A Stitch in Time
down to visit another couple
in Rockaway and we spent a
summer there, but never knew
about Breezy being just down
the road. He met a friend there
and we went to visit for a day
and the kids went crazy over
the beach. I had to take care
of my children. McCarthy
and her husband, an NYPD
Inspector, raised eight kids in
Breezy Point, four of which
still live there. She also says
she has 13 grandchildren and
four great-grandchildren. To
them, shes Nana.
A woman of strong faith, it
wasnt long before McCarthy
found the church. The first
place I went to when I moved
down here was church,
she said. As one of the only
groups in the church, McCarthy joined the Rosary Society. They have meetings and
fundraisers to supply the altar
with things that they might
need, she explained. It was
the only activity around and
the only place I knew was the

Everything is mental. If you

feel good in your head, you feel
good, Ronnie McCarthy said
in the kitchen of her Breezy
Point home. With a mind as
sharp as her sewing needles,
youd never guess the woman
who leads Breezys weekly arts
and crafts program is turning
96 in February.
Many may know McCarthy from her involvement in
the weekly Breezy Point Arts
and Crafts group at St. Thomas More Hall. And many more
know her as a longtime familiar face in the Point. She
moved to Breezy Point with her
late husband, John, in 1957, at
a time where milk, eggs and
butter were still delivered by
the milkman. We first lived
here during the summers on
Gotham Walk. My husband
loved the beach and saw an
opportunity to build a home
from scratch. The great thing
was that they broke ground

on August 1 and we were here

by All Saints Day, November
1, she recalled. Coming from
the Laurelton area of Queens,
she suddenly found herself in
a beach community, despite
not being a fan of the beach.
My husband was a beach fan,
but I like the country. I had to
get used to the sand, she said,
but she chose to make her
family happy. We had come

church. We had Rosary Society on Thursday nights. I think

most of the women were glad
to get out instead of talking
baby talk. It was very active
and as soon as you joined
you became a chairlady. They
were so anxious to have new
blood. In 1974, McCarthy
started a new project within
the church. A new girl came
in and asked if we knew how
to knit and crochet and she
said she didnt, so we said
well gladly teach you, and
with that, and the permission of the priest at the time,
Father Sexton, the Arts and
Crafts program began.
A notice about the new group
was put in the local church
bulletin. We started with 10
people who were interested in
sewing, knitting and crocheting and it grew from there. Its
the best bunch of women, she
said. We started teaching basic crochet and knitting and
started the famous hangar that

Binge Help

Its the dead of winter and

its about to get deader.
Youve sworn off bingeing on food and drink (or
you should have). Your
chewing muscles are at
rest. Youve already used
a fork to poke an extra
hole in your belt for that
expanding
waistline.
Now what? Its that time
of year for binge replacement therapy.
Start with exercise.
Bend over (you might do
a little stretching first)
and pick up the remote.
Do some curls by pulling
a blanket up to your eyeballs. Reach, really extend, cmon you can do

it! Reach a little bit more,

thats it, and extend that
hand from under the covers and point the remote
at the TV. Good job!
Youve basically been a
bear eating and drinking
for weeks before settling
into a cave for hibernation. Bears sleep; you
binge watch TV (which
has to include Netflix,
Amazon Prime, and maybe HBO and Showtime).
Before you hunker
down, Ive got life changing advice for you.
But first I gotta confess.
I havent seen Breaking
Bad. Well, check that. Ive
seen a couple of episodes

and thought they were

pretty good but I never
did catch the fever which
compels you to watch all
62 episodes over two days
and 14 hours.
My failure to watch
Breaking Bad marks me as
morally and intellectually
bankrupt, I know, but Im
about to partially redeem
myself.
Some of you stop by
here for an occasional chuckle or smirk but I
know most of you come
for my medical advice.
Longtime followers of this
column know Ive insisted
you get colonoscopies (in
part so you can say things
like: Hey Doc, can you
now tell my wife that my
head isnt up there?) and
that back pain is all in your
head.
I cant tell you how many
people tell me they got rid
of nighttime foot cramps
after I wrote that all you
have to do is place a bar of

soap near your feet when

you get in bed. Some people have tried giving me
$20 because they saved on
their co-pay. Yep, a bar of
soap at your feet. Its insane but it works.
The bar of soap did not
help my shoulder pain (yes
I put a bar near my shoulder but turning over on a
bar of soap in the middle
of the night does nothing
for beauty sleep, even less
for sore shoulders). But
Ill figure out something
cause I know thats in my
head, too.
Anyway, instead of medical advice Ive gotta share
the TV-watching tip that
only a few are hip to. The
magic is in your hand, in
the remote control. Go to
settings and figure out how
to turn on Closed Captioning, especially when trying to watch stuff from the
BBC. Some shows, you just
cant understand what the
hell some characters are

