About the Roadtrip to Success" title

We all know that before we can truly become a licensed Civil Engineer, we should take the Civil Engineering
board exam. For now, the dream to become one could be really scary. But there's a saying that "Your dream is not big
enough if it doesn't scare you". One of the events that happened during the 5th year period is the CE V Plant Tour 2016. The
educational tour served as a background of on-site visit experiences that became a good tool as a stepping stone of learning.

Acknowledgements
I would like to thank my Auntie, Faith Lorenzana Ozaeta; my (fairy) Godmother Chy Reandelar from New York; my uncle Dr.
Giovanni Lorenzana, a dentist; my Auntie, Marissa Nebres Cid, an English professor; my grandmother Melanie Pecson Lambley, from

CE V TOUR REACTION PAPER DETAILS

September 1-2, 2016 CMDF-TC 2-day Seminar (Dasmarias, Cavite)

hroughout the 2-

day seminar, we realized that

being a Civil Engineer is no
joke, especially if you are
going to be a Structural
Engineer, Safety Engineer or a
Contractor. It takes a lot of
good management skills to
obtain a successful structural
project.
There's a famous

you're planning to fail"like
in Construction Planning and
Management, we need to have a
systematic way of planning: activity
sequencing, schedule development,

development and etc. The favorite
part during the whole seminar
session is on the second day when
the second mentor made an ice
breaker session for the whole CE
Fifth Year crowd. Our group has to
stand up when the word "CIVIL" has
called and the whole CE V should
stand if the words "BICOL

creative literary write-up about our
batch's stay in CMDF-TC.

CMDF-TC Seminar Day 1

Arriving at past 4 am from Bicol, we reached the Construction Manpower and Development Foundation-Training
Center at Salitran 4, Dasmarias, Cavite. After breakfast and some preparation, we proceeded to the CMDF-TC
Convention hall. For that day, we had Engr. John Juan as the first speaker. He happened to be the speaker for the wholeday round. He started his seminar introducing himself like showing his comedian-side.

Scope Definition:
-Subdividing the major project deliverables
into smaller components

Work Breakdown Schedule (WBS)

-a deliverable-oriented grouping of project
elements that organizes and defines the total scope
of the project.

Work Packages
-items at the lowest level of the WBS
Activity # 1: Work Breakdown Schedule
For the first activity the CE V students were asked
to state the work breakdown of the given vertical
WBS-making of Condominium Activity. Engr. John Juan explained infrastructure which is a building.
Before proceeding to the activity, Engr. Juan
that the building is a walk-up building design. This is the basis for the
first activity on how to make a work breakdown schedule or also known asked first the students what kind of building is that.
as the WBS
Ms. Janecca Marbella, our classmate, said that the
building is a condominium. Engr. Juan said she is
correct.
Moreover, Engr. Juan explained that the sample
of the condominium building shown is a walk-up
building design. It is a fact that every building should
have a stairway when the elevator is absent.
The students have come up into an output mostly
with the following content of the WBS for that
condominium: (1) Site works, (2) Foundation works,
(3) Concrete works, (4) Steel works, (5) Masonry
works, (6) Tile works, (7) Carpentry works, (8)
Plumbing works, (9) Electrical works, (10) Painting
works, (11) Form works, and etc.
Activity # 2: What are the components of 4Ms
applied in the Condominium WBS Structure?
Engr. John Juan first asked the students what
are the four Ms in construction. To make the
students remain engaged during the discussion, he
asked the students to guess and guess what those
four Ms are. After some of the students had guessed the right answers, Engr. John Juan revealed the right answers. The
four Ms in construction are the following: (1) Manpower; (2) Materials; (3) Machine; (4) Method. For the manpower, we
included the sanitary engineer, mason, construction worker and etc. For the materials, we included the concrete-making
materials, the PVC pipes as well as the steel bars. For the machine, we included the mixer and the tractor.

Group Presentation. Students from different groups presented their

respective WBS analysis according to their perspective.

Activity # 3: Estimating the Catchment Basin

For the intro, Engr. Juan asked the
students what is the Filipino translation of the
septic tank. When the others said that it was
Poso Negro, they were wrong. It was Spanish.
Moving on, Engr. Juan gave each group
an illustration of the catchment basin and were
going to estimate it, including the labor cost.
But there is a twist; he will not spoonfeed us with a lot of information. His rule was we
are going to ask him first by writing it in a tiny
sheet of paper, give him that tiny sheet of paper
and that will be our form of our conversation.
After he receives the message, he will decide if
he will give additional information. Now that
makes sense so he can see to it that his students
are really thinking the right thing to do.
Even the informal questions, it is a
requirement to put it on paper:

