Volleyball serves as bond between athletes

Special Olympics
team practices
with Neumann
University
By JULIE SHANNON
The Sun
When the Neumann University
girls volleyball team walked into
the Copley Hall gymnasium on
Bancrofts campus, it had no idea
it would have similarities with
the Special Olympics volleyball
team. Both teams names are the
Knights and both teams color is
yellow. They bonded right away
over the resemblances and because of everyones love for volleyball.
The Special Olympics volleyball team consists of athletes of
all ages with intellectual disabilities from South Jersey. It practices every Tuesday night at Bancroft in Haddonfield, and on Dec.
6, the Neumann University girls
volleyball team practiced with it.
Jeanne Bozicek, life enrichment manager at Bancroft, coordinates
the

Special
Olympics at Bancroft.
We try to do unified teams as
much as possible, where people
with disabilities play on the same
team with people without disabilities, and so we believe if we play
together, we will also work togeth-

er and live together, she said.
Some of the members are Bancroft residents and others are
from the community who have
disabilities and dont receive
services from Bancroft.
They are part of the community, and our residents are having
even more friendships and rela-

tionships, Bozicek explained.

Relationships formed between
the two teams as they practiced
serves, how to handle the ball and
how to block the ball.
Im learning everything from
them, said Kevin Angelley of
Magnolia. An overhead serve I
didnt know how to do that until

tonight.
I love my teammates and having fun, said Michelle VanBoerum of Voorhees. Im learning we work as a team.
Michele Asher of Sicklerville
was happy everyone was there to
do the same thing and have a good
time, which is what the entire

night was primarily about.

I think this is an awesome experience, she said. Its great to
work with other people that actually want to do the same thing as
you play volleyball. The girls at
Neumann are really awesome
and very inspiring.
The members of the Special
Olympics team were inspiring
the Neumann girls as well.
This gets everyone involved
and moving, freshman Carlee
Herrin said. Its awesome and so
much fun.
This is awesome just to incorporate our love of the game with
them, senior Nicole Collevechio
said. Its a lot of fun and a great
learning experience.
Special Olympics coach Rachel
Farreny could tell right away it
meant a lot to her players to play
side by side with collegiate athletes.
The social aspect was great
for them and you could see in
their faces just how much fun
they were actually having, and
when it comes to sports and competition, thats what matters the
most, she said.
Neumann
girls
volleyball
coach Alicia MacGlaughlin said
the practice brought a different
light on the game for everyone
involved.
I think for the coaches and for
the players, it brings a different

The Sun
The Boxwood Arts Committees proposal to preserve the
building for public and educational use as a theater and cultural
center has been met with some
opposition.
Katherine Mansfield Tassini,
an official borough historian,
said though the committee plans
to preserve much of the building,
she believes historical integrity
of the property would be jeopardized, and felt disheartened by the
plans.
I strongly believe that the
house and its setting need to be
preserved as they now exist. A
great deal of time, money and volunteer hours and efforts have
gone into the various ordinances
that protect this property, and it
will all be for nothing if the town,
its government and its boards fail
to once again take a stand to protect this important historic site,
Tassini said.
The house at 65 Haddon Ave. is

one of the few remaining 18th

century dwellings still standing
in Haddonfield. Its structure exists with very few alterations to
its original design, as envisioned
by its builder, John Estaugh Hopkins, grand-nephew and primary
heir of Elizabeth Haddon Estaugh, the founder of Haddonfield.
John built the house in 1799
when he turned over the New
Haddonfield mansion to his eldest son, James, and built a home
that would be closer to town for
himself, his wife and two unmarried daughters.
John died in 1806. The house
continued to be used as a residence that descended through the
female line of the family until
about 1965 when it was sold out of
the family and was used as a professional office for more than 20
years.
The house is one of nine in
Haddonfield that are part of the
Historic American Buildings Survey. It has been the subject of numerous family histories, includ-

ing a pamphlet published by the

Historical Society of Haddonfield
called Boyhood Memories of
Boxwood Hall written by
Samuel Nicholson Rhoads, who
became a famous naturalist of
the late 19th and early 20th century. In his detailed recollections, he
emphasizes the diversity of trees,
flowers, insects, mammals and
birds he began to study while
playing in his grandfather
Nicholsons back yard and led
him to become an important naturalist.
Samuel N. Rhoads ended his
reminiscences of Boxwood Hall
with the following statement of
hope. And thus endeth my
Reminiscences of Boxwood Hall,
its endeared people and its spacious and historic grounds. Let us
hope they long may endure,
Tassini quoted.
Tassini said Boxwood Hall is
significant for a number of reasons. It is historically significant
for its direct connection to the

THE HADDONFIELD SUN DEC. 14-20, 2016

in our opinion

The future is bright for business

Survey respondents feel 2017 will be a good year for them
eres a piece of news you
might not have heard in
awhile in New Jersey: Small
business owners are excited about the
future.
The New Jersey Business and Industry Association recently released
its 58th annual Business Outlook Survey, and the overall forecast is quite
encouraging.
According to the survey, 29 percent
of business owners said they would increase employment in 2017, compared
to 9 percent that said they would decrease a strong net-positive of 20
percent, the associations president,
Michele Siekerka, said.
Of the 1,046 responses most of
whom were small business owners

Your thoughts
What are your thoughts on the state of
doing business and working in New Jersey,
and what role our new governor should
play? Share your thoughts through a letter to the editor.

