EVART She wasnt supposed to leave her military base

most evenings.
Former Evart farm girl Daisy
Cotterman didnt let that regulation deter her, though. She
would sometimes leave her
Long Beach, California military
barracks and sneak off post
with sailors by crouching down
and hiding in a car with them.
She was caught occasionally
trying to sneak back to her base,
but the punishment didnt deter
her for long.
Now those high jinks remain
from her fading recollections
of the World War II years and
bring a ready chuckle to her
lips.
I did a lot of things I wasnt
supposed to when I was a
WAVE, she says.
Born Daisy Edwards on Dec.
20, 1922, Cotterman grew up on
a farm near Dead Mans Corner
southeast of Evart and attended
the old Tule School in Orient
Township.
Her family farmed with horses, and Cotterman remembers
cultivating crops and dragging
fields behind a team of them.
Cotterman and her two sisters
also helped with the milking
by hand, of course. She jokes
that she and her sisters left
home and then her dad bought a
milking machine.
Even while she was home on
the farm, Cotterman was something of a free spirit. One of
her responsibilities was to help
with the milking a chore that
began each morning at 5.
One evening, Cotterman went
out with friends. She was just
returning home when her father was headed out the door to
milk.
He looked at me with a little
smile, Cotterman recalls. He
said, are you going to help
milk?
She hustled in the house and
changed into her farm clothes.
She went to the barn and, still
dazed from a lack of sleep, tried
to start the milking with her
usual cow. With a start, she

realized a bull was tied where
the cow normally was. Her dad,
she thought, was sending her a
message, and she decided she
would make it home early from
then on.
Japan bombed Pearl Harbor
just a couple of weeks before
Cotterman turned 19, an act
that drew the United States into
the war. She soon joined the war
effort. She started out by finding
employment at the Willow Run
Bomber Plant east of Ypsilanti
riveting wings on planes.
During 1942, the U.S. Congress established the WAVES
Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service. The
program was intended to allow

more male officers and enlisted

personnel to go to sea by using
WAVES in shore activities. The
guy Cotterman was dating eventually talked her into enlisting
in the WAVES. She was sent to
Hunter College in The Bronx,
New York, for her initial training where, she recalls, they
did a lot of marching and
from there was sent to Long
Beach.
Although she has forgotten
what many of her responsibilities at Long Beach were, she remembers helping ferry sailors
to their ships. She served in the
WAVES during 1944-45.
She had to wear her uniform
everywhere she went. She was

off base one time and was carrying her hat instead of wearing it. True to military form,
she encountered an officer who
ordered her to put her hat on.
The war ended, and Cotterman received her discharge and
returned to civilian life. She
eventually returned to Evart.
She now lives at Centennial
Arms, apartments managed by
the Evart Housing Commission.
Soon to turn 94, she is among
the dwindling few who served
in the war. Her hair is now gray,
and she has trouble recalling
some things.
She remains, though, Daisy
the Rivet Driver, a member of
the generation that won the war.

The blue cutzie dog-boneshaped dispenser is the clue
that our mystery photo involves Fido.
The rolls are plastic
bags which fit inside that
dispenser one at a time. (It
opens via the cap on the far
left of the photograph.)
The modest-sized bags
are pulled out one at a time
through the star-shaped
rubber gasket to help you
when cleaning up pet-droppings.
The neat and tidy system
can be attached to the leash
via the metal clip and then
any time the dog has a
bowel movement, the neighborhood need not suffer
a permanent, visible, and
odiferous reminder of your
recent visit.
(Your hand glides into
the interior of a clean bag,

from the goo as you grasp

the droppings, turning the
bag inside out as you withdraw your hand and in the
process, neatly and tidily

safely inside of the bag

into the trash.)

Obituary
Horst R. Kozitzki
RODNEY Horst R.
Kozitzki, of Rodney,
for merly of Evart,
passed away Monday,
December 5, 2016, at
Metron of Big Rapids.
He was 78.
Mr. Kozitzki was born
November 17, 1938, in
Lomdorf, Germany, to
Wilhelm and Helene
Erma (Wenzel) Kozitzki. He moved to the
United States in 1952.
Horst married Beverly
White in Barryton on
January 16, 1965. He resided in Evart where he
farmed for many years,
then moved to Rodney
in 1993. Mr. Kozitzki attended the North Evart
United Methodist
Church, the Barryton
Church of God, and
most recently, the Chippewa Lake Community
Church. He loved farming and animals and enjoyed vegetable and
flower gardening.
Horst is survived by
his wife of 51 years,
Beverly Kozitzki of Big
Rapids; twin sons, Kevin Kozitzki of Reed
City, Kerry (Jackie)
Kozitzki of Sand Lake;
his daughter, Angela

(Tad) Jennings of Evart; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his twin

brother, Lothar (Jane)
Kozitzki of St. Louis,
Michigan; two sisters,
Brigette (Chuck) Fleming of Chippewa Lake,
Renate (Dennis) Hartman of Barryton; and
several nieces and
nephews.
He was preceded in
death by his parents,
Wilhelm and Helene
Kozitzki; a brother,
Herb; and two sisters,
Sonya and Lydia.

