Project 2: Abstract Gridded Self-Portrait

Theme: Colors of Me
In this project, you will create a self-portrait that you will abstract by editing some
squares of your grid. Your goal is to create a composition which showcases:
Limited Color Palette that Symbolises Who You Are
Detailed Representation of the Face
Range of V
alue
Balance of Color
Movement that Guides the Viewer to the Focal Point

Step-by-Step Instructions:
Step 1: Print a Photograph of You Selfie Time! Have fun with these photos!!
Be sure your picture is 8x10 inches and in black in white. Dont have access to a printer, no worries! Just let
me know you need help with this step.
Step 2: Divide Your Photograph and Final Paper into 1 Squares
The best way to go about this is as follows make a mark at 1 around the entire border of your photograph
and paper. Then, connect the lines to create the grids on both your photograph and final paper. Be sure to
draw lightly.
Step 3: Trace the Basic Contour Lines of Your Face on Your Final Paper
Now, use the windows to lightly trace the basic outlines of your photo on your final paper to give you a
successful start. :)
Step 4: Refine/Abstract Your Drawing
Add in details and edit the spaces. Work from square to square, always referencing your photograph to ensure
that the the proportions of the face are correct. Determine, do you want to zoom-in in a specific square? Or
maybe you want to rotate some square? Could you morph yourself into something else? The sky's the limit!
While editing your drawing, think about the movement of your piece. Do you guide the viewer to a focal point?
Step 5: Add Color
Use your knowledge of a limited color palette and colored pencil techniques to shade your artwork using a
wide range of value. Before adding color, plan out where you want what colors to ensure one color isnt
overpowering an area. Additionally, use color to your advantage to bring out your focal point.
Step 6: Turn-In Your Project
Turn-in your project on the appropriate due date by submitting the link to your digital portfolio in the proper unit
folder on Schoology. You should have included a clear picture and artist statement in your slides.