THURSDAY,
JANUARY 5th

saying but Closed Captioning is like subtitles but you

only use them when you
have to. Its transformative.
Its not just for clueless
old-timers. I discovered
this little trick long before
I was an old piece of dirt.
Black Hawk Down was
supposed to be a good
movie but I couldnt hear
a word of dialogue over the
incessant helicopter noise.
I put on Closed Captions
and suddenly I was thinking this could win an Academy Award. The Wire was
another matter. The street
slang and mumbling of
some characters was impenetrable. I tossed on the
Closed Captioning and the
show became my all-time
fave.
Ok, quick recap: use the
remote to change settings.
Also use the remote to
change channel when The
Big Bang Theory comes
on. Dont waste your binge
time.

City Councilman Donovan
Richards and the City were moving towards Eminent Domain to
solve the long problem of the
Far Rockaway Shopping Center
before the death of property
owner Rita Stark. Such a move
tends to get neglectful landlords
to pay attention. The theater
on Beach 116th Street and the
string of stores that used to include the Sand Bar are properties that weigh on new developments and businesses on that
street. City Councilman Eric
Ulrich might start urging the
City to go after the landlords
of the theater and Sand Bar for
the public good. The de Blasio

NYC Parks is asking for comments / suggestions about what
to do with a one hundred million or so of extra FEMA money.
Our two cents: add bike ramps
on the street side of the concessions. As of now, bike riders are
supposed to dismount because
(poor planning!) there is a bottleneck at each concession. With all
this loot they can come up with
a design that allows bike riders
to keep riding while navigating
their way through the concession
areas. (Wed prefer they do it on

the beach side by widening the

boardwalk but that involves permits and all that nonsense).
*****
That was our two cents worth.
But we have another penny of
a thought. Some money could
be used for an iconic structure
something that makes people
know its Rockaway. We keep
pushing this one because we
know some day somebody will

chair or surfboard. A lighthouse.
Maybe Whaleamena.

The Idea Guys

Boardwalk

Bubble Up !
Okay, heres an idea that
wont get you rich. But, then
again, who knows. Its better
than the pet rock. If you dont
know what the pet rock is, ask
somebody over 50.
Anyway, this is about bubbles. Who doesnt love bubbles? Its time someone took
the universal love of bubbles
and applied it to kids bike
helmets and rollerblades.
Kids might resist putting on
a helmet but not if the helmet shot out some soap bubbles. You know how you blow
bubbles out of a plastic ring?
Same idea. Bubbles would
be generated by the wind as
kids peddled along. The soap
would sit in small containers
on each side of the helmet.

As soon as the wind picked

up the bubbles would flow.
There are water guns that
shoot bubbles they could
basically be attached to helmets, too.
Of course, a lot of rollerbladers are basically showoffs so
wouldnt they love to add even
more flair to their zig and their
zag? Just attach a little soap
bubble water gun to the back
of the rollerblade shoe.
Were thinking a little plastic fan would spin and make
soap bubbles. You have to get
in your garage and work on
this one but we dont think
you have to be Thomas Edisons other brother to pull
it off. And if you do, we bet
there will be more bubbles
in your future champagne
bubbles that is.

Ongoing Mess

By Peter J. Mahon

The Broad Channel Tidal

Flooding Mitigation and Street
Reconstruction Project currently underway on West 11th
and 12th Roads has been a long
time coming. Many people are
under the impression that this
project is a direct result of Super Storm Sandy's impact on
our town back in 2012 but, in

fact, this project actually stems

from a decades long battle on
the part of the community and
involved city agencies.
The community of Broad
Channel has long suffered
from deteriorating street infrastructure, unsafe conditions
and property damage caused
by routine and serious tidal
street flooding. For years, numerous requests for assistance
were made to city agencies and
elected officials by individual
residents, the Broad Channel
Civic Association and elected
officials, all of which resulted
in nothing more than vague
assurances on the part of the
City that it was aware of this issue and was working on plans
to mitigate the problem.
Nonetheless, in keeping with
the City's bureaucratic "rule of
no one." years passed with no
action being taken to address
this problem until May of 2010
when (then) Borough President Helen Marshall personally came to West 12th Road
and held a press conference

