LTC 4240: Art for Children
Lesson Title: Gravity Art Paintings
Big Idea*: Man has explored using different materials throughout time and across cultures to create art
Lesson Overview/Summary*: The students will be exploring the force of gravity and will be creating their own
creative art pieces based on their gravity drippings. This lesson involves a lot of creative thinking and
imagination.

Grade Level*: Kindergarten

Class Periods Required:
(please circle)
1

Key Concepts (3-4): What you want the students to know.*

1. Visual Art: How to use their imagination to create their own art piece
2. Literacy: How to take meaning from a book about the force of gravity
and apply it to their real life experiences using their own thoughts and
ideas.
3. Science: Applying what they have learned about gravity from the read
aloud to their real life experiences.

Essential Questions (3-4)*:

1. What effect does the force of gravity have on paint?
2. What kind of stories can be told through gravity paintings?
3. How does gravity influence artwork?
4. How can one explore the force of gravity with art?

Lesson Objectives: (Excellent resource at http://www.teachervision.fen.com/curriculum-planning/new-teacher/48345.html?

for_printing=1&detoured=1): What you want the students to do. *
1. Visual Art: The students will be able to . . .
Use their imagination to create a final art piece using their gravity paint drippings and exploring different materials to work with
2. Literacy: The students will be able to . . .
Listen carefully to the read aloud about the force of gravity
Read and reflect about the read aloud
Expressing thoughts and ideas through art
3. Science:
Discuss the effect gravity has on the paint when dropped onto the construction paper

1. Visual Art:
VA:Cr2.1.Ka: Through experimentation, builds skills in various media
and approaches to art making.
VA:Cr2.2.Ka: Identify safe and non-toxic art materials, tools, and
equipment.
2. Literacy: (Missouri Early Learning Standards)
I. Symbolic Development
1. Represents feelings and ideas in a variety of ways
Represents feelings and ideas through art and
construction
4. Science: (Missouri Early Learning Standards)
I.
Physical Science
2. Investigates properties of objects and materials
Experiments with objects and materials to gather
information and observe reactions

Content Areas Integrated*:

1. Visual Art (Inspiration Artist: Jackson Pollock) abstract painting using
drips of paint as a way to express emotions or show ones feelings or
thoughts.
2. Literacy: reading and discussing the book I fall down by Vicki Cobb
while also representing their own feelings and ideas through their art
3. Science: integrating the force of gravity with paint

Identify & define common vocabulary that connect the art form with
the other identified content areas:
Cause/effect: understanding that every action as a reaction.
Gravity: the idea that everything is attracted toward the center of the
earth.
Point of view: Expressing ideas and thoughts from different points of
view.
Reflecting: Thinking more specifically about a topic or idea.
Exploration: Venturing into new thoughts and ideas and seeing what
works and may not work.
Materials: Using whatever art materials you would like to construct art
piece.

Lesson Activities & Procedure(s) (please be very specific):

First day:
1. First, we will read the book I Fall Down by Vicki Cobb as a read
aloud.
2. Discuss what we learned about the force of gravity from the book.
3. We will then make an anchor chart about gravity to refer back to if
we need to.
4. Next, I will model what we need to do for this lesson.
We need white construction paper, easels, different
colors of paint, water to mix the paint with,
spoons/paint brushes, different materials to complete art
piece with.

First, I will demonstrate how to mix the paint and water

to make the paint a little watery.
The student will then pick their color paint and will mix
it with the water.
I will then show the students that they can use a spoon
or a paintbrush to drip their paint onto their construction
paper and see it fall.
5. The students will then do the Gravity painting part of the lesson
using the easels so that the paint can drip from the top.
6. Let painting dry
Second day:
1. The students will then take out their gravity paintings from the
previous day.
2. Next, I will tell the students that they can create a final art piece
depicting whatever they want from their paint drippings. I will then
give a few examples.
3. The students will be able to use whatever materials there are in the
classroom to create their final piece.
Anticipatory Set (Gaining Attention)*:
To gain the attention of the students, I will show the students a picture of
the first step in the process of this lesson (the gravity paint drippings).
This will gain the attention of the students because they will wonder
how they will create similar paintings.

Closure (Reflecting Anticipatory Set):

After the students have created their final art piece, they will have the
opportunity to share what they created and how they got the idea to
create it.

Formative Assessment strategy:

The formative assessment will be throughout the read aloud of the
gravity book, the completing of the anchor chart, and the creation of
their art pieces. I will be looking for any misconceptions the students
may have throughout every step of the project.

Summative Assessment strategy*:

The summative assessment will be more formal. While the students are
participating in the gravity part of the lesson, I will be taking anecdotal
notes to assess the students knowledge of how gravity works.

What student prior knowledge will this lesson require/draw upon?

The prior knowledge that the students have that will require the students to draw upon will be their listening skills during a read aloud, their
ability to discuss with the class about ideas they have and or questions they have. In addition, the students will also have had prior experience with
paint and many other materials as a way to create artwork.
How will you engage students in imagining, exploring, and/or experimenting in this lesson?
I will be engaging students in an extensive amount of imagining, exploring, and experimenting. The students will have to use a lot of imagination
to create their final art piece using the gravity paint drippings. The students will be exploring many different materials as a way to create their
final piece, and finally, the students will be experimenting with the paint drippings and how gravity effects those drips on their construction paper.
How will this lesson allow for/encourage students to solve problems in divergent ways?
The students will be problem solving by coming up with ways to create their final art piece using the gravity drippings from the previous day. The
students will also be seeing what may work as a way to show what they want to show and what may not work. For example, if the students would
like to use ribbon on their final piece then they will have to problem solve how to make the ribbon stay on the construction paper.
How will you engage students in routinely reflecting on their learning?
The students will reflect upon their learning about gravity after the read aloud, when they are creating the anchor chart. Also, they will be
reflecting on their art at the end of the lesson. The students will be discussing their art pieces and explaining them to the class.
How will you adapt the various aspects of the lesson to differently-labeled students?
To challenge certain students, I will encourage them to create a story out of their final art piece. More specifically, write in their own words on
paper, explaining their final art piece. For students who may be struggling, I will work one on one with them to help brainstorm ideas of what they
could draw. For example, I will ask the students thoughtful and meaningful questions to help guide them into coming up with ideas of their own.
What opportunities/activities will students be given to revise and improve their understandings and their work?
After the discussion of everyones final art piece, the students will be able to complete the lesson again during their choice time at the end of the
day if they would like.
What opportunities/activities will you provide for students to share their learning in this lesson?
At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to share their learnings of gravity and how gravity affected their final art pieces. In addition,
they students will be able to share their final art pieces and share why they chose to create their piece.
