Message from the Superintendent

As we wrap up the first semester of our school year, there are several topics
that I would like to write about.
First, I would like to thank the Fostoria community for once again
supporting the schools and the renewal levy that was on the ballot last month.
Those funds are so vital to us maintaining the programs that we are offering in
the district. Our students truly stand to benefit and they are our future, which is
worth all the investment we make.
The building project continues to move along. At this point we are having
an organization meeting in January, which will really jump start the design
portion of the project. This is going to happen in several phases. Right now
we have been working with the teaching staff on instructional delivery and
functionality of the new classrooms. After we get this accomplished, we will
be able to involve more people to discuss other aspect of design. It is very
exciting to be at this point in the project. Keep an eye out for construction
activity on campus in the coming months, as there will be some preliminary
work done as we are going through the design process.
Another project that we will be working on in the second half of the school
year will be the selection of new social studies materials. This will continue the
process that we began three years ago with overhauling our curriculum in the
district.
In conclusion, I hope that you all are able to enjoy this holiday season. I
look forward to the many exciting accomplishments that the district will have
in 2017.

Intermediate School Earns Momentum Award

This past month the district and the staff at Fostoria Intermediate School were
notified that the Intermediate building was the recipient of the 2016 Momentum
Award. This award is for scoring all As in the Progress (Value-Added) component
of the most recent state report card. To earn an A students are demonstrating more
than one years worth of growth, or progress, in one school year. The areas that are
looked at for this award are performance on Reading and Math tests. In the letter
announcing the award from the State Board of Education the building was credited
with demonstrating that all students, no matter their background or ability level, can
achieve. We are proud of all of the hard work and we will do everything possible to
build upon this success. This is quite an accomplishment for our students as well as
the teachers who work with them on a daily basis.

To Close or Not to Close ---That is the question

watching the temperature. When
determining whether to close or not,

our cutoff for temperature is - if it

is -10 wind chill, school will not
be in session. Please keep in mind
there are certain timelines in which
these decisions need to be made. We
cannot control changes or variances
in the weather conditions after we
have made the call, but we will do our
best to make sure we make decisions
that protect our children. Delays
and closings are announced through
our all-call School Announcement
system, posted on the district website
and Facebook pages, on FETV
Channel 10, and on all of the local
news stations. Hopefully, old man
winter will be kind this year and we
will not have too many days to worry
about delaying or closing.

Reading is the Key

Everything that we do in school
and in our lives revolves around
our ability to read. This is why we
need to start early with our children
learning to

InfoOhio
recently
published
some
information, primarily focusing on
students in pre-school through third
grade and skills that they should be
working on and things that you can
do with your child at home. With
the Third Grade Guarantee, it is
important that we have students on
track with their reading levels by
the end of the third grade. Much
like learning to ride a bike, play an
instrument or a sport, reading is a
skill that needs repeated practice.
Research shows that students who
are on grade level have a higher
percentage chance of graduating
on time from high school as well
as performing better on other
subjects standardized testing.
These newsletters can be found by
going to https://www.infohio.org/

or visiting each elementary school

home page on the district website,

www.fostoriaschools.org.
I encourage everyone to take a
moment to read these and see
how we can make reading a part
of many activities that we do on a
daily basis and show our children
that it is a fun and rewarding skill
to have.

As we complete the second
quarter of this year, celebrating
success is our main goal. Students

Lunch Leaders:
One Thursday a month, parents
are invited to eat lunch with their
child. The community engagement
team realized there are quite a few
students who dont have guests

they want to go, academically.

Every Wednesday, we celebrate
our Wildly Important Goals at our
morning meeting. Mrs. Bauman,
the principal, even wears a silly
wig for fun. Students who have met
their yearly goals already receive a
crown in kindergarten and medal
in preschool. Students are asked to

talk about their success and what

they have done to get there.
We have also added a new
feature by the office to celebrate
success. Every time the bell rings,
a student has met their goal. This
is a short-easy way for students to
recognize their success and feel the
positivity of meeting a goal.

come for lunch. This year, the team

has made it their mission to bring
community members more connected
to the students at Longfellow. In
November, student-athletes from
FJSHS were invited to sit and eat

with those students who dont have

a guest. Next month, residents from
Good Shepherd Nursing Home will
join us for lunch.

