CONTEXTUAL FACTORS

MDD Standard
The teacher candidate collects data regarding the institutional and classroom
contexts, the characteristics of the pupils as a group and its diversity, using this
information to plan and deliver instruction.

1. Community in which the school is located and/or serves, municipality or

owner and school factors: Below, describe the geographic location,
community and school population, socioeconomic profile, and race/ethnicity.
The UCSC is a Chilean University located in Concepcin, specifically in Lomas de
San Andrs neighbourhood. This University, which is directed by Monseor
Fernando Chomali, belongs to the consejo de rectores and the Catholic Church.
In 2016, 90 students have entered the English Teaching program with a PSU
average of 540 points and an average of 5,6 in English at school.
80% of the first year students are from Concepcin and 20% come from a
different zone. They are all Chilean.
The majority of the learners belonging to the first year of the English teaching
program are from the middle class, meaning that they have economical stability.
This learners are divided into four groups. In Section one, there are 13 students
in total, 10 women and 3 men.

1.1. How These Factors May Impact My Lessons: Explain specific

ways that these factors may impact your lesson topics, teaching
strategies, assessment techniques, etc.
First, the city where the University is located has a huge impact in
students everyday routine, so we consider that is important to
integrate the real context of the learners with every topic that is
taught.
We do not consider an important factor that the University belongs to
the Catholic Church, but it may have an impact in our lessons in a way
that some students that choose this institution expect to be taught
according to the catholic moral values. The fact that the UCSC belongs
to the consejo de rectores claims for the quality of the education of
this university and makes the beginner learners feel confident that
they will apply for a job in the future.
The points obtained in PSU are not a factor that will impact the lessons
because this standardized test do not measure the English knowledge
of the learners; in fact, this test is only based on the logicalmathematical intelligence.
An important point to take in consideration is the average of English
that this generation obtained in high school, because this information
gives you an idea of the level of proficiency of the first year learners.
The average mark should be taken by the teachers as a starting point.
The context of students that come from different zones needs to be
taken in consideration. We as teachers should create situations where
they can share important aspects of their homes, to make them feel
comfortable and to introduce new information the classmates that are
from the region.
We think that is important to have authentic materials, based on the
chilean context, including the ethnic groups and the chilean heritage.
The majority of the students have economic stability. This is a benefit
considering that some of the activities will require to buy materials to
be developed.

2. Student Characteristics and Their Instructional Implications: Below,

describe how two student characteristics you observed in your student (e.g.,
gender, race/ethnicity, interests, student skill levels) might impact the way you
instruct those students. For example, your planning, motivation, management,

or assessment. For each example of the student characteristic, give a specific

instructional implication that will influence how you plan and implement your
instruction.

2.1 Description of First Characteristic of Student(s) in this Class:

In this class there are 13 students in total. The average of attendance is 8
students. According to the data that was collected during the lessons that we
observed, we noticed that two learners (girls) are above the level of proficiency
required in first year. The majority of the students of section one are in the
required level, fulfilling the tasks given by the teacher without much problems.
We also noticed that there is a learner (girl) that is below the level of proficiency
of her classmates, having difficulties to comprehend instructions and to achieve
basic assignments.

2.1.1 How This Characteristic Will Impact my Lesson:

Student skills levels have an important impact in the classroom. Regarding
motivation levels, the students that are above the level are not motivated
because they already know what is being taught. The students that are below
the level, generally, are not motivated to participate in the lesson because they
are afraid of making mistakes or they do not understand what is being asked.
The students that are in the level, are motivated to learn and they regularly
participate voluntarily. Motivation affects participation and concentration. So, as
teachers we will have to work on motivating the students.
Generally, the students that are below the level have a small degree of
concentration, they pay attention during the teachers explanations, but as we
could observe, when they are asked to work, if they do not understand the
instructions, they lose concentration and they do not finish the activity.
The students that are above the level have a good degree of concentration
during the explanations of content, but when they are asked to do an activity, as
they know the content, they fulfill the activity before the other students, and
they are free, loosing the concentration. The students that are in the level have
a good level of concentration. As teachers we will have to try to keep every
student concentrated, getting to know every student rithm of learning and
innovating in the way of teaching.
Students level of proficiency also affects planning. When you have different
levels among your classroom, you have to plan in a more personalized way. We
as teachers will have to take in account the reality of the students, planning in a
way that every learner can understand the content and then properly apply it .

2.2 Description of Second Characteristic of Students in this Class:

In the class there are 13 learners in total, 10 females and 3 males. During
our observation journal, on the one hand, we could observe that most of
the students that attend to classes are women, who participate regularly
during the lesson, working together in silence most of the time. On the
other hand, only one man appeared once in the classroom, who did not
participate the whole lesson and never attend again.

2.2.1 How This Characteristic Will Impact my Lesson:

The amount of females in the class will have a positive impact in our
lesson, because those women are encouraged to participate in the
activities that the guide teacher presents. However, we would like to
meet the men that are part of the course, because they are also
important in our future lessons/tutorials and we would be excited to
help them to overcome any difficulty in the acquisition of english
language that they might have.

3. Physical Aspects of the Classroom and Their Instructional Implications:

Below, describe how two physical aspects of the classroom you observed (e.g.,
posters, room arrangement, technology) might impact the way you instruct
students, for example, planning, motivation, management, or assessment. For
each example, give a specific instructional implication that will influence how you
plan and implement your instruction.

3.1 Description of First Physical Aspect:

The classroom is big and comfortable, so it makes possible to arrange the seats
in a semi circle. There is a huge window where sun shines all the day;
furthermore, the classroom has an air conditioner system that reduces the heat
in the summer and the humidity during the winter.

3.1.1 How This Aspect Will Impact My Lesson:

Having a spacious classroom is a great benefit for the teacher and the students.
Firstly, when you have a small number of learners in your classes and a
comfortable room, you are able to change the sitting arrangement according to
the kind of activity that you want to develop.
Secondly, we can innovate with new teaching techniques using kinesthetic
methods. Activities that imply moving around the classroom, interactive games,
working in groups, working in pairs, mimics, and other teaching techniques are
beneficial for those students that learn through movement, and having an ample
teaching place make it possible.
Finally, the classroom conditions create a good teaching atmosphere. When you
are in a classroom that has the light and the heat that is needed, students feel
comfortable and are more willing to participate during the learning process.

3.2 Description of Second Physical Aspect:

The classroom has the sufficient materials for developing the class. There is a
computer, a data, a good sound system and a big white board.

3.2.1How This Aspect Will Impact My Lesson:

Having visual media materials in the lesson are a great benefit for both learners
and the teacher, because they help students to discover new ways of learning
english, through activities that allow them to enjoy the learning process and
improve in their four skills. Moreover, those resources are useful for teachers
during teaching process, helping them to create new tasks that motivate the
students to acquire the foreign language, and allowing them to perform more
successfully in the classroom.

3. Reflects on the importance of knowing about students and the context to

provide quality teaching
It is essentially important to know about the characteristics of the students that
will be taught by us, because it allows us to know how to elaborate the lesson
according to their needs and their personalities. Furthermore, teachers must be
prepared to deal with the diversity in the classroom and any difficulty or problem
that the learners may have during the learning process.

We, as future educators, consider utterly important to plan our lessons according
to the context, getting to know the reality of the classroom in order to be
understood by every student and understand them to create a peaceful
environment.