We Found The Clue. Engr. Juan has a rule of asking him by writing it in a piece of
paper. When we got the series of questions right, he gave us these tables to help
ourselves estimate the catchment basin or the septic tank

Mr. JJ
Due to liquid intake, my urinary
bladder has expanded to its maximum elastic
capacity. In connection with this, may I ask if I
can travel a ripple of distance to the restroom
to have a right amount of time to detoxify my
urinary system?
Hoping for your utmost consideration.
Yours truly,
Joy (Group Four No Graphics)

CMDF-TC Seminar Day 2

Before anything else, again, we woke up in the morning with bliss. And before we headed up to the
convention hall, we decided to have some photo ops. And earlier in the morning, the CE 5th year guys spent
their free time on billiards. Everyone was squeaky clean when they entered the convention hall for the second
time.

Course Objectives:
At the end of this orientation seminar, you are expected to;
Describe the contents of planning process
Recognize the difference between planning and scheduling
Compute for event times and activity times of each activity
Compute total and free float of each activity
The students were asked to interpret the drawing:
The engineer teacher had let us guess the
message of the figure shown. Some of the students
really focused on what was shown on the diagram
pictured on the image. The best interpretation of the
image is theres no time to slack off and just do planning.
In order to finish the project on time, you just have to
begin doing it. Because, most of the time, we only
discover what to adjust in actual work.

The students were taught to plan specific details of construction by using the arrow diagramming method.
After the last activity, the second speaker had an icebreaker for the 5th year students. It was like a story-telling
session for the speaker. Each group has been assigned a word by the speaker where in if the word was uttered by that
days speaker, the group will shout Hephep and if the Bicol University is mentioned, the whole CE Fifth year students
should say, Mabuhay! The speaker, according to my recorder, said exactly like this:
Isang araw, ang mga 5th year Civil Engineering students ng Bicol University, kasama ang kanilang mga propesor, ay
pumunta sa CMDF upang umattend ng orientation seminar ng Construction Project Management. Ang mga 5th year Civil
Engineering students ng Bicol University, kasama ang kanilang mga propesor, ay active na nakinig sa mga sumusunod na topic
ng Construction Project Management Seminar, tulad ng Scope Definition, Resource Planning and so and so on. Masayang

September 3, 2016 FREE DAY

(Manila)
After checking out from CMDF-TC Dasmarias, Cavite,
we went to the Garden Plaza Hotel. But before checking in to
the Garden Plaza hotel, we first had a breakfast in some part
of Pasay, maybe.
Right after I checked into the hotel, I hurriedly asked
permission from the professors.
I know this day is not officially relevant due to its only
a free day. But personally, I do really have new realizations in
life during those days.
It is important to be street smart in the very
controversial Manila. To be practical, you have to know how
to save money when you commute and it is impractical to do
taxi every single day when it is really a better alternative to
take the LRT.
I used my whole Saturday to keep the Sabbath day
holy so I went to Manila Chinese Adventist Church. It is also
important for me to put God first in our mind and heart so we
will always be guided according to His will.

September 4, 2016 FREE DAY (Manila)

Finally, were in the second official day of staying
in the Garden Plaza hotel.
Because I having nothing to do that day (actually I
have to go out but I purposely declined my beaus invite
to go out for a friendly Sunday hangout; one Saturday
with him is enough), or let me rephrase that, because I
decided to stay at the hotel with Ate Ara, I had time to
take photos of the hotels interiors. I had already
remembered, its the chilly weather outside the reason of
being influenced with the idea of not going out of the
hotel and have lengthy hours of sleep plus some TV
instead.
Maybe?

Effective Flood Control Operation System
New technology has come and one of it is the Effective
Flood Control Operation System in Manggahan in cooperation
with the MMDA. To prevent catastrophic turmoil in Metro
Manila, EFCOS will be the answer. The floodgates are used to
divert flood and reverse flow. The hydraulic control structure in
Napindan is used to prevent saline and polluted water. There are
also warning posts situated in different areas to alert people;
also issues a siren and a voice record.