Mini-Leadership Day:
Recently, parents had the
opportunity to join morning meeting,
hear from our student leadership
teams and visit their childs
classroom. The purpose for this visit
was to allow parents to see what the
7 Habits looks like at Longfellow.
It was a way to engage parents in

a mid-year check of our progress

as a year 2 Leader in Me school.
Parents were also taught ways to use
the habits at home and sign up for
Family training. On May 11th, 2017,
a full leadership day celebration will
take place for parents and guests.

A Message from Mrs. Bernal
Its amazing we are almost ready to move into 2017 and starting the second
semester. It seems as if the school year just started not that long ago. I hope
everyone finds the time to enjoy some much needed time with families. As we
enter into 2017, I hope it finds you healthy, happy and ready to begin the second
part of the school year.
Before we move into break, teachers will be completing winter benchmark
assessments with students. Students will be assessed in the following areas
using the following assessments:
Reading- Fountas and Pinnell (F&Ps), NWEA MAP Reading Test
Math- Math Diagnostic, NWEA MAP Math test
The data gathered from the assessments will be used to help drive instruction
in the classroom, as well as interventions and enrichments during small group
instruction. Students F&P levels will be on the grade card that will be coming
home the first week in January. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to
contact your childs teacher.
I look forward to seeing everyone after break. As always, please do not
hesitate to contact the school if you have any questions.

Junior Achievement Day at

Riley School
Riley students had the opportunity
to learn about Career Development,
Entrepreneurship, and Financial
Literacy principles during our Junior
Achievement Day. Each classroom
had a volunteer from Huntington
Bank come into their classroom
and complete activities based on
the principles. Students loved the
activities and the volunteers enjoyed
working with all of the students!

A Note of Thanks from the School Counselor

Thank you students and parents for your generous donations during our food
drive. We were able to make 50 food baskets to give to students and their families
in November and again in December. Thank you also to the community members
who have donated toys, clothes, shoes, coats, and hats to our students during this
holiday season. Finally, thanks to those who have given money to help pay for
Campus Wear for students, turkeys for families at Thanksgiving, and hams for
families at Christmas. We are truly grateful.

Title I News
This year Riley Elementary
Title I Night featured activities
based on books written by Jan
Brett. Our feature stories were
Christmas Trolls, The Mitten
and The Gingerbread Baby. In
the gym, the families listened
to The Gingerbread Baby
while making gingerbread
baby cookies and decorating
them with icing and treats.
In the library, we listened to
Christmas Trolls and picked
their own Christmas Troll
name. The families decorated

a hedgehog and a present. We

talked about why the hedgehog
was taking the gifts and the true
meaning of Christmas. In the
classroom, they read The Mitten
and sequenced the animals that
came into the Mitten. Then the
families decorated a mitten of
their own. Following our Title
I Night the students turned in
their Jan Brett station cards for
a drawing to win a Jan Brett
book. Thank you to all who
came to our family night! We
look forward to seeing you in
the spring!

Student Action Teams

In
October,
we
started
implementing our Student Action
Teams. Student Action Teams focus
on integrating the 7 Habits through
working together and making
decisions about how to better Riley.
This allows every student to develop
a voice and contribute in the
decision making process. Beginning
with the End in Mind, learning to
work together and develop ideas for a
common purpose, is a very important
skill that is used in our daily life and
workforce. Student Action Teams
meet every week for an hour. Riley
staff are truly amazed at the ideas the
students come up with and the students
love meeting with their group.

