DIGITAL NETWORKING
Without question, two words that recur
with increasing frequency in our
industry are digital, and networking.
This well illustrates how innovation in
this industry gradually moves into the
mainstream of product specification.
Only a few years ago, the use of
Internet technology to access images
over long distances would have been
commented on as exceptional.
Today, for almost every major
installation, the use of digital
technology to monitor and relay images
is accepted as the norm. This process is
continuing and spreading through the
whole marketplace. The growing
popularity of day/night cameras over
individual colour or monochrome
cameras demonstrates a similar trend
in another sector of the industry.

WITH OVER 50 CAMERA OPTIONS TO CHOOSE FROM,

SELECTING THE CORRECT VISTA CAMERA FOR YOUR
APPLICATION MAY APPEAR DAUNTING. ONCE YOU
HAVE CLARIFIED YOUR OBJECTIVES HOWEVER, THE
DECISION BECOMES CRYSTAL CLEAR

Specification of the right CCTV camera

for a project is not always the easiest of
processes. There are many factors that
have to be taken into account: technical
specifications, the application and its
requirements, as well as any physical
constraints the site may impose. With
ever increasing product ranges available
in the marketplace, and technology
constantly evolving to optimise
performance, reliability and functionality,
it is quite a challenge to make an informed
decision to meet the requirements for
the job whilst remaining within projected
budget. Understanding the many
variables within CCTV camera technology
today can only be an advantage in
helping you make the right choices.
At the heart of the CCTV camera
technology is a CCD sensor (Charge
Coupled Device) that converts light into
an electrical signal. This electrical signal
is then processed by the camera
electronics and converted to a video
signal output that can then be either
recorded or displayed on to a monitor.
However, the treatment of the video
signal is then dependant on the type of
camera. CCD chip cameras can be divided
into two principal types: analogue or the
more recently introduced digital versions.
These can be sub-divided further into the
following:
medium resolution monochrome
medium resolution colour
high resolution monochrome
high resolution colour
day/night cameras that provide colour
in the day and monochrome at night.
To complicate matters even further, each
of the above is generally available with
different levels of performance like a
car model varying from base features to
top of the range.

MONOCHROME OR COLOUR?
The human eye remembers and recalls
things better if they appear in colour
its easier to track down a brown-haired
person wearing a red sweater and blue
jeans than a dark, grey-clad figure that
would be produced in monochrome.
Colour cameras carry an additional
premium in price compared with
monochrome cameras. But they are also
less sensitive making night usage an
impractical option unless good lighting is
available.

Monochrome cameras can offer Infra Red

(IR) sensitivity allowing their use with
covert IR illumination possible. This can
be particularly useful where planning
permission makes extra lighting
impractical or the security requirement
is such that intruders should not be
alerted to the existence of CCTV
surveillance.

ANALOGUE OR DIGITAL?
Until recently most cameras have been
of the analogue type, producing good
quality images at an affordable price.
However, the introduction of Digital
Signal Processing (DSP) has increased
both the flexibility of using security
cameras whilst enhancing the quality of
the colour images produced.
At the heart of DSP lies computer
microchips, or chip sets which have
replaced the conventional integrated
circuits in the camera head. This enables
DSP camera manufacturers to offer
installer friendly, feature-rich products.
The market for DSP technology falls into
two broad categories: standard and
premium DSP. Standard DSP cameras
generally offer more consistent picture
quality than their analogue counterparts,
operating over a wider range of lighting
conditions. Premium DSP cameras,
however, have much richer functionality.
This includes programmable intelligent
backlight compensation (BLC), Video
Motion Detection, remote set-up and
control using a serial data link; built-in
character generator and on-screen
menus. These features make Premium
DSP cameras the ideal choice for
complex surveillance conditions such as
those encountered in town centres.
Some situations may require a standard
DSP camera, but with a specific premium
feature.
This innovative feature is ideal in
awkward lighting situations, e.g. a
camera looking towards a shop window.
In the morning, the sun may be in the
top left corner of the window, but then
moves across the field of view during the
day, causing poor picture quality in most
cameras. Intelligent backlight
compensation is a function that will
ensure crisp detailed pictures
automatically throughout the day.

COMBINATION CAMERAS
Becoming more and more popular for
general surveillance applications is the

combination camera. This is a camera

that has a vari-focal lens integrated
within the camera at point of
manufacture, such as the Vista
NCL735CK. Such cameras are simple and
quick to install since the camera and lens
are pre-configured, all the installer needs
to do once mounted in a suitable
location, is adjust the lens to provide the
required field of view, fine focus, and the
job is complete.