September 6, 2016 San Roque Dam

(San Roque, Pangasinan)
The students were requested to report to the bus for
about 3 oclock. We reached Region I for about 6 oclock and
had a breakfast in a very famed Philippine fast-food which has a
very gleeful red honeybee as the mascot of it. At past 9 oclock,
we have reached the San Roque Manpower Corporation. And
we are pleased to hear no more about Sir Eggies infamous
made-up Pangasinan legend about the girl named Sarah and her
beau, Geronimo.

livelihood center showcased the works of art of
talented Pangasinenses where in the place consists of
beaded jewelries.
After that, we went to the convention hall of

handicrafts and other fields of expertise.
About the San Roque Multipurpose Project
SRMP and SRPC
The Agno River north of Luzon spans 221 kilometers in
length, running through three municipalities: San Manuel and
San Nicolas in Pangasinan and Itogon in Benguet.
The San Roque Multipurpose Project (SRMP) was built
beginning 1998 to harness the power of Agno River, bringing four major benefits to several communities in the heart of
Luzon: irrigation, flood control, electrical power, and improved water quality

The San Roque Power Corporation (SRPC)

is responsible for the operations and maintenance
of the power generating facility of SRMP for 25
years effective May 2003. SRPC is owned by the

Power Company Ltd (50%). It is a stock
corporation incorporated in the Philippines, in
accordance with the Corporation Code of the
Philippines, and the Foreign Investments Act of
1991.
One of the most modern hydroelectric
generation facilities in the world, it helps improve
the lives of thousands of Filipinos

Irrigation
The project provides year round irrigation to 21,000
hectares of farmlands in the province of Pangasinan with the
completion of the Agno River Integrated Irrigation Project of the
National Irrigation Administration.
Flood Control
The Agno River overflows during season of heavy rain,
affecting some 16 Pangasinan towns. The San Roque reservoir has
a large holding capacity of 525 million cu.m. active storage and 120
million cu.m. flood surcharge where inflow during heavy rains are
stored and gradually released downstream. This attenuates the
perennial flooding of the river.
If necessary, during extreme flood events, the Flood
Forecasting and Warning System for Dam Operations of the
National Power Corporation in coordination with the Philippine
Atmospheric,
Geophysical
and
Astronomical
Services
Administration, regulates the volume of water to be released by
specifying the appropriate spillway gate openings to SRPC based
on extensive meteorological and flow gauge data transmitted to
the dam via redundant communication systems.
Peaking Power
The San Roque Hydro Electric Power Plant (SRHEPP) has
an installed capacity of 411 MW producing approximately 1,000
GW/year, providing renewable peaking energy to the Luzon Power
Grid. As a peaking power plant, SRHEPP provides the Luzon Power

BOYSEN Paints Cavite
Our trip Boysen Paints Philippines- Cavite for
is considered as one of my favorite destinations
during our CE V Plant Tour moments because of their
very interactive presentation about their company. It
is really fun maybe because BOYSEN Paints is all
about colours obviously were really also interested
on things that will give colour on something--like
houses. Were also seeing that working with BOYSEN
will be pretty fun, too. The idea of identifying
different shades of colours is so much love.

Attractive Landscaping. The Atlantic Coatings Incorporated or Boysen

September 7, 2016 Maynilad Water Treatment Plant (Alabang)

Maynilad Water Alabang
After witnessing different types of elite
houses in a popular village in Alabang, finally
we've reached another destinationMaynilad
Water Alabang. Forget the stinky smell inside
the plant, it's okay weve got our alcohol and
safety mask with us. Basically the place applies
the waste water management system where
there is a water to waste water cycle shown.
When there is a waste water treatment, it
involves sewerage and sanitation. And it is
good to know that this kind of waste water
treatment plant is established to prevent
untreated domestic water discharged through
the drainage polluting waterways.

September 8, 2016 La Mesa Treatment Plant II

La Mesa Treatment Plant II
Almost the same experience with the treatment plant tour in Alabang only that the water is not anymore stinky
because it is not anymore the sewerage kind of the plant. We were not allowed to take pictures that time; eat and drink
within the conference room. They treat the water which is coming from a body of water in Manila that's why we didn't
smell any stinky smell. Hating the fact that they didn't allow us to take pictures because equates nothing to contribute
when we are required to pass anything for documentation. A spy camera should be handy that day but no girl was not a
James Bond girl or a Mission Impossible Female Protagonist to have one. So I, Graciella, had recorded the entire
discussion inside the treatment plant.
For the intro, the first speaker who is an apprentice of the engineer had encouraged students to try to make
texturizing water as part of the profession, relating to water engineering topics.
For the next topic, Engr. Patrick Vega was the next speaker, from Water Supply Operations of La Mesa Treatment
Plant II. He asked if we students are drinking water from the faucet. Majority of the students said no. He also explained
that the fresh water around the globe is only 1% of all of the bodies of water on earth and majority of Engr. Patrick Vegas
discussion is the water source, the water osmosis and how does the water treatment plant work.

