Chapter 3 Assignment: How did you react to Brians thoughts and actions? Do you think that
he is sensible or unreasonable? Explain your answer.
I think he was sensible because from the second paragraph. The plane went into a glide a very
fast glide that ate altitude, and suddenly there weren't any lakes. All hed seen since they started
flying over the forests lakes and now they were gone. Gone. Out in front far away at the horizon,
he could see lots of them, glittering blue in the late afternoon sun But he needed one right in
front.
Chapter 4 Assignment: Write 5 similes about Brians current state and explain their meaning.
Use a Google Table to do this.
Similes

Meanings

Brian felt hatred like an angry swarm of bees

Im trying to compare it when he had a

flashback about when he found out about the
secret

Brians head hurt like a hammer banging on a

nail

Im trying to compare when Brians head hurt

really bad

Brian slept like a hibernating bear in the

middle of the winter

Im comparing it to when Brian was so tired

after the crash

The memory of his mom kissing the guy is as

painful as the crash injuries

The memory was very upsetting

Wet soft sand felt like a cloud

The wet soft sand is well soft.

Chapter 5 Assignment:Positive Thinking

I think staying positive keeps you from losing hope when you're in a bad solution.
When Brian in the book hatchet found out that he would not be rescued for a while he did not
lose hope and started to plan what he would do if he wasn't rescued in four days .
You can apply it in your own life for example let's say you're studying for a test in on a subject
you're not good at if you stay positive you will probably do good, another example is let's say
you want to get good at a sport or instrument if you stay positive and try try again you will
become good.
Chapter 6 Assignment: Pick an example of a flashback in the chapter, summarize it, and
explain how it helps/hurts Brian emotionally.
The flashback of last thanksgiving hurt Brian emotionally. It hurt him one way because the
memory was the last time the family was whole before the divorce. It hurt him another way by
thinking of food made him more hungry. It also made him another way was because if his
mother hadnt forced the divorce he wouldn't be in this situation.
Chapter 7 Assignment:Create a bubble map with 6 external bubbles. In the center, write
conflicts. Identify and describe 6 different conflicts youve seen in the book.

Chapter 8 Assignment:Retell a time when you had a dream that ended up being more of a
message to you
I had a dream where I failed a test and the teacher pressed a big red button on her desk and a
trap door opened beneath me with lava in it. Also the teacher that pressed the button was some
random person she was fat she wore a pink dress and screamed like a ape. So I guess the
message was I will not be able to succeed at everything in life and that people's imaginations
are completely random sometimes. I think I had this dream because I had a test coming up and
I was stressed. Or I had this dream because I was acing tests and then the dream came to
show that if i fail it isnt the end of my life. I had this dream somewhere in 9-?-15.
Chapter 9 Assignment:Create a chart of objects that would be useful to create a fire and not
useful. Explain each
dried grass

Because it will catch the sparks and go on

fire.
dead sticks

To maintain the structure of the fire.

Birch bark

Because it will easily go on fire.

Flint + steel

So you can make sparks.

Bigger dead sticks

To make the fire stay.

What not to use

Any wet kindling or live kindling

Because it will not catch on fire and or will but

it out.

Chapter 10 Assignment: C
reate a table that lists at least two moods presented in the text and
give cited examples of each.
Moods
Examples
Organized

He was organized because when he woke up that morning he

thought of what he needs to do for the day

Positive

He was positive because he had a fire that would protect him,

keep him warm, and send a smoke signal. Also he had food and
got rid of the mosquitoes

Curious

He was curious because he wondered what the animal did last

night with the pile of sand and if he could eat the yolk inside of
the eggs raw.

Chapter 11 Assignment:Put yourself in a catastrophic situation. How would it change you?