to announce that $24 million

in funds had been allocated
to fund a capital construction
project addressing the problem of tidal street flooding.
Shortly thereafter the RBA
Group was chosen as the project's design firm and after a
not-insignificant delay caused
by Super Storm Sandy in 2012,
EIC Associates, Inc., was chosen as the project contractor
and work on West 12th Road
finally started in early September of 2014.
Although the project's contractual completion date for
West 11th and 12th Roads was
stipulated as June of 2017,
there was much talk on the
part of DDC and others during mid 2016 that work was
proceeding so well that it was
anticipated that a substantial completion of street work
on West 11th and 12th Road
might be achieved as early as
December 2016.
As 2016 drew to a close, the
residents of West 11th and
12th Roads in Broad Channel

were looking forward to the

2017 New Year in anticipation of enjoying their brand
new raised streets complete
with brand new end of street
bulkheads. Unfortunately, It
recently became known that
work has been delayed and
the previously scheduled substantial completion date for
bulkhead, infrastructure and
street work on West 11th and
12th Roads which was to be
achieved via accelerated work
scheduling is no longer attainable and the contractor (EIC
Associates, Inc.) is now citing
the June 2017 completion date
stipulated in company's contract with the city (DDC).
The exact reasons for this delay are far from defined at this
point with only non-specific causative factors (ie: "tidal
flooding" and "weather") being offered at this time.
To complicate matters even
further, even the original contractual project completion

Parents Called Out

ondly, if your child receives a

summons or other violation, it
is because he or she did something wrong, not the caller.
Parents need to take responsibility for their children instead
of passing the blame.
Too many parents say, not my
kid. Guess what? It is your kid!
Our streets are littered with
empty beer cans and alcohol
bottles. It is the kids who toss
them where they want. They
leave the beach like a pig sty
after a night of partying, They
lay down in the street because
they are too intoxicated to do
anything else. I could go on
and on with what I have personally witnessed with drunk
underage teens, but I think you
get the picture - but many of
you will say, not my kid!
A.R.

Dear Editor:
This is in response to several letters regarding "Call In Off
Base." Firstly, I would like to
say that I doubt that the caller intended to "sabotage" the
two named businesses, but, instead, hold them accountable
for their actions. It is a known
fact that underage drinking
is a chronic problem here in
Ferry Advisories
Rockaway, one that is evident
Dear Editor:
to those who wish to acknowlThis letter was sent to NYedge it. Shouldn't our commu- CEDC President Maria Torres
nity be more concerned with Springer regarding the Rockathe effects that all this drinking way ferry:
has? How many 16 year olds

THE

dressing the following items

before ferry service from Rockaway to Manhattan is activated.
I. The Jersey barriers on
Beach Channel Drive near the
ferry landing that are blocking the sidewalk and street
must be removed. The barriers have been there since
Hurricane Sandy and pedestrians must walk in the street
get to the ferry dock. The barriers are into the roadway at
least 10 feet.
2. During loading and unloading of passengers, there
should be some type of flashing caution light for motorists on Beach Channel Drive.
Motorists need to slow down
near the ferry landing during
embarking and disembarking
of passengers. When the ferry
was in operation after Hurricane Sandy, the intersection
of Beach Channel Drive and
Beach 108th Street was littered with plastic pieces from
vehicles from numerous traffic accidents in the street. A
crew member of the ferry, after docking at the ferry landing should be able to activate a

GENESIS

The Rockaway Times

switch which will turn the caution lights on for 5-8 minutes.
3. At Beach 108th Street and
Beach Channel Drive the crosswalk should have a count down
clock for pedestrians crossing
Beach Channel Drive. For example, 20 seconds needs to be
allocated to cross the street. It
would not be a good idea to be
stranded on the center medium
when the traffic light changes
along Beach Channel Drive.
4. The street lights on Beach
Channel Dive for one block
east and west of the ferry dock
and one block south on Beach
108th Street should be changed
to the new LED lights which are
15 percent brighter. Rockaway
is subject to heavy fog during
certain times of the year.
5. At the ferry landing bike
racks should be installed, possibly in a fenced in area near
the ferry landing. A possible
location could be in the fenced
area by the sewer plant dock-just east of the ferry dock.
6. The ferry landing should
have a sign that says "Ferry

