs to do minimum 10 experiments (5 each from Applied Physics and Applied
Chemistry) in a semester.

2. Verification of Superposition Theorem and Maximum Power Transfer theorem.
3. Verification of Thevenins Theorem and Nortons theorem.
4. Measurement of power and power factor in R-L-C series and parallel circuits.
5. Three phase power measurement of balanced loads.
6. Identification of various types of diodes.
7. Study of V-I characteristics of pn diode.
8. To study diode as a rectifier (half wave, full wave).
9. To study static characteristics of transistor in CE configuration.
10. Realization of various op-amp circuits (Adder, Subtractor, and Inverter).
11. Realization of basic digital gates (AND, OR, NOT, NAND, NOR).

Note: Every student needs to do minimum 10 numbers of experiments in a semester.

To convert user supplied measurements in inches into (a) foot, yard; (b) cm & m
To calculate taxes based on income of a person.
To convert score to grade (use switch statement)
2. WAP using conditional statements (if-then, nested if-then and switch statements)
3. WAP using looping and nested looping ( for-loop, do-while, while statements)
4. WAP to Add, subtract and multiply two matrices and print the resultant matrix in rectangular form in
formatted form.
5. Write Programs using structure and union
6. Write Programs using functions and user-defined functions
7. Write Program for File handling problems: create, update and print file in different forms
8. WAP to print calendar of a month (use loops)
9. WAP using recursion to (i) implement Fibonacci series (ii) Factorial of N.
10. WAP to search an element in an array.
11. Write a program for displaying the output using print function in a following format
