So often seniors and others of all ages with

disabilities get care from family and friends who
do not expect to get paid. However, the State has
recognized their contribution in helping to keep
these people out of nursing homes and continuing
to live in the communities they love.
The Adult Family Living/Foster Caregiver
Program is a new service under the
Connecticut Home Care Program for Elders
(CHCPE) and Personal Care Assistance
(PCA) Waiver.
Assisted Living Services, Inc. is a Credentialed
Service Provider that is responsible to provide
education, training and oversight for Foster
Caregivers by a Registered Nurse. We also
provide caregivers a tax-free stipend of up to
$500 per week, depending on complexity of
care.
In order to qualify the person receiving care must
be eligible for the CHCPE or PCA Waiver
Program, and need care every day from a
caregiver living with them. Please note that
spouses do not quality.

Helping Veterans in new ways

Veteran Coffee House
Our hats are off to Mark Halliday, our Community Liaison for
developing a program held each month at the Wallingford
Senior Center. Mark has always had great respect, and deep
admiration for veterans so when he came to us with the idea of
getting together a group of veterans on a casual basis for
coffee, pastry, and muffins, and with the approval of the
Wallingford Senior Center we said go for it. At the last
Veterans Coffee House there was nearly 30 men and women of
various ages in attendance for a presentation about a Medal of
Honor recipient, a brief film was shown and discussion
ensued. New members to the group stood and were cordially
introduced, and each described their service to our country. It
was a heartwarming and superb way to give something back to
those that gave so much.
LIAISONfrom the Latin word to Bind. Nice job Mark!

If your client is complaining of vision problems they

should see their eye specialist. They may be
developing cataracts.
Cataracts are cloudy areas in the eyes lens causing blurred
or hazy vision. Some cataracts stay small and dont change
your eyesight a lot. Others become large and reduce vision.
The most common type of cataract is age related. This cannot
be corrected by eyeglasses or eye drops. This is a natural
progressing eye condition.
Cataract surgery can restore good vision. It is a safe and
common treatment. It is the most common surgical procedure
performed worldwide. If you have a cataract, your eye care
professional will watch it for changes over time to see if you
would benefit from surgery.
After surgery your client may have itching and mild
discomfort. Your eye may be sensitive to light and touch.
After one to two days mild discomfort should disappear. The
doctor may have the client use eye drops to help healing and
decrease the risk of infection.
After the client returns home it is best if they do not lift heavy
objects or bend from the waist to pick objects up from the
floor. The client's vision may be blurry. Most healing is
complete in eight weeks.

It is Flu Season, Protect Yourself

The immune system of a senior weakens with
age, making them more susceptible to the flu. It
is important for all seniors to get vaccinated
against this year's flu strain.
Last flu season, sixty percent of flu related
hospitalizations and nearly eighty percent of the
deaths were in seniors 65 and older. This year
the vaccine should be a better match for the flu
strain, and there is an adequate supply. The
vaccine lasts six months, which is the length of
most flu seasons.
Seniors are also at a greater risk of pneumoniaa complication of flu. Seniors should also speak
to their doctor about the pneumococcal vaccine.
Wishing All Our Staff and Clients a Happy and
HEALTHY New Year!!