Fostoria Intermediate Elementary School

Tera Matz
Principal
From the Desk of Mrs. Matz
It is hard to believe that December is upon us! In the hustle and bustle of the
holiday season, we often seem to lose sight of what is most important to us all
of the special people in our lives. I would like to take a moment to thank each and
every one of you for your ongoing support of Fostoria City Schools. Whether you
are a parent, grandparent, school volunteer, or simply a supportive community
member, your support does not go unnoticed. I am humbled and grateful for the
privilege of spending my days with the students and staff of Fostoria Schools.
This is the time of year where friends and family gather to celebrate and to share.
Our school seems to be in this very same spirit of celebrating as staff, parents, and
community members have shared in the successes of students through a variety
of events within school. Whether it was visits from our Fostoria Fire Department
and student leaders from FJSHS during our Leadership Lunches, several
guests visiting our classrooms, Veterans Day Breakfast, 5/6 Band Concert, the
School-Wide Spelling Bee or the Third Grade Christmas Programfamily and
community involvement has simply been extraordinary. The enthusiasm of staff
and parents to participate in these school events truly make a positive difference in
the lives of our FIES students.
As I look at these past events as well as the events on the calendar that await
us, it is easy to realize that the essential pieces of our school are in place: caring
families and community, a dedicated staff, and an enthusiastic student body eager
and willing to learn. These three elements working together truly give the school
the best opportunity to succeed.
As always, I am blessed with the opportunity to serve the students of Fostoria
Intermediate Elementary.

Congratulations to the winners of the

2016-2017 Spelling Bee!

Franciscan Earth Literacy Center

On November 28-30, the third
grade and multi-age classes went to
the Franciscan Earth Literacy Center
to learn about sources of energy. While
there, the students learned the difference
between renewable and nonrenewable
energy. They discovered how much
more efficient renewable energy is by
playing energy charades to follow the
path of energy made by coal, wind, and
sun.
The students went to a house on
campus that is made from 300 bales of
straw which, is covered with a layer of
clay. They learned how this house needs
very little heat from the tiny furnace in
the winter because most of the windows
face south, which is where the sun
shines most in the winter months. Not
only does the house receive all of its
energy from the large solar panels, but

This year a series of events called Babies,

events, geared towards children ages 0-4,
began at the Townhomes but will be moved
to High Street Methodist Church starting in
December. The goal of Babies, Toddlers,
and Books is to provide families with the
opportunity to expose their children to books
and activities that develop language at a very
young age. Each month the families that
attend will receive a free book. At the end of
the school year, families will be entered into
a drawing for a gift basket with books and
gift cards. The more events families attend,
the more chances they have to win the grand
prize! The events will run from 2:30-3:00 on
the following dates: December 5, January 9,

Another holiday season has come and gone and

Fostoria Junior/Senior High School would like to thank
our students, staff and community members for their contributions to the
many wonderful opportunities available to help others in need and give
thanks for what we have received ourselves.

In an effort to build on the

work being done through the
Leader in Me at the Longfellow,
Riley and Intermediate buildings,
Fostoria Junior/Senior High
School has taken its first steps in
becoming a Leader in Me school.
After participating in a two-day
professional development last
May, focused on the 7 Habits
of Highly Effective People,
staff members are currently
participating in a book study,
reading and discussing Stephen
Coveys book, The Leader in Me.

This fall a small group of teachers

and administrators also traveled
to Columbus, OH to attend the
Leader in Me symposium where
they had a chance to see the
positive impact the Leader in Me
was having on teachers, students
and parents in the development
of children into responsible,
understanding young men and
women.

After
witnessing
its
implementation in elementary
classrooms in our own district and
others, FJSHS staff members will

be visiting other Leader in Me

schools over the next few months
that serve students in junior high/
middle school and high school. It
is our goal to observe and better
understand how the 7 habits can
be applied in classrooms with
older students and utilized to help
all of our students experience

Our message this year has
been Honor those who came
before you. Leave a legacy for
those who will follow you.
Our students lived up to that
expectation as they honored the

Getting Fit with Mr. Haupert

So far this year we have dug a lot
deeper in the studentsabilities to throw,

roll, toss and catch. Our students have

really been Beginning with the End in
Mind by working towards our Jump

Rope goal. As well as learning about

putting first things first by starting with
the basic skills/tasks and moving to
more difficult ones.
Looking forward, we will be
working on goal setting while
preparing for our fitness test. This
process will involve taking a practice
test and working on writing goals
for the real test. Students will be in
charge of tracking how they are doing
on their goal and adjusting their goal
if needed. I want to wish everyone
Happy Holidays and a wonderful
Christmas break!