CCD CHIP SIZE

CCTV cameras generally use CCD chips
that are designed for the consumer
camcorder market. Originally, the chips
used were half-inch image diagonal, but
the drive for reduced size led to the
development of third-inch and more
recently quarter-inch chips.
The half-inch chips are capable of
producing the highest sensitivity and
resolutions owing to the simple fact that
they are able to gather more light. Thirdinch chips now form an increasing part of
the market and as product development
continues their performance is
approaching that of their larger brothers.
Quarter-inch chip sets are a relatively
recent development and are being widely
used in consumer camcorders. Currently
their use in CCTV is still somewhat
limited because of the lack of availability
and range of quarter-inch format lenses.
As a general rule, quarter-inch cameras
provide the lowest cost and performance
while half-inch cameras provide premium
performance and are more expensive.
Mid-priced third-inch cameras make up
the bulk of cameras used in the market
today.
The extensive Vista camera range
encompasses a diverse spectrum of
technologies and performance allowing
the installer and end-user to select the
"right tool for the job". The top-end
cameras provide a sophisticated spread
of features that can be user set to
optimise performance in the most
demanding situations.
The entry level products provide a
relatively basic set of functions, but
deliver quality images whilst remaining
reliable and cost effective. Whether
youre looking for a workhorse or a
highly featured, premium performance
camera, Vista offers a reliable and
consistent solution to your needs.

THE ULTIMATE FUNCTIONALITY

FROM ONE CAMERA FAMILY
VISTA PROTOS A BRIEF
HISTORY
The original Protos cameras were the
first range of cameras developed in
order to fill the need for a single
design, that had enough variations to
be suitable for virtually any installation.
Up until the launch of the first Protos in
1991, camera ranges were usually
limited to a small number of
applications with installers usually
having to choose models from various
manufacturers in order to best suit the
specific needs for the job. The
introduction of the Protos enabled
installers to mix and match features,
while keeping the camera casing design
the same, thus not detracting from the
dcor of the building.
Since the days of the original Protos
cameras, much has changed. The
design of the camera casing fits in with
modern day dcor and the features
consist of the latest advancements in
CCTV. However, the original culture is
still being followed and there are
currently 24 different variants in its
third incarnation; the Protos3.

THE UKS FAVOURITE CAMERA

Sales of the Protos3 camera have
exceeded 104,000 units since their
introduction in Spring of 2000. We
know of no other camera range that
has had such success in the mid to high
range camera marketplace, or used in
such a diverse range of applications.
Offering superior performance,
functionality and versatility at highly
competitive prices, there is a Protos3
camera to suit every budget, and every
environment.

PROTOS 3 RANGES
YOUR CHOICE
The Protos3 family is broken down into 4 unique ranges to make it
easy to choose the correct camera for your needs:

PROTOS 3
The Protos3 Standard Range has been designed to offer the installer
straight forward installation and end users all the functionality and
features required for their everyday applications. These cameras offer
the quality and reliability associated with the latest SuperHAD CCD
technology.

PROTOS 3
The Protos3 ExView Range of colour and monochrome cameras offer
high-end performance, quality, reliability with the additional features
of eight window BLC and built-in peak white inversion. These digital
cameras provide optimum picture quality even in the lowest of light
conditions. Features like the wide-ranging power supply, genlock and
S-VHS output also come as standard on this particular model.

PROTOS 3CM
The Protos3CM Colour/Monochrome camera range is the ideal choice
for 24 hour monitoring. Automatically switching between colour
operation during the day and monochrome operation at night, you can
be sure of capturing the best images no matter what the conditions.

PROTOS 3PRO
The flagship Protos3 Pro is the latest edition to Vistas most popular
camera range. Boasting all the features and functionality associated
with other Protos3 cameras, this model also includes an advanced
remote set-up capability, with four groups pre-set for convenience.
A switchable IR cut filter is provided for optimum day and night
operation.

resolution, or a high resolution picture dependant on the model. The 1/2"
monochrome version has extended IR response and a higher resolution
making it suitable for budget constrained high end installations.
All cameras in the Protos3 Standard range can be used internally, or
externally with a suitable housing.

KEY FEATURES

The Protos3 EXview range is the ultimate in low light

sensitivity cameras. With 8 versions to choose from you
can be sure to match the correct camera to the job at
hand.

