INTERNSHIP PLAN

I was mostly given the task of looking over the initial recruitment process that was
undertaken by Skywings for the different companies they were recruiting candidates for.
Skywings Dehradun branch core area of business mostly came from the BFSI sector, and
other areas include BPO and IT. I was in the BFSI department for the first four weeks and my
tasks during that period included posting of JDs into the various job portals, viz. Shine.com,
3

Indeed.com, TimesJobs.com, among others. The interested candidates would call and if I
found theme to be relevant to the job profile, I would upload their resume into the recruiting
companys portal for further processing. The candidates would be given a date for the faceto-face interview, mostly on the next day itself. I would follow up with the candidates about
the venue and time and the documents they need to arm themselves with.
During the entire process I was in touch with the candidates as well as the Regional HR of
the company concerned. I was looking over the profile of HDFC Life Insurance and Birla
Sun Life Insurance, occasionally for Kotak Life Insurance. My major concentration was on
the North-East and South regions of India.
For the purpose of making and attending calls I was given a company SIM as this task
involved doing regular follow-up with the candidates and keeping them informed and
motivated to turn up for the interview. I had seen that there were often no-shows, candidates
who wouldnt turn up for the interview; this discredited the consultancy and harmed its
repute.
The last two weeks were spent screening candidates CVs for various profiles under the BPO
sector, viz. Voice and Accent Trainer, Soft-Skills Trainer, AM-WFM, etc. Unlike other
profiles, this required making cold-calls and explaining the job profile to the candidates. For
this I took info of the candidates from various job portals, and made calls accordingly.

METHODOLOGY

I worked at Skywings for six weeks, and below is the week by week summary of the work I
did there:

WEEK 1

The first week acted as an ice-breaker and took some time adjusting to the new work routine,
something that I was never used to. I learned about the recruitment process and how
companies outsource recruitment activities to consultancies who look over this task. I posted
various JDs online to the portals of HDFC, Birlaand carried out screening of candidates for
an international BPO Teleperformance.
I learned various kinds of persuasion tactics to get the employees interested in the profile.
Also, I learned how to weed out the unwanted and irrelevant resumes from the massive
amount of resumes that I received.

WEEK 2

The second week was similar to what I did in the first week, but I got better at my task of
sorting the important resumes from the herd. If a candidate turned out to be really good with
necessary educational and job experience I would forward that resume to my senior who was
looking over the same profile.
It was during the second week that more interns came in and the job was further divided
amongst us. The job posting part was given to the new intern while I was made to
comprehensibly look over the profile of HDFC and Birla.

WEEK 3

By the third week, the candidates that I had shortlisted got selected for the company. This
acted as a great motivator and acted as a catalyst to the work I was doing. Over and above
this I learned how to maintain the database of different candidates that were being sent to the
interview. For this I learnt the advanced usage of MS Excel, as it was helpful in keeping a
record of the candidates along with their name, contact no, email, etc.

WEEK 4

Along with looking over the profiles of HDFC and Birla Sun Life, I was also looking for
various other profiles in my fourth week. There was a job opening for the position of an HR
Executive in Indore for an international BPO, Teleperformance. There werent many
candidates available as the candidate data from the various job portals had been exhausted.
So, I made calls to the Placement Cell of various management colleges in Indore and sought
the candidate data form them. Eventually we got several interested candidates for the
position.
I also learned various other techniques of Head-hunting and finding out the relevant
candidates using the least amount of resources. I learnt how to source candidates from
LinkedIn, as it was a very facile way to get candidates and without much hassle.

WEEK 5

In the penultimate week, I expanded my area of work from HDFC and Birla Sun Life and
into other companies like Kotak, IndusInd Bank, etc. It is noteworthy to mention that if one
candidate doesnt get selected in a company, the policy is to try and refer him to another
competitor in the same location. For example, if a candidate was rejected in Birla Sun Life,
we motivate him and urge him to sit for the HDFC interview. Although the pay package in
HDFC was low compared to Birla, but the selection process was much easier in HDFC Life.
During that period there was a recruitment drive for IndusInd Bank in Guwahati, Assam.
Being my native state it was easier to build a repertoire with the candidates and that led to
huge turn-outs for the interview.

WEEK 6
10

In my final week, I completed all my pending work- updating the database and sending a
copy to the Senior Manager, following up with the previous candidates who hadnt turned up
for the interview and asking them the reasons for their tardiness. I also made sure of
collecting all the relevant data needed to complete my project report.
By the final week, a total of eight candidates whose resumes I had shortlisted got inducted
into the company, making for a completely memorable experience.

11

FEEDBACK OF THE COMPANY

Initially I didnt have very high hopes regarding the company, but my outlook changed over
the course of the six weeks that I interned there. Although the Dehradun Branch has been

12

operational for over just one year, it has made great progress and has taken on competitors
like Tacky Minds in the city.
There is still some room for improvement. The employees have to bring their own laptop as
the office doesnt provide one. On being asked about it, they said that they are in the process
of relocating to a larger location in another part of the city, and once that is done, each
employee would be provided with a separate cabin and a work PC. The employees are
provided a local sim to conduct screening of the candidates and for telephonic interviews, but
the employees have to bring their own cell-phone.
Employees need to have their own means of transport and it should be mentioned that they
arent provided transport allowance. One reason for the low number of employees is the
average pay compared to other consultancies in Dehradun, mainly their chief competitor,
Tacky Minds. With a higher pay, Skywings can attract better talent and that will surely act as
a catalyst for their growth.

CONCLUSION

Life as an intern was completely different to what I had in mind before joining the
organisation, not even remotely close to the torrid stories our seniors had for us, like fetching
coffee for your peers, getting the Xerox done, picking up the boss daughter from school and
14

the like. On the contrary, it was an emotionally satisfying one, especially when the candidates
that I had screened eventually got inducted into the organisation. However, the first couple of
days took a bit getting used to, unsure of the corporate terrain and everything seemed new
and different.
The workplace was a fun and jovial one, filled with sincere and hard-working souls. There
were a lot of interesting folks over there and their stories made for great stress-busters during
the midst of the Dehradun Summer.
Most days would follow the same routine. Posting job vacancies on job portals, screening
CVs, making calls, sending interview venue to the candidates and following up with them
and keeping them updated about their interview status.
It was mostly fun, but the difficult part of it was the calls made to south Indians. The
difference of accent was like a huge communication gap, and it took me couple of days to get
used to their accent, as the only time I had heard south Indians speak was in movies. It
became worse when the candidates would start throwing tantrums.
Since I focused on Recruitment process, I was given the task of job postings on various
portals. When it comes to computers, I am at my absolute best. For me it was like a walk in
the park. Supplemented by my new 4G connection and couple of keyboard shortcuts; these
tasks became a walk in the park.
I am glad I chose Skywings as it was during those 6 weeks that brought out the creative best
in me and revived the artist lying dormant all this while as I got back to my writing and
painting. I learned so many things about life, job, struggle; and these are things that would
remain with me for the rest of my life.