Landing" visible from at least
one block away with an email
address on it for schedule updates. Immediately after Hurricane Sandy there were many
Rockaway residents who did
not realize there was the ferry
dock at Beach 108th Street.
7. The ferry landing should
have proper electrical grounding in case of lightning. During
the summertime, at the first
sign of lightning the beach
is closed, resulting in two to
three hundred people waiting
on a metal ferry landing for
the ferry back to Manhattan.
The ferry landing will also have
large vertical metal pilings to
hold the barge in place, which
must also be grounded.
8. There should be a Fire Department Call box installed
near the ferry landing in case
of an emergency. On the ferry
landing there should be a sign
that says in case of Emergency
please call 911 or a direct dispatcher link.
9. There should be a phone
number and email address

posted to get ferry updates in

cases the ferry is not on time.
10. Several signs should be
installed that says "no fishing"
from ferry landing. (The bulkhead area near the ferry landing
is currently a very popular fishing
location for Rockaway residents.)
11. The curb cuts near the ferry landing and at the parking
lots must be wheelchair accessible.
12. A safety message should
be played before the ferry is
docking such as "Please remain seated while the ferry
is docking for your personal
safety." Most ferry accident injuries happen while docking.
13. During the summer time,
Rockaway residents like to take
a round trip ride on the ferry
during sunset and especially
on Fridays. Since NYCEDC is
using a small ferry there should
be a policy stating that if you
ride the ferry into Manhattan
you must disembark and get
on the end of the line for return trip to Rockaway. I would
not like to see passengers who
are coming home from work or
spending money in Manhattan

be left at the dock because one

wants to take a round trip ride
on the ferry. All ferry routes
should have a last stop and all
passengers must disembark
the ferry at that stop.
14. The ferry boats to be used
will have a passenger capacity
of 149 passenger minus three
crew members with only 112
seats inside the cabin. Then it
will be possible to have 34 passengers standing in the cabin
for the 50 minute ride to Rockaway or Manhattan. I feel that the
top deck should have the capacity to be canvas enclosed for the
winter or inclement weather in
order to increase seating capacity. From a safety standpoint,
it is not a good idea to possibly
have as many as 34 passengers
standing while docking. Again
most accidents happen during
docking. Since Rockaway and
Brooklyn will have ferry service
on the hour and not every 20
minutes like the East River ferry
service, then during commuting times it is very possible to be
at full passenger capacity.
15. If there is a snowstorm
someone has to be responsi-

Page 17
ble for snow removal in the
area. The snow will have to be
removed from the sidewalks
on Beach Chanel Drive, along
Beach 108th Street and towards the Rockaway Freeway.
If the snow is not removed
from the sidewalks in a timely
manner then ferry passengers
will be walking in the street.
The parking lot will also have
to be plowed and since the
Rockaway Ferry dock will have
open sides, snow will have
to be removed from the spud
barge and ramp.
In conclusion, the ferry
service for Rockaway is the
biggest investment in Rockaway by any Mayor in the last
50 years. I would not like to
see Mayor Bill de Blasio get
bad press from a preventable
accident or an otherwise bad
press incident especially before the 2017 mayoral election. I have been to numerous meetings and sent many
emails/ letters to NYCEDC
about safety concerns, but
unfortunately I have gotten
no response.

date of June 2017 is now apparently unattainable as the
City has struck a deal requiring the project contractor to
"pause" all construction activity on West 11th and 12th
Roads effective March 1, 2017,
to allow Build it Back access
to those streets to complete
scheduled elevations/rebuilds
of some 30+ properties. When
Build it Back will complete its
work and return the streets to
EIC Associates so that they may
complete the street work is, at
best, anyone's guess at this
point.
Concerns regarding the insertion of the Build it Back
program into the midst of the
street reconstruction project
currently raises more questions than actual answers.
Nevertheless, bulkhead and
street raising project activity
has been ongoing since September of 2014 and the present
delay (for undefined reasons)
coupled with the now planned

THURSDAY, JANUARY 5, 2017

work stoppage to accommodate BIB on March 1 was both
unplanned for and came as a
complete surprise to all W12th
Road residents who were looking forward to the previously
mentioned December 2016
substantial completion date.
The community deserves a
complete explanation of what
has brought us to this point
and a realistic overview of what
we can expect from this time
forward. The Broad Channel
Civic Association is particularly upset as they have been
attending monthly meetings
for a year at the Queens Borough President's Office where
it has been consistently maintained by the contractor that
both West 11th and 12th Roads
would have major road work
completed by Jan 1, 2017.
Right now, absent information unavailable to me, it appears that West 11th and 12th
Roads are looking at yet another summer without benefit
of a finished street!
Broad Channel, who would
anyone want to live an anywhere else?

