CHRISTMAS PARTY GREAT SUCCESS

The thirty-eighth annual Springfield Masonic Community Christmas Dinner Party, sponsored by the
Lodge, Chapter and Council, was held December 5 with 50 plus residents and employees of the Masonic
Community, and an estimated 45 members, their spouses, children and grandchildren in attendance.
Companions Al Kilbourne, Roger Thornbury, Earl Arnett and John Wigger collaborated in preparing
their usual fine meal consisting of the popular Copeys ham loaves, au gratin potatoes, green beans,
assortment of salads and desserts, along with rolls, butter and drinks. The theme for this years program
was The Nutcracker Ballet, featuring a look at the history of the popular ballet and the story of the
nutcracker and the mouse king. Carols were sung and Santa Claus made his usual visit to the party
delighting both young and old alike as he distributed gifts to the children, grandchildren and residents
of the home. Less we forget, we wish to thank everyone who brought food, assisted in caring and serving
the residents of the home, and who so ably cleaned up the kitchen and fellowship hall after the party.
Many hands make for light work!

PEARL HARBOR DAY REMEMBRANCE

In honor of the Seventy-Fifth Anniversary of the premeditated sneak attack by the Imperial Forces of
the Japanese Navy on American Army and Navy bases, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, December 7, 1941, New
Carlisle Chapter hosted a Commemorative Remembrance Day Ceremony Wednesday, December 7,
2016. More than 60 veterans, spouses and family members, representing WWII, Korean, Vietnam,
Desert Storm, Iraq, Afghanistan and other related military assignments attended. The Tecumseh H.S.
U.S. Air Force Junior R.O.T.C., under the direction of MSgt. Antonio Ruiz, assisted in the ceremonies
by presenting color and demonstrating the meaning of the Flag Folding Ceremony, often conducted at
the funerals of military veterans. MSgt. Ruiz narrated a description of each of the thirteen folds. As
keynote speaker, MSgt. Ruiz concluded his remarks by urging us never to forget the sacrifices all
servicemen and servicewomen have made, not just at Pearl Harbor, but throughout history. Music was
provided by local professional keyboard artist Wayne Hobbs. We were also honored to have as our
special guest Ann Welch Ianni, sister of William Billy Welch, who was recently brought back to
Springfield for funeral services, which were conducted with full military honors. Billy Welch was one
of twenty-seven veterans killed on the U.S.S. Battleship Oklahoma, 75 years ago, who was an
unidentified casualty until just recently. Certificates of Respect and Appreciation were presented to 41
brave men and women veterans who set aside civilian life to put on the uniform and serve their nation.
High Priest Berry ended his remarks by exclaiming, Those we honor here tonight have come from all
walks of life but, each of you do have one thing in common. You share several fundamental qualities:
courage, pride, determination, selflessness, dedication to duty and integrity-all qualities needed to serve
a cause larger than ones self. May God bless each of you, may God bless the United States of America,
and may our country always remain the land of the free and the home of the brave!
