Assignment #3
Experiential Learning Interview: Sarah Oslund
From the interview with Sarah, during which I asked her questions about her hobbies,
interests, and passion, I found out her essential qualities that would help me determine the right
experiential learning opportunities for her.
Sarah is a sophomore majoring in Computer Science and Math. Naturally, she is
interested in underrepresentation of certain groups in STEM fields, including women. When she
is not studying for her courses, she runs, reads, and hang out with friends. She especially likes
reading Harry Potter and Brandon Sanderson books.
Based on these descriptions, I thought of three experiential learning opportunities that
would suit her. First of all, I found out that there is an RSO called Association for Women in
Mathematics Student Chapter at UW. The RSO has several objectives that I am sure Sarah would
be interested in as well, such as raising awareness of the contributions of women in the
mathematical sciences and mentoring women and girls to prepare for careers in the mathematical
sciences. Second of all, I also found an opportunity that is relevant to her hobby outside her
studiesUW Harry Potter club. The club usually holds stress-free activities that are based on the
plots of Harry Potter series, such as scavenger hunt, riddles, and fun activities using the Sorting
Hat. It would be a good destressing opportunity to hang out with people who has the same hobby
as hers. And the last but not least, she could work with an engineering RSO called DubsTech.
The RSO aims to develop and accentuate coding skills in UDub students by providing
workshops for HTML, CSS, Android Development, JavaScript, C++ and Python, as well as basic
computer training workshops for the technologically challenged. Not only will it enhance the
coding and programming skills that she already has from being in the CS major, but also will
help her contribute to the society, helping those who are technically challenged in the campus
and perhaps beyond.
