Kodagu
Kodagu is one of the districts of Karnataka. Kodagu is also called by the
anglicized name of Coorg. Kodagu is the most beautiful hill station in
the state. Kodagu is situated on the eastern slope of the Western
Ghats. The highest peak of Kodagu, Tadiandamol, has an altitude of
1750 m; Pushpagiri is 1715 m high. The main river is the Cauvery River
(Kaveri), which takes birth at Talakaveri on the eastern side of the
Western Ghats, and with its tributaries, drains the greater part of

communities are Gowdas, Brahmins, Christians and Jains. Tribes such as
Yeravas, Kurubas, Airies and Kudiyas, who are believed to be the

The silk produced in this region forms the input for the famous Mysore Silk. Ramanagar is the
largest market for silk cocoons in Asia.
Cocoon Market, Ramanagaram, Karnataka (India) is one of the largest cocoon
markets in Asia as well as in the world. It is also called as Cosmopolitan Cocoon Market
because of the people from different states bring their cocoons to this market. On an average 40
Metric tones of cocoons are being transacted daily in this cocoon market. In Ramanagaram town
alone 1000 families are having reeling units and there are 893 Charkas, 3140 cottage basins
(improved), 78 multi-end reeling units and 01 Automatic Reeling Unit of 400 Ends capacity. There
are also about 90 Twisting units functioning at this place.
To create quality awareness amongst the farmers, a Cocoon Testing Center was established by
Central Silk Technological Research Institute, Central Silk Board in the year 2002. This center is
headed by a Scientist-C and supported by three Technical Assistants. The major mandate of this
center is testing and grading of bi-voltine cocoons. About 40-45 cocoon lots are being tested by
this center on daily basis. Based on the test results, this office gives technical guidance to the
farmers for producing good quality cocoons. Besides guiding the farmers, technical guidance is
also extended t o the Multi-end reelers to produce gradable raw silk yarn.

Idukki

This District has the agro-climatic conditions suitable for the cultivation of
plantation crops like tea, coffee, rubber, coconut, cardamom, pepper, etc. The
District acquired 2nd place in the state in agriculture produces. Small and
marginal farmers are predominant in the district. However, in High land areas
there are large holdings of plantations of tea, cardamom etc. owned by
corporate bodies and private agencies.
This District, a creation of God's natural beauty, has Tea Gardens in the north
while major hilly areas have Cardamom plantation. Hilly terrain, lack of proper
irrigation facilities and accessibility, forest cover and topography in general

Kottayam
Kottayam has a mountainous terrain as well as low-lying areas very
close to sea level. Depending on the location different varieties of food
crops as well as cash crops are cultivated. Rice is the principal crop

extensively cultivated in low-lying regions like Vaikom and Upper

Kuttanad. The district occupies the third position in the production of
rice in Kerala behind Palakkad and Alappuzha. Though it is the staple
food of the people, unfortunately the area under cultivation is
dwindling due to more lucrative cash crops like rubber plantations for
which Kottayam significantly contributes to the overall rubber
production in India. Kottayam occupies the first position in the
production of rubber in India. Rubber trees provide a stable income for
the farmers and climate is ideal for rubber plantations. Though
highlands are more suitable, the cultivation has spread to almost every
where. Apart from these, other crops cultivated are tapioca, coconut,
pepper, vegetables etc. In order to enhance the rubber productivity,
government of India has set up Rubber board and Rubber research
institute in Kottayam.[6][7]
Enjoy a good international market because they are very famous world wide for
their pure quality and heavenly aroma. Almost all types of spices are grown in
Kottayam including pepper, chili, turmeric and cardamom. Kerala is regarded as
the main hub of spice trade in India and most of the spices in Kerala are
produced in Kottayam. There are several spice plantations in Kottayam, which
produce large quantities of spices that are exported.
There are many important spice exporters in Kottayam, who serve many
international clients. Some of the most important spice exporters of Kottayam
are Asian Spices, Enjayes Spices & Chemical Oils Ltd. and Mount Sahiya. These
exporters specialize in different types of pepper, such as white pepper, green
pepper, pink pepper, red pepper and also green spices, chili, turmeric and many
more. This is one of the major reasons why the spices from Kottayam are said to
be one of the most important export products of the region.
The economy of Kottayam is also largely benefited by the huge revenues that it
earns from the export of the different varieties of spices. Thus, it can be said that
the economic development of Kottayam depends largely on the production and
export of spices.
Some of the famous varieties of Spices from Kottayam are listed below:

Camboge - The seeds of Camboge are sown during the months of

August and September and the sprouting of the seeds occurs by
December. With the onset of the monsoon showers, the seeds are planted
and the seedlings bear the spice by the age of 12-15 years. The flowering
takes place during the months of January and March, while the fruits
mature by the month of July.

