The Internet
Anyone using computer for school, business or personal use knows the difficulty of
keeping up with changing technology. Computer users are demanding that microprocessors
become faster and easier to use in order to keep up with the many applications used today. Just
when users thought they were catching up, the internet became popular.
Defining the internet
Networks have changes the way people communicate. Each day, transactions are sent
across high-speed connections to computer all over the world cia the Internet. A working
definition of the Internet follows:
The internet is na international network of networks comprised of government,
academic, and business-related networks that allow people at diverse locations around the
world to communicate through electronic mail, to transfer files back and forth, and to log
on to remote computer facilities. (Odgers and Keeling 289)
Connecting to the Internet
You must have a device called a modem to link your computer to other computers
through telephone or cable line (Fulton-Calkins and Stulz 181). With some connections, you

need to have an account name and password to access the internet; with other, you may be
connected directly to the internet and need only to click the internet icon on your computers
desktop.
If you are using the internet at your school or work, the organization is paying a for doing
so, if you want to access the internet on your home computer, you will need to subscribe to a
commercial internet service provider (often referred to as an ISP). Most of these providers charge
a monthly fee.
Using the Internet
One you have access to the Internet, you will find many uses for it (Oliverio, Pasewark,
and White 89). You will want to establish an e-mail accoiunt so you can send electronic
messages to your friends and relatives who are also connected to the internet. You can also use email to send word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation files, including pictures, to
others.
In addition to e-mail, the internet has many other useful applications. Common uses
include:

Retrieving information by using search engines or directories that enable you to search

massive databases.
Using bulletin boards to read and post messages related to topics of interest to you and

others.
Designing and posting a webpage to provide to other internet users information about
yourself, your family, a club or organization, or a business.
