Dear Dr. Bruce,
Throughout my academic career, I have written several papers of varying quality. Each of
these attempts largely were written upon gut instinct, using whatever I felt would work well in
the situation. In English-360, I learned how to make it all work and why it all works. Through
the course of your class, I learned how to apply the various skills of technical writing, such as
writing a professional resume, using a rhetorical triangle to break down an article, using citations
in the best possible way, and use of passive and active voice to write a readable paper. The
selected works in my portfolio demonstrate a clear understanding of the six SLOs of the class:
rhetorical focus, ethical citation, persuasion, organization, language and design, and
collaboration.
The major project of my portfolio is Team Screwits IFixit Project Proposal. This
assignment shows competence in the SLOs of rhetorical focus, persuasion, organization, and
collaboration. The proposal was written with the purpose of persuading IFixit to allow our group
to conduct the project. To that end, the Proposal was written with a formal tone and aimed
towards the administrators of ifixit, demonstrating proficiency in rhetorical focus. In addition,
the Proposal shows a clear understanding of persuasion. In order to convince IFixits tech writers
to allow us to work on the project, the proposal needed to be persuasive by showing a
professional paper and ample courtesy. We also provided ample reason to conduct the project, as
there were no satisfactory guides to repair the Acurite Weather Center prior to it. The paper also
showed excellent organization, as it used headers and chunking to divide the various subjects,
allowing readers to get the information they want quickly and easily. Lastly, this paper
demonstrates Collaboration. All members of Team Screwit worked in equal part to edit and
organize this paper.
The excerpt of the Team Charter demonstrates an understanding of Ethical citation and
Organization. Information from the Textbook and the provided Corrective Action Policy PDF to
define disciplinary guidelines and conflict management procedures. Information from both of
these sources is cited properly in the charter as well as in the bibliography, demonstrating ethical
citation. In addition, the organization of this excerpt of the charter shows the steps of conflict
management as well as the groups timetable clearly.

Lastly, this cover letter fulfills the SLO requirement for language and design. This letter
uses a formal tone to deliver its message. It was written with a formal tone, using my grasp of
language to clearly deliver its message in an unbiased and fair manner.
Throughout this semester, I gained a high proficiency in each of these SLOs and learned
how to apply them in a meaningful way. They have provided me with a far better understanding
of the components of good writing. I will use what I learned in this class to better my capabilities
as a writer. I hope this letter is helpful in reading my portfolio.
Sincerely,
Henry Lwin
