EXOFTALMOS EN EL HIPERTIROIDISMO.

RESUMEN
El exoftalmos, tambin conocido como la orbitopata tiroidea, es una enfermedad inflamatoria
orbitaria con un posible origen autoinmune que suele asociarse a trastornos metablicos de la glndula
tiroidea. Su presentacin clnica es muy variada y puede causar alteraciones significativas de la visin
y de la arquitectura orbitaria, lo que se traduce en una disminucin importante de la calidad de vida de
los pacientes; muchas veces provoca una severa afectacin de la personalidad. Afecta mayormente a
mujeres y est negativamente influenciada por factores como el tabaquismo, la edad, el sexo y la raza.
El tratamiento mdico debe ser precoz, agresivo y acorde a la fase en que se presente el paciente con el
fin de evitar sus graves consecuencias8.
ABSTRACT
Exophtalmos, also known as thyroid orbitopathy is an orbital inflammatory disease with an often
autoinmune origin associated with metabolic disorders of the thyroid gland. Its clinical presentation is
varied and it can cause significant disturbances of the vision and of the orbital architecture, resulting in
a significant decrease in the quality of life of patients; often causes severe impairment of personality.
It affects mostly women and it is negatively influenced by factors such as smoking, age, sex and race.
Medical treatment should be early, aggressive and based on the stage of the patient in order to avoid
grave consequences8.