High IR sensitivity
Peak white inversion
BLC with 8 user selectable
zones
Wide ranging power supply

The Protos3 EXview range features

the highly acclaimed EXview CCD
chipset which has been specifically
designed to give high resolution
images, even in very low light
conditions. This makes the Protos3
EXview suitable for a number of
applications where previously
additional lighting may have been
needed - particularly for a colour
solution. The monochrome versions are
highly sensitive to IR light making them
the ideal choice for night time
surveillance using discreet IR
illuminaton. Because of this increased
sensitivity, a high wave length (nM) IR
lamp can be used for effective "covert"
night time surveillance where the red
glow of the IR bulb cannot be seen.

WHERE TO USE THE PROTOS3

EXVIEW RANGE

White balance with 4 user

definable settings
Gamma adjustment

As mentioned, the EXview chipset is

ideal for use in low light conditions, but
the benefits dont stop there. The
picture gained from the Protos3
EXview range also provides less
smear in bright light, such as direct
light from a spotlight, or car headlights.
The benefit of this is the picture will
not "white out" and usable images such
as car number plates and colour
definition will still be seen.

S-Video O/P

SONY EXVIEW CCD CHIPSET

The EXview chipset utilises OCL (on
chip lens) structure in order to provide
very high quality, low light performance.
Vertical smear is also almost eliminated
due to the cell structure of the chipset,
which minimises the undesirable
reflection of light onto the CCD surface.

CAMERA RANGE

THE camera choice for 24 hour uninterrupted surveillance

A colour/monochrome camera will
automatically switch between colour
operation during the day, to
monochrome operation at night. This
method means that only one camera
is needed to do the work of two. This
has obvious cost benefits both in
materials and installation.

installations.

The camera will decide to switch from

colour to monochrome (and vice
versa) when light levels get to a point
where the other mode will give a
more useful picture. As colour
cameras are less sensitive, and
monochrome cameras do not give as
much scene information during the
day, a colour/monochrome solution is
the perfect answer to ensure that
you are always getting the best
possible images.

It is advantageous to use a lens with

a low F-Stop. This will ensure
maximum light is allowed through to
the CCD giving better quality pictures
in low light conditions.

COVERT &
DISCREET
CAMERAS AND DOMES
responsible policy should always be
introduced to ensure that footage from
covert cameras is used for the
purposes it was intended.

a) Covert surveillance where there

is a requirement to monitor
activities in a particular location,
completely undetected, e.g. in
areas of high security like
jewellers and banks. They are also
useful for back-up surveillance in
installations where the primary
CCTV equipment is of a more
traditional nature, i.e. standard
cameras. In this case Covert
Cameras can operate as a back-up
where primary cameras are
disabled by an intruder.
Covert cameras, in essence, are a
means of offering surveillance of an
undetected or more discreet nature.
Suitable for use in a broad range of
internal applications, these miniature
cameras have been designed and
developed to provide monitoring
tools that are disguised in the form
of everyday commercial and domestic
objects.
This ensures that they are able to
blend inconspicuously into any
background and consequently do not
catch peoples attention. As a result,
there are a number of state-of-theart products which have been
introduced into the market to meet
security demands, such as Passive
InfraRed (PIR) sensors, containing a
minute camera within. These
products are available in monochrome
or colour versions and with optional
audio.
Covert cameras tend to be used
where there is a requirement to
achieve particular objectives. These
tend to fall into the following
categories:

Designed to provide discrete video and

audio surveillance for a wide range of
internal applications, the Vista range of
monochrome and colour covert
miniature cameras includes a choice of
Passive InfraRed (PIR) intruder alarm
sensors and fixed domes.

VPIR RANGE
The VPIR range mimics a Passive
Intruder Alarm Sensor offering a
number of options to suit the
majority of covert surveillance
requirements. In its simplest form,
the sensor housing contains a
miniature camera for surveillance.
However, this model is also available
with an integral microphone for audio
recording and active sensors which
can be used to trigger a recording
device, e.g. a VCR.

b) Discreet/Unobtrusive surveillance
often there is a need for a
surveillance system that is less
conspicuous, not necessarily as an
attempt to hide the fact that
monitoring is taking place, but
more for marketing or style
considerations.
When introducing a covert system, it is
important to recognise that access to
recorded material must be kept to a
minimum to ensure the privacy of
individuals who may appear. A