Legends of Buckeye Lore Raffle

Griffin, Jerry Lucas and Jack Nicklaus.

Raffle tickets are $10 a piece or 6 for
$50 and can be purchased in the main
office at FJSHS. Tickets will also be
sold during school events and athletic
contests. The winner will be drawn on
Saturday, February 18th at the last home
basketball game.

Transportation
Hard to believe that we are already
approaching winter break! The weather
is changing, getting colder and snow is
beginning to fly. Remember to dress
warmly for the bus stop and remind
children to check their seats before
getting off the bus for their hats, gloves
and scarves. If an item is left on the bus
it will be brought into the bus garage.
Please stay tuned to local media for

delays and closings. Also make sure

that your contact information is up to
date with your childs school so that
you receive School Announcement
notifications. When the road conditions
decline buses may run behind, thank
you for your patience! Our students
safety is our top priority! Happy
Holidays to all!

Response To Intervention
(RtI)/Multi-Tiered System of
Support (MTSS)
RtI and MTSS are both methods
of organizing and coordinating
school resources to create a more
efficient range of options that serve
all students in danger of not reaching
their potential. Early support is
available for all, whether they are in
general education, special education,
gifted programming, English as
a Second Language services, or
other specialized environments. All
students may access a menu of options
through the coordination of services.
Through these models, families and
educational staff work together in
new ways to provide assistance for
academic and behavioral needs.
There are typically 3 Tiers of

intervention. These Tiers relate

to the amount and intensity of
support that is needed in order for

Inclusion/Co-Teaching
On November 20th and 21st,

with coaching for those teachers who

will be implementing co-teaching
in their classrooms. The goal will
be to provide effective inclusionary
services, close the achievement gap,
and prepare, encourage, and support
these students for further education
beyond high school.
Benefits of Inclusion: 1)
Increases self-efficacy of low
achievers due to being included in
same children with a diversity of
talents and temperaments
Benefits of Co-Teaching: 1)
Decreases the adult to student ratio,

Lisa Dieker, Ph.D. presented ALL

staff a multitude of ideas and
strategies for servicing students
with disabilities within the general
education classroom. This was
well-received by the staff and many
have already begun implementing
the ideas and strategies provided!
In the coming weeks/months, there
will be follow-up Professional
Development through a partnership
with Bowling Green State
Universitys Amy Kramer along

the child to be successful within the

general education curriculum. As
students have difficulty achieving
academically or behaving within the
classroom environment, they move
up this pyramid into more intensive

and individualized
services until they reach their level
of success. As students move up
from Tier 1 to Tier III, typically more
school staff is involved (guidance
counselors, Title I Reading, Speech/
Language Therapists, etc.) and
smaller groups are required. Students
may move back and forth between
the tiers as identified through frequent
progress monitoring is completed and
determines their levels of need. The
frequent monitoring is imperative to
lend evidence to why more intensive
services, and even possibly, special
education support, may be needed.
Parents who have students
involved in the Intervention
Assistance Team (IAT) process or
those who may be referred in the
coming months, will become more
familiar with this process. The IAT
at each building will invite parents
to partner with the educational staff
to determine their childs level of
need. Therefore, this information on
RtI/MTSS is invaluable for you to
know as you are asked to attend and
participate in these meetings.
Please feel free to contact your
childs building or my office (419436-4101) for more information.
2) Increases student engagement
& participation, 3) Increases
frequency and immediacy of
corrective feedback.

Please check out the great

fundraising opportunity! For those
Buckeye fans out there, this is an
awesome piece of memorabilia! This
unique item is a 42 x 25 framed picture
with 13 x 10 matted, autographed
photos of Buckeye legends Archie
