Course Code: 12 ME 5DCDM2

Instructions:

Duration 3hrs
Max Marks: 100
Date : 18.12.2014

1. Answer any five full questions

2. Missing Data, if any may be assumed suitably
3. Use of Design Data Hand book is permitted
UNIT 1

1.

a) Give the differences between a straight beam and curved beam, showing stress
distribution pattern.
b) A crane hook has a trapezoidal section of inner sides 50mm and outer side 25 mm,
depth of 65 mm with an inner radius of curvature 65mm. Determine the maximum
load the hook can carry if the allowable strength is limited to 60 MPa.

2.

a) Derive expressions for stress induced and deflection in helical spring of circular
wire.
b) A railway carriage weighing 15kN & moving at 36km/hr is to be brought to rest by4
buffer springs of square c/s. The spring stiffness is 30N/mm. Assume spring index
as 5. And allowable shear stress for the spring material = 0.6GPa.
Take G = 80 GPa. Design the spring.

UNIT 2
3.

a) A multiple plate clutch is required to transmit 25kW of power at 1400 rpm. The
maximum and minimum diameters of discs are 300mm and 100 mm respectively.
Assuming coefficient of friction as 0.2, pressure between contact surfaces =
0.08MPa. Determine
(i)
The axial force required to engage clutch
(ii)
The number of friction surfaces
(iii)
The number of discs on the driver and driven shafts.
Assume uniform wear.

b) A simple band brake of drum diameter 600mm has a band passing over it with an
angle of contact of 225, while one end is connected to the fulcrum, the other end is
connected to the brake lever at a distance of 400mm from the fulcrum as shown in
the fig 2. The brake lever is 1m long. The brake is to absorb a power of 15kW at
720 rpm. Design the brake lever of rectangular cross-section, assuming depth to be
thrice the width. Take allowable stress as 80MPa. Assume = 0.3

UNIT 3
4.

a) Discuss types of loads to be considered in the design of a spur gear.

b) Design a pair of helical gears to transmit 12kW at 2400rpm of the pinion. The
velocity ratio required is 4:1, Helix angle is 23o. The centre distance is to be around
300mm. Pressure angle in the normal plane is 14.5o. Pinion material is cast steel
ASTM class B. Gear material is cast iron better grade.

5.

a) Obtain an expression for formative number of teeth for a bevel gear.

b) Design a pair of bevel gears to transmit 12kW at 300rpm of the gear and 1470 rpm
of the pinion. The angle between the shaft axes is 90o. The pinion has 20 teeth and
the material for gears is cast steel having o=183.33 MPa. Take service factor as
1.25 and check the gears for wear and dynamic load. Suggest a suitable hardness for
the gear pair.

UNIT 4
6.

a) List the properties of a good bearing material. Name the commonly used bearing
06
materials.
b) A shaft running at 600 rpm is supported in a bearing of 60 mm diameter and 60 mm 14
long. The viscosity of the oil is 0.014 Pa-sec and the temperature of the oil is 1100C.
The radial clearance is 0.03 mm. Determine the permissible load and the power lost
in the bearing if the bearing is well ventilated and there is no need for external
cooling. The temperature of the still air in the room is 20oC.
UNIT 5

7.

a) A 50 kW 1440 rpm motor is required to drive an air compressor through the medium 15
of V- Belting. The diameter of the motor pulley and compressor pulley are 250 mm
and 800mm respectively. The approximate center distance between the shafts is
1.5m. Select the suitable V-Belt.
b) What are the advantages and the disadvantages of the Chain drives?
