Unit 3 paper

3 We believe that through the Atonement of Christ, all mankind may be saved, by obedience to
the laws and ordinances of the Gospel.
4 We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are: first, Faith in the Lord
Jesus Christ; second, Repentance; third, Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth,
Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost.
In article of faith 3-4, the principles discussed are the atonement and the question, what
is the gospel? The atonement is for everyone, in the 1985 April conference a talk called,
Willing to Submit was given talking about how we knew the trials we would face before
coming to this earth. We were foreordained to have this life and we chose what we wanted to
face and what we could handle. What is the Gospel? The gospel is the love of god, resurrection
and enduring to the end. In 3 Nephi 27: 13-22, the steps of the gospel are Come, Repent,
Baptism, Holy Ghost, and Work. If we follow these steps of the Gospel we will have it to its full
ability and receive blessings from the Lord. In both article of faiths, we learn that we will be
saved by grace. In Alma 11:37 it states, 37 And I say unto you again that he cannot save them in
their sins; for I cannot deny his word, and he hath said that no unclean thing can inherit the
kingdom of heaven; therefore, how can ye be saved, except ye inherit the kingdom of heaven?
Therefore, ye cannot be saved in your sins. We are promised we will be saved by grace if we
follow the atonement and follow the Gospel to its fullest ability. (225)
The Gospel is relatable to the world because these principles will never change. The
atonement applies to EVERYONE. Whether you are a member or not, our Brother suffered for
our sins and wants each and every one to return to him. Many people believe in holy water and
that if you talk to your priest you will be forgiven of your sins, back in the day priests charged
money to give you a ticket to heaven which will guarantee your entrance to Heaven. These
teachings are not correct, although talking to your priest could help. Just like we talk to our
Bishop when we mess up and make a mistake, however we also go through the process of
repentance and we also follow the plan the Lord has for this gospel. We will be saved by Grace if
we follow these principles of the Gospel. (145)
These articles of faiths help me follow the gospel each day of my life. When times get
hard, these principles are here to help me remember what I am supposed to do and how I should
do it. When I mess up and commit a sin, I beat myself up about it. I feel horrible and upset that I
have disobeyed the commandments given to protect me. With these article of faiths, it reminds
me that I can repent and be forgiven for my sins. I am extremely grateful for this opportunity and
for my Savior who suffered for my sins. He knew the sins I would commit and what I would
struggle with as I go through this life. He knows us, He knows what we are capable of and what
we are easily messing up with. Therefore, He gave us this principle of the Gospel. I have used it
many times in my life, for big or small things. The atonement means so much to me and I have a
testimony of this Gospel. I love my Heavenly Father and my Savior and everything they have
done for the children on this earth. (195)