Disposing Your
Christmas Tree
By Katie McFadden

Tis the season to toss the

Christmas tree. If you have a
real tree that you need to get
rid of, nows your chance.
If you want to keep things
simple, you can leave your
tree on the curb for Sanitation to pick up from now
through January 14. Be sure
to remove the stand, tinsel,
lights and ornaments and
leave the non-bagged tree on
the curb. Sanitation will collect the trees and they will be
chipped, mixed with leaves
and recycled into rich compost for city parks and gardens. Sanitation collected
more than 214,000 trees for its
tree-cycling program after
Christmas 2015.
Another option is to participate in the Parks Departments MulchFest, in which
trees are chipped and partic-

ipants can take home a bag

of mulch to use in personal
gardens. It will take place on
Saturday, January 7 and Sunday, January 8 from 10 a.m. to
2 p.m. at nearly 80 locations
across the city. Unfortunately, none of those locations
are in the local area, but there
are designated drop-off sites
where trees will be picked
up for MulchFest. The local
drop-off locations are Beach
94th Street and Shore Front
Parkway, the parking lot at
Beach 11th Street and the
Neponsit Home parking lot
on Beach 149th. The closest chipping sites are Marine
Park (East 33rd and Avenue
U) and Brookville Park near
Rosedale.
For more information on
Christmas tree collection and
recycling or MulchFest, visitwww.nyc.gov/dsny, www.nyc.

About Antibiotics
Since their introduction perhaps 80 to 90 years ago, antibiotics have revolutionized the
practice of medicine worldwide.
However antimicrobial resistance (AMR) threatens to impede
or even reverse some of this progress. In the U.S. resistant organisms cause 2 million infections
and are associated with 23,000
deaths each year. In Europe they
cause 25,000 deaths per year. The
costs of AMR are quite substantial and are estimated to be responsible for $20 billion in excess
medical spending in the US each
year. Today I would like to delve
into the reasons for AMR and
what is being done about it.
In the U.S. antibiotic use in an-

imals raised for food accounts for

80 percent of total antibiotic use.
Of that 80 percent, 74 percent is
added to feed to promote animal
growth. Human consumption of
animal products from animals
given antibiotics has been directly linked to AMR in humans. The
influence of agricultural use of
antibiotics on human health has
drawn a number of responses.
Most European countries have
banned the use of antibiotics to
promote animal growth. Here
the FDA requires producers of
animal drug products to report
annually the amount of products
sold. The FDA also encourages
food providers to voluntarily reduce antibiotic use but the FDA

does not ban their use.

Human antibiotic use also
contributes to the emergence of
AMR. Most hospitals have antibiotic stewardship programs which
often restrict the use of certain
antibiotics and require Infectious
Disease specialist approval for
the restricted drugs. Outpatient
care settings, and particularly
primary care offices, are another area of concern. Studies have
shown that when they were given
counseling and education antibiotic prescriptions from primary
care practitioners dropped considerably. Patients themselves
can also be problematic. Many
patients will go to their doctor
seeking antibiotics for minor,
and often viral, infections and,
if given antibiotics, many will
not take them as prescribed or
shorten the length of treatment
themselves. This leads to AMR.
Direct-to-consumer
advertising also often contributes to the
problem by causing patients to
seek treatment with products
which would be inappropriate in
their case.
The rate at which new antibiotics are being introduced has

The Rockaway Times

slowed considerably. Between
1983 and 1987 the FDA approved
12 new antibiotics while between
2008 and 2012 only 2 were approved. Since 2012 5 were approved. Many manufacturers
have left the antibiotic research
and development field because
of low prices, restrictions on use
by hospitals and others, and rapid development of resistance.
Research is being done on other tactics to fight AMR such as
harnessing the human immune
system, manipulating microbial communities such as the
human gut, vaccines, and antivirulence strategies. The latter
strategy attacks factors within
the bacterium without killing it,
thereby allowing the altered (less
resistant) bacterium to spread its
alterations to other germs rendering them more susceptible to
antimicrobial drugs. Meanwhile
both public and physician education will continue otherwise
the postantibiotic age predicted
by many will become a distinct
and unwelcome possibility.

