Title: Immigration suitcase


Grade Level: 3rd
Unit: Social Studies, Immigrants
TEKS: 3.12 The student is expected to gives examples of community
changes that result from individual or group decisions.
Approx. Time: 30 min
Materials needed:
Immigration video
Cut out of suitcases
Social Studies Alive textbook
Anticipatory setting:Give examples of why a family might migrate, struggles
of a person that migrates, results people face when they migrate.
Opening:
Objective: The students will be able to tell the difference between an
immigrant and a tourist by reading the social studies alive book and
discussing the immigration suitcase.
A Students.
B tell the difference between a tourist and an immigrant.
C after reading the social studies alive textbook and completing the
immigration suitcase.
D 90% of the time.
Relevancy: parents that have moved for an area to another for job
opportunities.

Instructional Input: explained, used t-chart for push and pull factors, discuss
what the difference is between a tourist and an immigrant.
Modeling: have my own suitcase done so they can see what it is going to
look like at the end also watch the video that explains a little bit about an
immigrant.
Guided Practice: Will go step by step with them and discuss as a class.
Also answer questions about struggles they face, what is an immigrant, and
what are some push and pull factors
Independent Practice: They will fill in the what I know about immigrants and
tourist box.
Assessment: 90% of the time immigrants are being discussed as well as
the push and pull factors.
Closure: Ask what the difference is between a tourist and an immigrant
Sponge: Use the suitcase activity for another topic like what they think
people would bring when traveling on the mayflower.