Im in Jurassic park when it's destroyed and the dinosaurs are loose and about on the island.
I'm in the middle of the island with a bow and a quiver full of arrows with a pocket knife also with
flint and steel.I found a radio and they said they will come in 10 days to save me because the
island location has been lost so I have to survive for 10 days without getting eaten.
I would change because I have to be more aware of my surroundings or else I will not survive.
Also it would change me because i will be more tougher so something like falling of the monkey
bars would not hurt as much. It would change me about me trying new food because in a
situation like this it's eat or be eaten. It would change me becuase ill become more responsible
because i will need to hunt, clean out the bones, cook diner, and be tidy.
Chapter 12 Assignment:Suppose that Brian has a pencil. To help sort out his feelings about
his parents, he writes to one of them on a piece of birch bark. W
rite the letter that Brian might
write to his mother or his father. Keep in mind the issues and the details that are revealed in the
novel. Remember, too, that for certain reasons, Brian does not want to tell his father the Secret.

Dear mom,
I think you forcing the divorce to hang out with some blond hair jock and not telling
dad is popustoruse! Also the hatchet you gave me is helping me out I can make fire and
tools like spears. Don't worry i'm not starving out here I found a raspberry bush so i can
eat them also i have a small stock of eggs and soon i will have fish as long as i can make
a bow with arrows. I have a good shelter with walls and a door. I miss you dad and Terry.
From your lost son,
Brian
Chapter 13 Assignment: Make a symbol for this chapter
I put in this caption to show Bian hunting with other animals

Chapter 14 Assignment:Create a new invention that could help Brian survive in the wilderness.
The Survival Knife! The Survival Knife is like a pocket knife but better. It has all you need
to survive in the wild. It has a knife, fishing pole with bait, a rifle with ammo, a lighter, a
steel prong to cook stuff, bacon, eggs, etc.
It will help Brian by letting him be able to fish in deeper waters. It will help Brian by
getting a fire started easier. It will help him then he can hunt moose and deer. It will help
him so if he cannot find food he can have bacon and eggs. It will give him a
better way to cook. By now you can guess that it can help him in any way.

Way it can help

If you cant find food it has it
You can fish + hunt

You can start a fire easy

You can cook food
It includes bunker with a mattress and blanket
Etc

Chapter 15 Assignment:Create a chart that shows Brians changing emotions in this chapter
and the text support to justify your answer.
emotions

Text evidence

Frustrated

I think that because he could never hit a

foolbird and they would scare him. Page
139 from the top of the page to the second
to last sentence

Happy

I think that because he finally was able to

eat meat.To support it page 145-146
never in all the food all the hamburgers
amd malts all the fries or meals never
inall the roasts or the candy, pies, cakes
or steaks or pizza/ never in all the
submarine sandwiches never never never
as good as that first bite.

Chapter 16 Assignment:Create a chart that shows Brians changing emotions in this chapter
and the text support to justify your answer.
Emotions

Text support

Neutral

I say that because he doesn't really show any

emotion. To support my answer read pages
147-160.

Pain

I say that because he feels pain physically.

In the text it says that the moose hurt him in
the ribs badly.

Chapter 17 Assignment:Make a pro/con chart about Brian getting into the airplane wreckage.
Then, write a summary paragraph of this information. Please use in text citations.
Pros +

Cons -

Might get survival pack

Might get trapped

Materials + food

He might DIE

Might get a rifle and be able to hunt bigger

prey

Waste of energy
He could lose his hatchet

Gps

Might get hurt

A radio to contact help

He might miss a search plane

I think that if the survival pack is there it may be a waste of energy or get hurt he would
be able to survive better so then he can hunt with ease. Get more fish for easy meals.
He might even be able to radio for help or send a distress signal. But if that cant happen
then he might survive all through fall + winter to the spring. Also I think Brian will
become more stronger if he does search the wreck. Also Brian can get into the plane the
way he escaped it in the crash. Also Brian will be able to get the pack back easily
because it will be a backpack so he can wear it like one and swim to shore.
Chapter 18 & 19 Assignment:Create a chart in for possible themes and cited reasons for each
them. You must use at least 3.
Survival

Hard work

Man Vs Nature

This is important because

the main theme is him
surviving in the woods by
himself for 3 months. He
has hunt fish, rabbits, and
foolbird.

Hard work is important to

Survive he made a shelter
and fire by himself and
made tools with his
surroundings and what he
has.

This is also important

because he is surviving in
the woods.He also has
survived Porcupine attack
and skunk attack. He also
survived a tornado.
