Assignment 12
In order to know if youre being an effective teacher to your students, there needs to be a
type of assessment to prove their gain of knowledge. Assessment is the process that teachers
use to gather information to make decision about their students learning. We tend to think that
assessments come right after a lesson has been taught, but that doesnt necessarily apply to
everyone, every teacher has their own philosophy and they use the technique they believe is
effective and appropriate to gather that information from their students. Students arent the only
ones being assessed, teachers are also being observed and tested from the moment they enter
the teaching program. Current teacher evaluation consist of, national or state test, which takes
place before and after the program, grades and coursework through the program, student test
scores, superview observation, and annual supervisory.
Assessment is a very important asset that will demonstrate the ability of the teacher to
transmit information, as well has the students ability to obtain the information. We want teachers
who have the capability to teach in a creative and effective way, but in order for that to happen
teacher have to set standard and objectives for students to follow. Teachers need to set the bars
high, that way the students have more motivation to reach the goal, but how are we going to
know if the student is even putting the effort to reach those standards that are being given?
Assessment is the answer to the question, if we are evaluating our student throughout the topic
that is being taught then we are going to come upon the conclusion that they either learning or
struggling. That way teachers can modify or give a better explanation for future lessons, this
asset is to help teachers become effective and for students to have a good understanding of the
material.
There are a variety of assessments that can come into action from the start, middle or
end of a lesson, it just depend on what you believe is the correct matter to gather that
information from each student. Formative assessment is the continual process used to monitor
learning progress that occurs during a lesson or unit. It helps teachers identify the weaknesses
or strength that students might be facing, this provides feedback on how the teacher can
manage and solve a problem to create a higher level of education. This type of assessment may
include, pretests, classroom and homework assignments, group participation and responses,
teacher-student conversations, and self-evaluation and goal setting to gather all of the
information. Summative is another assessment that can be practiced. Its used at the end of a
unit to assess if the learning goal has been met. It can consist of, end-of-unit project, a written
paper, an oral presentation of the subject, or a test that covers the entire unit. All of these
assessments can be compared to the goal or standard that is given to measure the student's
development. Norm-referenced assessment compares students results with a large norm. This
is a test that is given through a computer to evaluate the reading and math ability of the student,
its given twice a year. Parents have a say weather they want their child to take the test or not,
and the results may be discussed with teacher.
I personally would use the formative assessment. I believe that it would be more
effective in gathering my students learning progress in a faster and actuate way. I plan on giving

pretests before I start my lesson, that way I know exactly what they know from the start and
compare it to the results and the end when I give them the same pretest. Between that, I will
give them homework to practice the skills at home. I would also want them to participate among
each other because I am a strong believer that students can learn off of each other and
sometime even explain the concept better than the teacher might. I will determine whether or
not my students are learning by the results I receive from these assessments. If I see that my
students are not learning than I would talk to them individuality to figure out what is needed to
do in order to form a learning environment.
Assessments are always being used to determine the growth of knowledge and ability.
Its a very important element to become a successful educator and student. People need to see
the development throughout the years of schooling or throughout a lesson and the best way to
obtain that data is by giving assessments. Getting an education is the most important thing a
person can ever hold, and we need to ensure that very student is receiving a well rounded
education. Thats a reason why teachers are also being evaluated each school year, to see if
their competency has either increased or decreased and if they have decreased than the
principle gives them feedback on what they need to work on. Each teacher has a different
philosophy about assessments, but my philosophy falls underneath formative assessment and
how I believe that assessments are a wonderful way to see the progress of students and
teachers.
