5 HADITH ON URBAN CENTER AND COMMERCIAL AREA

1
Abdullah ibn Amr ibn Al-`Aas (May Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet passed one
day by Sa`d ibn Abi Waqas (May Allah be pleased with him) while he was performing wudu' (ritual
cleaning of body parts in preparation for prayer). The prophet asked Sa`d, "Why is this wastage?"
Sa`d replied "Is there wastage in wudu also?" The Prophet said, "Yes, even if you are at a flowing
river." (Ahmad and authenticated Ahmad Shakir)
This hadith stressed on how importance the natural resource are that we have to conserve them even
for the ritual uses. This hadith also teach not to waste since those who have the habit of wasting would
be the brothers of Satan.
2
Abu Zarr Al-Ghafari (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings
be upon him) said, "Removing harmful things from the road is an act of charity (sadaqah)."
(Authenticated by Al-Albani)
We were encouraged to do good things on our environment especially by keeping it clean. Besides
even the simplest good deed will be granted by Allah s.w.t. Our simple good deed might contribute to
a bigger effect to the society and environment.
3
Anas r.a narrates from the Prophet pbuh, There is none amongst the Muslims who plants the tree
or sow seed, and then a bird or a person, or an animal eats from it, but is regarded as charitable gift
for him.
Everything that we do in this world and the deed give benefits to the others, going to be counted as
sadaqah. In environment, human and animal also are part of it that we should not ignore or take it easy
because they are the element that completing each other in the environment.
4

Imam al-Bukhary narrated from the Prophet pbuh, This is a mount which is like us; we also love it.
The prophet also emphasize the role of love in treating the environment with care and affection. The
natural resource on earth need to be cared instead of been harmed.
5
Narrated by Mu`adh, hasan, by Al-Albani from the Prophet pbuh, "Beware of the three acts that
cause you to be cursed: relieving yourselves in shaded places (that people utilise), in a walkway or
in a watering place."
Hygiene and cleanliness (tahara) is so integral to Islam that it is actually a major sub-branch of
Muslim belief. Without physical hygiene, prayers are broken. Without clean facilities pollution ruins
cities, and without any effort to improve one's own purity, it becomes more difficult to prevent
external corruptions like littering.

5 QURANIC VERSE ON URBAN CENTER AND COMMERCIAL AREA

1
"To God belongs all that is in the heavens and in the earth, for God encompasses everything.
[Qur'an 4:126]."
God's knowledge and power covers everything. Therefore abusing one of his creations, whether it is a
living being or a natural resource, is a sin. All of God's creations are equal before God.
2

"Surely the creation of the heavens and the earth is greater than the creation of man; but most
people not know.
[Qur'an 40:57]".
In building the environment, we should implement the Islamic value in it so we dont forget the one
who has the most power, Allah. He is capable to do anything rather than us.
3
"Consider the water which you drink. Was it you that brought it down from the rain cloud or We? If
We had pleased, We could make it bitter"
[Qur'an 56:68-70].
Saving water and safeguarding its purity were two important issues. Even the prophet himself also
concern about the sustainable use of water led to the creation of haram zones in the vicinity of water
sources.
4
And the earth, He has set it for people.
(55:10)
God has created the earth such that that man can dominate and benefit from them. The Qur'an
explains that mankind holds a privileged position among God's creations on earth: he is chosen as
khalifa, "vice-regent" and carries the responsibility of caring for God's earthly creations.
5
He is the one who created you from the earth and settled you upon it so that you might cultivate it
and construct towns.
(11:61)
Behave towards nature as a guardian. Man must use the natural resources with care and he must feel
responsible for their maintenance and improvement of their condition. Failure to observe divine
pleasure and carry out his responsibilities towards himself and the world certainly leads to mans
dissatisfaction as well as the destruction of the world.