PANEL SYSTEMS (Walls| Roofs |Floors)

This place is just wow. Were always amazed with
the machines despite of a very gray vibe inside the panel
system factory. The said panel is a composite sandwich
type structural panel composed of high tensile wires
densely welded together, an expanded polystyrene (EPS)
core, and concrete panels for exterior faces. It is also
lightweight, economical and a modern alternative to
concrete hollow blocks although hollow blocks are the
originally cheap and fire-resistant construction materials.

roofs, and floors.]
The steel reinforced concrete panels are composed of a lightweight core (expandable polystyrene) sandwiched
between smooth welded wire fabrics and held together by spreader wires pierced through the polystyrene core and
welded together on both sides. This core composition
makes the panels easy to install as they are lightweight
and easy to carry. The panels may be used as both
interior and exterior load-bearing walls, roof, or flooring
material.
When fully installed, the polystyrene core, steel
mesh and mortar plaster support one another for greater
flexibility to resist seismic and wind forces for better
protection against earthquakes and other forces of
nature as compared to traditional methods of
construction.

densely welded together, an expanded polystyrene (EPS)
core, and concrete panels for exterior faces. The steel
reinforced concrete panels provide tensile and compressive strength. The EPS core separates and stabilizes the panels
against buckling under edge wise compression, torsion or bending. The core also functions as a thermal and acoustic
insulation.
Lightweight and economical, the SRC Panel System is the modern alternative to concrete hollow blocks (CHB) as a
building material; it has far greater benefits than using CHB.

National Center for Transportation Studies in UP Diliman
Anyone can be inspired to pursue their dream to take a masters degree major in Transportation Engineering. Its also our
first time to be in UP Diliman. Guess what, Graciella was also one of the winners from their simple game. The game is about
answering their questions, multiple choices. The seminar is about the Traffic Administration Course. The NCTS team showed us their
studies about preventing drunken motorists on highways and vehicles that don't observe the required accurate speed limit in
expressways. They showed us different kinds of devices such as the BAC Limit Inhaler to determine if the driver is drunk; the Traffic
CCTV Camera to determine whose vehicle is not observing speed limit; Air Quality Monitoring Project Equipment in Operation. They
also toured us in a caravan called HORIBA where there is a study about the fumes in the environment relating to the smoke-belching
vehicles and clean air.

How is alcohol measured?
The amount of alcohol that is contained within the bloodstream can be measured by
o Blood Test
o Urine Test
o Breath

Factors that Influence BAC

1. Weight- A larger person has more blood to dilute the alcohol, and so will take longer to reach the same BAC as a smaller
person

MEGAWIDE Construction
Again, they didn't allow us to take photos of the building construction but it is a great experience to talk with the
on-site Civil Engineers as they give you the tips to nail it whenever you will be hired to be an on-site construction
engineer as well. These experienced professionals taught us to be really inquisitive at all times especially if we honestly
don't know every single thing. I'm also then looking forward to be an on-site engineer because I see such beauty in the
job. I mean beautiful mess. I never dreamed to be prisoned inside an office for eight hours every single day and maybe I
will enjoy this job because you will not sit all day. We've made it up to the eighth floor of the building and it is really
amazing. As we went through the eighth floor, the stairs are not yet that finished, a steep kind of staircase but it is okay
because we're always wearing the Personal Protective Equipment with us. Engr. Lorenz Letada was one of our mentors.

NAIA Expressway Project
One of my favorites is the NAIA Expressway Project because it is just amazing. Just imagine along the elevated
expressway with no cars going on it. Our batch was really lucky to have this kind of opportunity to witness the progress of
the expressway project especially when we went near the newly-finished toll gates. And because of this part of the tour,
my interest to both Transportation and Structural Engineering increased even more.

September 10-11, 2016 La Vista Resort Pansol; SM Mall of Asia; Going Back Home
And of course, save the best for the last. We enjoyed our stay in La Vista Resort in Pansol, Laguna. It was my first time in
the resort eventhough I've been in Pansol a lot of times when I was still living in Laguna for almost 15 years. We had a
Senior's Night when we had a beauty pageant with a twist as part of the program. Since my parents are staying in Laguna
for now, they visited me in Pansol to see me. I will come back to this resort because I never had a slide through the bigger
pool. I ate a lot of protein that night of Sept. 9 so I swore to myself to take on some veggie diet next week. September 10
morning is our check out and before checking out I made I had a photo-op with Snikko, a pet snake there who is really
tamed. Such a cutey and very non-war freak reptile had a posing around my neck and shoulders. Part also of our stay in
Laguna is buying pasalubong in Melgian Sweets which is just near to the Calamba Exit Expressway. We stayed in Mall of
Asia from lunch time up to sun down. We just had a walk there after lunch at the mall. And then after SM MOA, we are
readying ourselves to be back for Bicol. Graciella
At exactly 7am, the Bus 1 already reached the Legazpi City area. (End of Tour.)