Even the best prognosticators missed the

presidential race; their
miscalculations significantly impacted Michigans down-ballot results
from township treasurers
to House seats a clean
sweep across the board.
Since the Michigan
House of Representatives
didnt lose seats as predicted, the threat of up to 500
bills during Lame Duck
obviously wont happen,
but it appears the legislature now has positioned
a laser-like focus on one
main educational issue
the Michigan Public School
Educational Retirement
system (MPSERs).
The leadership wants
to switch MPSERs from a
Defined Benefit (DB) system to a Defined Contribution (DC) system think
403B or 401K. But, heres

the issue: the legislature is

trying to fix a problem that
doesnt even exist.
During the economic
slide the past 10 years,
the legislature correctly
intervened in 2007, 2010,
and again in 2012 to move
new employees to a hybrid
system, taking pressure off
MPSERs.
Governor Snyder signed
the changes into law and
this hybrid system is
working well, very well.
The hybrid system is already over 110 percent prefunded and the old MPSERs system trend lines are
all positive with solvency
around the corner and no
expectation of breaking
that positive, forward momentum. The fixes worked.
Here are five reasons why
the legislature shouldnt
mess with the pension
system during Lame Duck

2016: 1) the controlling

Board of MPSERs is not
in favor of switching from
DB to DC; 2) MPSERs isnt
broken and will be solvent
earlier than expected, because of the corrections; 3)
the topic is too complex to
correctly address in three
weeks without some unintended consequences; 4)
the upfront costs to convert
from DB to DC could reach
$1 billion that money
has to come from somewhere; 4) the Governor
is opposed to the switch;
and 5) it will continue to
discourage prospective
teachers to sign up for the
profession into the future.
Feel free to contact House
Rep Phil Potvin and Senator Darwin Booher and
remind them of these facts.

Shop Small Saturday

was a big success in Evart
By Andy Duffy
Weekly Voice

EVART Merchants in
Evart are smiling after successfully attracting shoppers to town the day after
Black Friday. Evart Downtown Development Authority director Al Weinberg
said the day was a big success. A number of business
owners agreed.
Michelle Ladd, owner of
Evart Pharmacy, said her
sales for the day doubled
her totals from last year.
She and others attributed
at least some up the upsurge in business to the advance planning merchants
performed.
Twenty-one businesses
joined to promote in-town
shopping. Led by Weinberg, they offered in-store
specials and also made up
a package of $500 worth of
gift certificates from Evart businesses. Shoppers
who got their passports
stamped at 12 businesses
were entered in a drawing
to win the gift certificates.
Ladd believes the passports were responsible for
bringing more shoppers to
her business.
There was increased
foot traffic in our store as
well as all the retailers
included on the passport.
Just getting people in the
stores is a big enough feat.
This allows everyone to see
exactly what businesses
offer, which seems to go underrated, Ladd said.
This was the second year
Evart businesses worked
to promote local shopping
the Saturday after Thanksgiving. And just as Ladd
did, Alan Bengry found his
sales increased over last
years.
It is not uncommon for
an event to begin to take
off as more people become
aware, said Bengry, owner
of Holihans Drug Store.
Bengry also gave credit
to the coordination of the
towns businesses. The
use of the passport card to
encourage folks to visit several businesses was very
successful at increasing
in-store traffic throughout
the day, he said. And, he

said he is looking forward

to participating with other
merchants to promote local
shopping next year.
The first Saturday after Thanksgiving Day is
known nationally as Small
Business Saturday. The
concept of supporting
small businesses is an idea
promoted by American
Express, a leading offerer
of credit cards. Small Business Saturday, in fact, is
a registered trademark
of the company. Evart
merchants dubbed the day
Shop Small Saturday.
Among the merchants
who appreciated the shop
small concept was June Essner, owner of Juneberry
Cottage.Essners business
features fabrics, gifts and
notions and sewing machine repairs.
The day went well for
me in terms of sales, Essner said. She found things
to like besides the ringing of the cash register,
though.
It was fun to see the
people on the streets walking around and visiting
other businesses. I heard
comments from customers similar to this. Wow, I
didnt know I could get that
in Evart. I was planning to
go to Mount Pleasant next
week for that, Essner
said.
An important function
of the day was to help
shoppers realize Evart is
thriving, Essner said. She
hopes townspeople will begin shopping in town more
before traveling elsewhere.
When people begin shopping in town, a synergy
starts, and new more diverse businesses will look
to open in Evart offering
more goods and services
and potential jobs right
here.
Like Essner, Ladd was
happy to see increased
community involvement.
It is much appreciated to
have this support for all
local businesses. We are
all very thankful for the
local support as well as
(Weinberg) with his continued and never-ending
assistance to help our community, Ladd said.
