Backstroke Lesson
Objective:
The objective of the exercise is for students to learn how to successfully execute the backstroke.
Materials:
The exercise will require a swimming pool and 30 kick boards.
Alignment with State Standards
The student demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical
activities.
The student will demonstrate and apply mature motor skills, manipulation of objects and rhythmic concepts during modified,
individual, or team activities.
Background Information:
At the beginning of the class, the teacher needs to place all of kick boards by the pool so that it is accessible for class.
Engagement:
The ninth graders will be engaged as soon as they enter the pool due to being in a different environment. There is a potential
for distractions with splashing. This can be limited by remaining alert to any antagonizing students. There will be positive
motivation for completing what is required. The motivation will be to jump off diving boards at the end of class.
Exploration:
1. The students will sit in the locker room to take attendance before walking into the pool area.
2. Once the students arrive at the pool, they will sit in the bleachers so that the teacher can explain what is to be accomplished
during this day in the pool.
3. The students will then be directed to go into their pre-determined lanes for class.
4. The students will be directed to swim a warm-up lap.
5. The teacher will teach the stroke mechanics of the backstroke and direct the students to kick on their back with a back board.
6. The students will then be directed to swim laps of various drills as directed by the teacher.
7. At the end the students will swim a lap for the basis of formative evaluation in order to determine the lesson plan for the next
day.
8. If the students have participated in the activity, they will be permitted to jump off diving boards.
Application:
The students can apply this by performing this activity with their friends outside of school. Physical activity is important for
students which is why learning this activity can be crucial to them.
Closure:
At the end of the activity, the teacher will have all of the students sit down. At this point, the teacher will ask them if they
enjoyed the activity and ask them about what their favorite part was.
Differentiation:
Students with a physical disability should not have any issues with this activity since swimming can be a good sport for
physical disabilities. Adaptions may be made for extreme cases.