Becoming a Lawmaker:
Part 2
By Mike Scala

"Great talking to you, Mike,"

the voice on the other end of
the phone said. "Whatever
happens from here, you have
friends in the White House."
Not bad for a kid from
Queens, I thought. We were
discussing America's College
Promise, the president's initiative to make community
college as accessible as high
school. Congress had balked
at the idea, so the administration was turning to the states.
A more educated population
was certainly an important
goal, though I had questions
about how to pay for it. Even
if the investment made sense,
the
Republican-controlled
State Senate was unlikely to
fund such a program.
President Obama's staff referred me to key players involved in its implementation
elsewhere in the country. It
turned out it was largely being
funded with private dollars in
what amounted to scholarship
opportunities for high-performing students. This would
be a long-term project, I realized.
"I have that research on
CityTicket for you," an intern
announced as he handed me a
piece of paper.
The Long Island Rail Road's
CityTicket program offered
$4.25 single direction trips
within New York City on weekends. Far Rockaway was excluded, however, with trains
traveling to and from that station having to pass through
Nassau County. The alleged
concern was that Long Islanders would take advantage.
Meanwhile, an off-peak ticket
to Penn Station was $8.25, almost twice as much as everywhere else in the city.
Now here was an issue we
could tackle with more urgency.
We had many arguments
for including Far Rockaway
Station. First, it was the right
thing to do. Last time we
checked, Rockaway was still
part of New York City and its

people should not be deprived

of a city benefit. Economic development could be created
by making travel to and from
the peninsula more affordable. The fear of Nassau residents seeking the discount did
not strike us as a good reason
to leave Rockaway out since
there were already other stations close to the border where
CityTicket was available. Furthermore, the price of a train
ticket is supposed to be determined by where you take the
train, not where you live.
The Democratic Conference,
tasked with helping us advance legislation, was initially unconvinced the majority
would entertain our bill -- the
Long Island Rail Road Fare Act
-- to correct the problem. Besides, it was still early in the
session and the focus was on
the state budget. That process
involved a series of late nights
in the Capitol, including a
twenty-five hour shift where
I managed a few naps in the
Legislative Office Building
during down time. When it was
all said and done, the budget
included $10.15 million for
St. John's Hospital and $12.94
million for transportation improvements in Rockaway.
But I was still determined to
move the Fare Act.
We held a press conference
at the train station. Back in
the Capital, I fielded questions from reporters over the
phone. Every morning, our office placed a call to the Senate
Transportation Committee to
inquire about getting the bill
on the next meeting agenda. I
had an intern produce a map
showing how Rockaway was
getting the short end of the
stick. We had several meetings with the director of the
committee, including some
uninvited visits. Every time an
article was published about
poor transportation in south
Queens, I forwarded it to said
director.
Our persistence paid off
and the bill eventually made

Garlic Pasta with

Shrimp

Remove the stalk from the chili,

split in half, and scrape away the
seeds. Slice lengthwise in two or
three pieces, then chop finely;
put to the side. Make sure your
prawns (shrimps) are deveined
and cleaned.
Place a large pan on high heat,
add olive oil, chili and mince or
grate the garlic. Lightly sweat for
30 seconds, add the prawns and
caramelize each side. Deglaze with
white wine, add grated zest of one
whole lemon. Season with salt and
pepper. Turn heat to very low.
Place your linguine pasta into the
water. I used soft fresh pasta that
only takes 4 minutes. Cook one less
minute as it will finish the last minute in the pan.
Add Parmesan cheese to your
prawns (shrimps), add the butter
and mix well until butter is melted. Add the chopped parsley, mix
or toss until evenly distributed and
serve immediately. Arrange the
prawns on the outside of the pasta.

Temple Remembers The

Finest and Bravest on
Christmas Day
By Dan Guarino

Call it a Christmas mitzvah,

or Santa with a schmear. But
either way, Rockaway police officers and firefighters cheerfully
welcomed a Christmas morning
visit courtesy of the congregation of Temple Beth El.
On the morning of Sunday,
December 25, members of the
Rockaway Park Temple delivered baskets of bagels and assorted cream cheeses to the

100th Precinct and the Beach

116th Street firehouse.
Beth El congregation members have made it a special
point to visit Rockaway precincts and firehouses on
Christmas morning in previous years.
The holiday deliveries, as
were those in the past, serve
as their token of appreciation
to those men and women who
help to keep our community
safe.