61 percent said they would give wage

increases between 1 percent and 4.9
percent, and another 8 percent said
they would give wage increases above
that range.
The concerns among the small business owners arent shocking: They
worry about the cost of health care,
property taxes and the general cost of
doing business in New Jersey, along
with the potential bump to a $15 minimum wage.

These are all topics that our new

governor whomever it may be will
have to attack head on.
Democratic Assemblyman John
Wisniewski and fellow Democrat Phil
Murphy have already announced they
will run for governor, as has Republican Assemblyman Jack Ciattarelli.
Assembly Minority Leader Jon Bramnick and Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno, both
Republicans, are also expected to
throw their hats into the ring for the
states top governmental position.
Its just a shame he or she wont be
able to start the job until 2018, after
next years highly-anticipated gubernatorial election to replace our historically-disliked current governor, Chris
Christie.

letters to the editor

Writer unhappy with boroughs
holiday tree label
Im writing to express my agreement
for altogether different reasons with the
letter writer who was unhappy with use of
the term holiday tree to describe the
Christmas tree outside the public library.
The tree is as much a holiday tree as
Santa is a holiday gift man or the menorah is a holiday candleholder.
Jews, Muslims and other non-Christians do not decorate trees, do not hang
wreaths and are not visited by Santa Claus.
Pretending that these are secular symbols
doesnt magically make them so. And it
doesnt somehow make it OK to display
them in places where, if they were
straightforwardly called Christmas decorations, they might be questioned.
I love looking at Christmas lights on my
neighbors houses, and delight in sharing
Christmas traditions with Christian
friends in their homes.

But Christmas displays (or Hanukkah

displays or any other displays of a particular faith) in public places are problematic.
The tree at the library and the wreaths
hung on the high school seem to divide us
rather than bring us together, implying
there are certain right holidays to celebrate as a community.
Calling these decorations holiday decorations doesnt change that, and actually
makes it worse it suggests there is one
universal holiday that everyone celebrates
with decorated trees and wreaths, and
makes those of us who dont participate in
these holiday traditions feel even less a
part of our community.
In this new world where hate and divisiveness are on the rise, it seems to me that
our job is to make everyone feel welcome in
our town and nation, rather than characterizing the rituals of any one particular
faith as appropriate holiday customs for
all.
Im not nave enough to think that
Christmas decorations are going to disap-

pear from public places anytime soon.

But as long as they remain, Id rather
they be called exactly what they are
Christmas decorations.
Adena Adler

There is a valid reason for

using the term holiday tree
Contrary to John W. Petrozzi's thinking,
there is a quite valid reason for using the
term "holiday tree" to describe this beautiful object on public property.
Some of us do not believe in the Christmas holiday, either because we subscribe to
another religion or none at all.
Thus the term Christmas tree is exclusionary, a barrier to our enjoying this festive site. Rather than being a manifestation
of effete political correctness, as Mr.
Petrozzi posits, calling it a holiday tree is
an exercise of something else: tolerance.
I wish Mr. Petrozzi would learn that
word.

OVER THE NEXT SEVERAL MONTHS!
Residents in Haddonfield count on us to provide safe, reliable water and wastewater service.
By constantly upgrading our infrastructure, were planning to keep it that way. Think of it as
your water bill at work right in your own neighborhood.
New Jersey American Water is constructing three new sewer lift stations on Atlantic Avenue,
Coles Mill Road and Roberts Avenue. The company is also replacing the existing water and sewer
utilities around the work sites.
These improvements are a part of New Jersey American Waters five-year plan to invest in
system modernization within the Borough of Haddonfield.

Haddonfield residents,
visitors share holiday traditions
By EMILY KEIFLINE
The Sun
The holiday season is in full

swing in Haddonfield, and families are starting to get ready for

their holiday traditions. From
opening presents on Christmas
Eve to wearing matching pajamas, every family does something
a little bit different.
Hank and Catchy Schmitz, who
live in Connecticut but have family in Haddonfield, have been making eggs benedict every Christmas morning for more than 30
years. Their extended family
comes and forms an assembly
line to feed approximately 25 people. While Hank says its hard to
pull off, they always make it happen.
The Schmitzes also buy stockings for their four children and
their spouses as well as their 13
grandchildren. The Schmitzes recently welcomed a set of newborn twins to the family.