Turmeric - The land is prepared for the sowing of turmeric seeds in the
months of February and March. With the pre-monsoon showers of April,
the turmeric plants are sown, along with maize, chilly and colocasia as the
intermediate plants.

Nutmeg - The trees of nutmeg need shade and are hence grown
with Erythrina and Albizia. Sometimes the plants of banana are also grown
along with nutmeg since the former acts as the shade trees. The nutmeg
spices from Kottayam are sown before the onset of the southwest
monsoon.

Pepper - Known as the "King of Spices", the pepper or the Piper

nigrum has numerous buyers in the western world and is able to attract a
high range of price from its customers. Pepper is one of the indigenous
spices of Kottayam.

Tamarind - The seeds are planted during the months of June and
November. The seedlings start yielding after 8-10 years while the budded
and grafted seedlings take 4-5 years to yield. Harvesting is carried out
between January and April.

Cinnamon - Cinnamon is grown at an altitude of 1800m in a deep

sandy soil that is full of humus. Seeds are sown at the very beginning of
the southwest monsoon and a span of 3 years is required before
harvesting. Harvesting is carried out twice during the months of May and
November.

Cardamom- Regarded as the "queen of spices', cardamom or the

Elettaria Cardamomum Maton is exported to the foreign countries by the
names of "Alleppey Green Bold" (AGB), "Alleppey Green Extra Bold"
(AGEB) and the "Alleppey Green Superior" (AGS). Sowing is done in the
month of September and harvesting is done after a span of 3 years.

Vanilla - Seeds of this important Kottayam spice is sown with the

onset of the monsoon season. Flowering takes place during the third year
and the pod is harvested after 9-11 months.

Clove - Seeds are planted during the months of May and June or within the
months of August and September. Trees start yielding their products by the end
of 7-8 years.

Mango-Ginger

- Seeds are planted during the pre-monsoon showers and it

takes a span of 3-4 weeks for germination.

Ginger

- Seeds are planted during the first fortnight in April following the premonsoon showers. The vegetable ginger becomes ready for harvesting within
245-260 days.

The exact location of Muziris is still not known to historians and archaeologists.

In fact historians have criticised the attempts by groups to rush into conclusions. [10] It is
generally speculated to be situated around present day Kodungallur, a town situated 18
miles north of Cochin.[11] Kodungallur in central Kerala figures prominently in the ancient
history of southern India as a vibrant urban hub of the Chera rulers. [12] A series of
excavations were conducted at the village of Pattanam inNorth Paravur by Kerala

Clove, the dried unopened flower buds of the evergreen tree, Syzygium aromaticum,
(Syn. Eugenia caryophyllus) is an important spices noted for its flavour and medicinal
values. It is indigenous to Moluccas island (Indonesia) and was introduced to India
around 1800 A.D. by the East Indian Company in their spice garden in Courtallam, Tamil
Nadu. The major producers of this spice today are Indonesia, Zanzibar and Madagascar.
World production is estimated to be 63,700 tonnes. Indonesia alone accounts for 66 %
of the world production. The important clove growing regions in India now are the

Nilgiris, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts of Tamil Nadu ,

Calicut, Kottayam, Quilon and Trivandrum districts of Kerala and South Kanara district of
Karnataka.
Food processing industry uses both whole and ground form of cloves in various
preparations. Clove oil is used in perfumeries, pharmaceuticals and flavouring industries.
Clove oleoresin is also increasingly used in the food processing industry. In Indonesia,
the major part is absorbed for making KRETEK cigarette industry. The clove is an
evergreen tree often reaching a height of 7 to 15 metres. Leaves posses plenty of oil
glands on the lower surface.