BRRRRRRAVO!
WET AND WILD WELCOME TO 2017
Hundreds of people, from Neponsit to

the craziest way possible: they jumped into
the ocean. (Photos by Peter Brady, who took

In This Together
By Helen Kilgallen

Empathy: the capacity to feel

the emotions of others as ones
own. This is the glue that binds
people. The first yoga class
that I taught at Ocean Bliss
was based on this very powerful word. I needed to feel the
emotions and physical limitations with my students. My
intention was simply to connect to everyone in the room
and adjust my teachings when
it was needed. If I were to
put myself in their shoes how

would I feel? Can we meet the

students where they are? It can
be challenging in an all-levels
class. Hence, that is why we offer open level and basic/gentle
classes and one is always welcome to attend either class.
Compassion and empathy
are similar but different. Compassion could be described as
wanting to help someone who
is suffering. Empathy, on the
other hand, is feeling how another person is feeling.
As we welcome in 2017 with
the unknown future perhaps

we could find empathy for one

another. We are in this together no matter how separate you
think we are. It doesnt matter
what you believe and who you
support. It is time to do whats
right for beings everywhere.
Embrace them all and you will
find peace. All of life is one.
Everything in this vast universe
of ours is held together in the
embrace of unity. Above all,
trust in the slow work of God.
Living in the moment is not
an easy task for some but it is
a practice we can work on in
2017. We are constantly planning, organizing and looking
towards the future. Yes, it is
necessary to look ahead and
make sure you are planning for
a successful future. But there
is beauty and peace in staying
in the moment. Dont miss
the present moment. It is precious and fleeting. It can be as
simple as smelling a delicious
cup of coffee. I love the aroma
of my morning coffee brewing and then I sit to enjoy the
moment. No phones, no Facebook, no TV. It is a moment of
joy.

it to the agenda. That meant it
would be considered and voted on by members of the committee. If it passed, it would
have the chance to reach the
Senate floor. It was seen as
an improbable occurrence to
get this far. But there was one
problem.
They say laws are like sausages in that it is best not seeing them made. Our bill had
been through revisions since
its first draft was passed down
to me. Its current form contained clarifying language that
was politically troublesome
for one particular senator who
wielded enough influence to
ensure the legislation's defeat. He began voicing his displeasure and our progress was
halted.
At a cocktail party in Albany one night, my colleague
scoped out this senator socializing with some big wigs. She
asked if I thought she should
approach him.
"This ought to be good," I
replied, knowing I could not

The Rockaway Times

As I wake up in a beautiful beach house on the North
Shore of Hawaii at 5 a.m. because my internal clock is
way off, I walk down to the
beach to witness the sunrise. Today there is not a
beautiful Hawaiian sunrise
on this cloudy day but I look
up and there is a gap in the
sky where I see a brilliant luminous light with a glorious
blue sky and I say thank you
God for always showing your
presence. I cry with ecstasy
knowing this life is short but
it is amazing in this moment.
I smile and take it all in: the
wind, the waves, the clouds,
the sky, the sun, and the
ocean. You can feel the magnificence from above. Darkness is necessary to feel and
see the light. Step outside
wherever you are and look
up, look out, look around.
You are surrounded by love.
You are love and you are
loved by so many. Open to
our world. Find compassion
for all beings and empathize
with those who do not have
the capacity to feel love.
stop her if I wanted.
I followed as she walked up
and made a spot for herself
at the table, then apologized
for intruding. He welcomed
her to the group and acknowledged my presence.
"So, I play softball in Far
Rockaway every weekend, and
the commute is very expensive," she told him. "This is
going somewhere, I promise."
"I know exactly where this
is going," the senator retorted
with a grin.
He turned to me, explaining why he was not able to
support the bill as written. I
understood his position and
in hindsight was disappointed in myself for not recognizing how the language
might have caused an issue.
I proposed a new, simpler
version that still achieved
the desired result for Rockaway. The senator did not
object.
"Amend the bill, will you?"
he said as he made his dramatic exit.
And with that, it seemed we
were back on track.

would bend up and we put

tassles on it. One of the women
said to a boy that it would be a
good gift for his mother and
he said, What is it? She said,
A duster. He looked at her
and said My mother doesnt
dust, McCarthy recalled with
a chuckle. The group also
started making baby blankets,
afghans and one of our favorites is the clothespin bag,
or a bag to keep plastic bags
in. It keeps the house tidier,
she said. Now we make draft
stoppers, socks, pet beds and
more.
The tightknit group currently stands at about 15 members, give or take. Some go
to Florida and leave, McCarthy said. She sang praises of
many of her students. One of
my star pupils is Mary Bosch
from Roxbury. She wanted
to learn to crochet and she
picked up on it very quickly. Shes progressed so much
and she goes to the Internet to
get patterns. She follows instructions very well and now

