Pet Photos with Santa fundraiser on November 19 was

a great success raising $601 for the Nelson SPCA! DIG
Garden Centre hosted the event and the West Kootenay
Kennel Club donated the printed 8x10 photos.
While Santa posed with many a pet, the members served
coffee, hot chocolate and baked treats. Dig Garden Centre
loves animals and since opening the store five years ago,
they have supported the Nelson SPCA with a donation
every month based on a percentage of sales from the pet
department from the store. Why not adopt or foster a pet?

Students taking the Transitional Training program put

together eight holiday hampers.
Students Spread Holiday Cheer
Students taking the Transitional Training Program at Selkirk Colleges Silver King Campus in Nelson raised money
through hard work, determination and goodwill to purchase eight holiday hampers benefiting hungry students.
This really highlights their generosity and social consciousness, says instructor Alison Roy. They chose to spend
this money on others instead of using it to benefit them.
Transitional Training (also called Adult Special Education) prepares adults with special needs or disabilities to participate more fully in daily life within their
communities by nurturing independence and building
personal strength. For many years, Transitional Training students have been sharing funds raised through
weekly popcorn sales with their fellow students who go
hungry. Sales so successful, students decided to expand
the reach of their kindness. People are starving out
there and we need to support them the best we can,
says student Nick Toner.
For Thanksgiving, students used funds to purchase supplies for six hampers going to students in need. And they
had money left over. Motivated to continue giving, they
held a Halloween bake sale and also used money from
collecting refundable bottles on the Silver King Campus.
Were going to touch someones heart for Christmas
thats for sure, says student Dawn Compagna as she
loaded fruit into the eight hampers ready for delivery to
Selkirk College students in need.
Students were hands-on through the entire process which
provided learning opportunities along the way. They created
a feedback form to give to students receiving Thanksgiving
hampers and made adjustments in their shopping lists. They
set fundraising targets and budgeted money raised. They
baked and made soup mixes while meal planning to ensure
that each hamper contained balanced meal options.
Roy explains that students of all abilities found ways
to contribute and gain knowledge. We were able to
work on those skills that transfer into independent living skills, she says.

in Nelson, Castlegar, Grand Forks and Trail. You can find

Capitol Theatres Family Series

For Our Youngest Audience
Families love the Capitol Family Series and for good

reason. The annual children centred series is as varied
and unique as it is fun, opening the world of live performing arts theatre to Nelsons younger set.
Mr. Fishs Phenomenal Physics on Sunday, January 22
will show us how science can be interesting, fun and
something every child can do. Learn how to make and
throw your own boomerang and hear a whip creating
sonic booms. This is a lively and entertaining show for
all ages.
DuffleBag Theatre is back with Peter Pan and his faithful friend Tinkerbell who guides siblings Wendy, John
and Michael through great adventures in Never-Never
Land. The Nearly World Famous DuffleBag Theatre has
been performing since 1992 starting at the London International Childrens Festival, in London, ON. Now based
in Toronto, DuffleBag performs over 600 shows a year,
across Canada, the US and internationally. Their shows
are performed with a great sense of fun, innovation and
participation that audiences (nearly) the world over have
come to expect!
No need to wait until high school to develop a love of
Shakespeare! The award winning storytelling masters at
Monster Theatre use improvisation and the audiences
imaginations to recreate Shakespeares A Midsummer
Nights Dream! In this version William Shakespeare acts
as a Puck-like emcee, enlisting the help of audience volunteers to help him tell the story. By the end well all feel
like we came up with the plot twists, the characters, the
comedy and along the way we will learn about the elements of story, the incredible variety of power of the English language and be exposed to the wonder of William
Shakespeare!
All Capitol Family Series performances are Sundays at
2 pm and tickets are $12.50 or $10 if you purchase all four
