OBSERVATION OF ATMOSPHERIC VARIABLES. UNIT 4

(It can be done individually or in pairs).
1. TASK goals:
Write a report about Madrids weather during 7 days. You have to finish your report with a conclusion
that answers the question: How was the weather like during the seven days you observed?, along with
the observation table and the following activities.
2. Instructions:
2.1. Observation table: It has to be landscape, like the model, and it has to contain the following
information: maximum temperature, minimum temperature, average daily temperature; precipitation
(yes/no), quantity of precipitation (litres/m2 or mm); pressure (maximum and minimum); cloudiness
(clear sky, cloudy, partly cloudy, variable); wind (yes/no; direction; strength); other data (WATCH
MODEL).
You have to complete the table during the 7 days based on your own observations and the information
you can find from the following links:
*Estacin Meteorolgica Comunidad de Madrid (http://www.meteoclimatic.net/mapinfo/ESMAD)
*AEMET (Agencia Espaola de Meteorologa).
http://www.aemet.es/es/eltiempo/observacion/ultimosdatos?k=mad&w=0
*"The Weather" section of some newspapers (El Pas, El Mundo, ABC)
*Eltiempo.es
2.2. Make a linear graph of the maximum and minimum temperatures of the seven days, with the days
on the horizontal axis and the temperatures on the vertical axis. If precipitation is relevant, you have to
make a bar graph about precipitation, with the days on the horizontal axis and precipitation on the
vertical axis. Calculate the total precipitation in 7 days (If there is no precipitation you dont need to do
this graph).
EXAMPLES OF GRAPHS:

2.3. Final report

Resume the evolution of the different variables of the table, explaining how was the weather like in
Madrid during those 7 days. You have to comment on:
*Temperatures (maximum, minimum, average Were they normal for that time of the year? Were
they higher or lower?...
*Precipitation (days of rain, quantity of precipitation, was it normal for that time of the year?)
*Pressure: is there a coincidence between low pressure and cloudy/rainy days? And between high
pressure and clear days?
*Wind: Were there strong wind days? When were there strong winds? What was the main wind
direction? Is there any relation with any other phenomena?
*Other considerations.
Indicate the origin of the information you have used (websites, newspapers, direct observation).