Even our grown kids who are

in their 40s now still get a stocking, Hank said. They dont
want to give their stockings up.
Resident Gary Spatola does his
best to give back around the holiday season, starting at Thanksgiving. Volunteering has been a
holiday tradition of his for almost
10 years, and he says the spirit of
giving keeps him coming back.
[Giving] is important any day,
not just at the holidays but especially then, Spatola said. Any
time that theres anyone in need, I
try to do what I can or involve others. Every day is a time to help
the less fortunate and those who
are struggling.
Gail and Bob Eastwick, who
live in Cherry Hill but grew up in
Haddonfield, enjoy going to the

OBITUARIES
Continued from page 2
After working at General Motors,
Continental Can Co. and Abbotts
Dairies, he dedicated the next 34
years of his career to teaching in
the Philadelphia public schools.
He made a difference. Always
drawn to mechanical things,
Steve was never without multiple
building projects at home. He
could fix almost anything. Eventually, he discovered the joys of
using a lathe, and in his retirement, he became a respected
woodturning artist, specializing
in big, beautifully-crafted bowls.
He was a leading member of the
DelVal Woodturners Club. At
Grace Church, he served at vari-

ous times on the Vestry, as warden, as property chairman and as

leader of the Youth Group. Steve
also loved boating, fishing, camping, reading historical fiction and
non-fiction, and travel. His life
was filled with music of all kinds.
Singing tenor with the Grace
Church choir and also with the
New Jersey Master Chorale was a
reliable source of pleasure, rivaled only by time spent with his
many friends and loving family.
We will truly miss this uncommonly good man, his sense of fun,
his willingness to help others, his
strong work ethic, his unflagging
courage, his core decency. What a
blessing he was to us all.
Services were held on Saturday, Dec. 10, at Grace Episcopal
Church, 19 Kings Highway, in
Haddonfield. Memorial contribu-

tions in honor of Stephen may be

made to the Grace Church Music
Fund at the above address or to
the Melanoma Excellence Fund at
the Abramson Cancer Center,
3535 Market St., Suite 750,
Philadelphia, PA 19104.

Committee envisions gallery space

COMMITTEE

founders of the town and subsequent generations of the family
who lived there and gave generously to the community over the
centuries; it is architecturally significant for its simplicity of
Quaker design and construction;
it is important to the Historic District and the Master Plan
for the park-like setting that has
always surrounded it since its
construction in 1799; and it is scientifically and educationally significant for the importance the
gardens played in the early education in the natural sciences of
Rhoads.
In 2014, the borough purchased
the 18th-century house along with
a 20th-century house and 1.4 surrounding acres for $1.8 million to
settle a developers lawsuit, which
sought to build an apartment

complex on the property. The

house and its surrounding lot in
its entirety were carefully included in the Historic District as a
contributing property, worthy
of the highest level of protection.
According to the Haddonfield
Historic
District
ordinance,
Every reasonable effort shall be
made to provide a compatible use
for a property which requires
minimal alteration of the building, structure or site and its environment or to use a property for
its originally intended purpose.
It further states, The distinguishing original qualities or
character of a building, structure
or site and its environment shall
not be destroyed.
The Boxwood Arts committee
envisions the heritage-protected
building would become gallery
space for the Markeim Arts Center. A 365-seat theater to be built
behind the house and a multi-purpose space below the theater
would include a competition-

quality ballroom/dance floor for

Dance Haddonfield. A glasswalled lobby between the art
gallery and theater is planned to
connect the two buildings. The
woods at the rear of the property
would be preserved and made accessible to the public for cultural
and educational purposes.
If the Boxwood Arts Committee plans to go forward with its
development plans, the group has
a few things it must do first. The
property is zoned R2 with an R0
overlay, a single-family residence
with office district overlay, so an
arts center is not a complying
use. It would have to go through
the various boards of the borough, such as the Historic Preservation Committee, the Zoning
Board and the Planning Board, as
well as allowing time for public
comment.
To learn more about Boxwood
Hall and the property visit, the
Historical Society of Haddonfield
website at haddonfieldhistory.org.

Haddonfield Madrigal Singers 2016 Dessert Theatre

The Haddonfield Memorial
High School Madrigal Singers invite you to enjoy the music and
merriment of the season at its annual Dessert Theatre.
On Dec. 16 and 17, the HMHS
Madrigal Singers will entertain
at the Royal Court in the theater
of the Grace Church, 19 Kings
Highway East in Haddonfield.
The show will feature songs and
dances of the season, a comedy
guaranteed to amuse and entertain, a wassail toast, the regal
presentation of the Boars Head,
and an elegant coffee and dessert
buffet.
Under the direction of Haddonfield Memorial High Schools
choir director,
Tyler
Mills, the
singers
appear in
magnificent period costumes as
they present madrigal songs,
pieces of vocal music that originated in France and England in
the early 16th century.