shes our pom pom maker,
she said. She also noted some
Rockaway members, Helen
Boyle and Jane McDade, who
are very faithful and good
workers. Then theres Joyce
Lee. Shes so clever. We call
her the lady with the golden
hands. She can crochet animals, she said. And they even
have some spring chickens in
the group. We have two new
members, who are between
65 and 70. Theyre our youngsters. They have so much energy, its wonderful, McCarthy said. Were all different,
but we all have the same desire to make something.
The group gets together on
Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to
1 p.m. at the St. Thomas More
Hall. Twice a year, usually
around Christmas and sometime in the summer when
more residents are around,
the group shows off their hard
work at a sale. All of the proceeds go back to the church.
Bringing arts and crafts to
Breezy isnt McCarthys only
contribution to the community. Prior to taking on the

important role of a mother,

McCarthy had worked a short
time as a nurse. Raising eight
kids took priority and she became a stay at home mom, but
in the 70s, McCarthy was given an opportunity to pursue a
Bachelors of Science. A class
assignment would later lead
to the development of Breezy
Points Medical Center. We
had an assignment to develop a community health center
because the teacher couldnt
believe that we didnt have one
in Breezy. It started as a class
project, but along the way, we
decided that we should try to
get it really going. I was given
a lot of responsibility because
I was the only one that didnt
work. It was a big undertaking, she said. But the women
were able to get the building
built and the doctors to fill
the space. The medical center
opened in the early 80s.
Theres a small plaque in a
dark hallway with our names
on it. I think we should have a
lighted sign outside, McCarthy joked.
Also in the 70s, McCa-

Page 35
rthy helped to start social
gatherings to bring together
the communities of Rockaway Point and Breezy Point.
There was no cohesion, she
said. So she helped start International Night, a party in
which everyone was assigned
a country and represented
each country with decorations, costumes and cuisine.
International night is the
thing that brought everyone
together. It took a lot of work
and planning, but it worked,
she said.
At 95, McCarthy says crocheting keeps her busy. She
also has a mahjong group that
she meets with weekly. McCarthy says the secret to living
long is eating well. Dont skip
meals, she said. She also says,
Don't lose you faith and don't
lose your hope. Keep Happy.
Living in Breezy also helps.
Im very happy living here.
I have great neighbors and a
great pastor. Its easy living.

Goal Setting
By Artie Wallace
I hope everyone had a very
Happy and Healthy New Year's
Eve. I would like to thank
everyone for the great following in 2016 and I look forward
to bringing you another year of
The DIYer.
Now its time to kick off 2017
on the right foot.
In most of my articles I refer
to planning ahead, things you
will need and so on. Planning
your projects can be just as important.
Lets start off with the basics:
1- Make a list of the DIY projects you would like to complete in the year to come.

2- For seasonal items, plan

to start them earlier enough to
have them ready for the season
to come, allowing a little extra
time just in case its needed.
3- When planning your projects for the year to come, be
sure to plan within your skill
level.
4- When planning ahead,
you should also consider
workspace, supplies and tools
needed.
Preparing for a project that is
on your list:
1- Research your project one
month before starting it. The
more you research it, the better
it will come out.

2- Have all supplies and tools

needed at least two weeks before youre ready to start your
project. Waiting til the last
minute can cause delays.
3- Have your workspace
ready two weeks prior to starting. If you need to clean up
the garage for a bigger project,
have it done and ready.
Seek out advice:
If you're having trouble researching your project or are
having questions that you
cant find answers to, ask your
friends, speak to people at the
local hardware store or write
in to me at rocktimesdiy@
gmail.com and tell me about
the project youre planning
and your questions. (Please
write in one month prior to

The Rockaway Times

projects to help ensure time
to cover it in an upcoming article).
Remember, the only stupid
question is one not asked.
Take pride:
I often tell people to send in
their pictures of completed
projects. Lets make 2017
the year it happens. When
you complete a project,
send in a photo and (if you
would like) a little about
the project (how you did it,
why you chose that project,
etc). I will not be able to use
every photo or project success story in an article, but
I will do my best to give it
no less than a mention in a
future article.

We might be a little biased but we think
some of the best photographers in the
world live in Rockaway. Here are some
shots that readers shared with us this
week. Send your photos (limit to 2 per
week) to mail@rockawaytimes.com and
well do our best to print them (space permitting). We do receive more than we can