VANDAL
RESISTANT
CAMERAS
WHEN CCTV BECOMES A TARGET
Public opinion surveys show consistently that people feel safer with CCTV than without it.
Thats not a view shared by criminals of course, which accounts for the rising number of
attacks on CCTV system themselves.
The Vista Vandal Resistant range has been designed in order to combat this potential
problem in areas where cameras are subject to such attack, or even harsh environments
which may damage conventional cameras. The protection comes from the camera housings
which are manufactured from tough polycarbonate materials able to withstand blows from
items such as club hammers, scaffolding poles and baseball bats. The vandal resistant range
use special tamper proof screws so access to the camera module is impossible without the
tool which is supplied.
All housings within the vandal resistant range come with a smoked glass bubble, through
which the camera operates. This is very useful, particularly in the dome versions, as
onlookers cannot easily see which way the camera is pointing, thus acting as a further
deterrent.
The main point in using a vandal resistant camera is to capture images no matter what is
happening around the unit. You will find that the Vista range of vandal resistant cameras
meet such a challenge very effectively.

APPLICATIONS FOR VANDAL

RESISTANT DOMES
There are many applications for
vandal resistant domes such as:
Railway Stations, prisons,
shopping centres, car parks, stair
wells, schools, lifts.
However, a good rule of thumb is
to consider using one wherever a
camera will be located where
tampering can occur, or attack
from vandals may be a threat.

FIXED DOMES
Due to their success as a deterrent
against shoplifting, the use of fixed
domes in retail environments has
expanded dramatically. As a result of
their increasing popularity, they are
now used in a broad spectrum of
internal surveillance applications.
From banks to night clubs, apartment
lobbies to car park entrances, the use
of fixed domes continues to spread
into wider commercial and industrial
sectors.

VVRD4V8 FIXED DOME RANGE

Equally at home within external
(heater required) and internal
applications, this latest addition to
the Vandal Resistant range comes
with either a colour or monochrome
camera.
The die-cast aluminium housing has
been specifically designed to be
extremely strong, as has the
moulded, puncture-proof,
polycarbonate dome bubble. The
result is a particularly robust unit,
able to repel the unfriendly attention
of even the most extreme of
environments.
For ease of installation these units
can either be wall or ceiling mounted,
with the cabling being either fed
through the top of the unit, or out of
the side, into a securely armoured
conduit.

VVRD13 FIXED DOME RANGE

The VVRD13s discreet design looks
at home in virtually any environment.
Suited for internal applications, the
two versions in this range cater for
either a monochrome or colour

area than the VVRD4V8 range, the
dome sits flatter being again
designed to be mounted on either a
wall or ceiling for flexible positioning.
The varifocal lens featured on these
units allow the image captured to be
adjusted to get to the desired picture
view. This again adds to the flexibility
of camera location and application.
The VVRD13 is particularely suitable
for use in correctional facilities.

Number plate recognition at

speeds in excess of 100mph

Control of barrier gates

The automated optical recognition

and subsequent recording of vehicle
registration plates has been
something long since strived for by
CCTV manufacturers. However, it has
only been until very recently that hitech camera technology has been
fused with advances in computer
processing power and the
development of "Smart" algorithmic
software to finally deliver such an
important solution.

Once acquired, this image is then fed

to the VNPR controller running the
VistaBase software engine. Once
received VistaBase starts
interrogating the image, looking for a
rectangular area. When this has been
identified a copy of the original
image is taken, with the software
automatically scanning this rectangle
area for characters.

Vehicle speed logging

Unlike other number plate

recognition software, VistaBase does
not just stop at one image of the
number plate. Having the ability to
process over 70 images per second
VistaBase uses an advanced filter
system to provide a user definable
"hot zone" within the cameras field
of view. Such an approach minimises
number plate size and time spent on
processing images from the target
vehicle. The result is multiple image
capture of the approaching vehicles
registration plate for further
crosschecking and crystal clear
identification.

Although Vistas VNPR recognition

software will operate with a standard
video composite video input, the
VNPRC camera head has been
specifically designed to overcome
some optical issues resulting from
the demanding environments the
application is used within.

VNPR (Vista Number Plate

Recognition) is a proven, reliable,
automated number plate recognition
and capture system, comprising of
two main components - the camera
head, and the software engine.
Vistas VNPR camera head has been
developed specifically for its
demanding role, carefully integrating
camera, optics and infrared
illumination. The result is an
extremely reliable hardware unit,
fully operational 24 hours a day, 365
days a year.
Although new to the market Vistas
VNPR software engine has been in
development over many years, in fact
by leading British technical
Universities and graphic software
houses. Fine-tuned to deliver to
Vistas exacting product standards,
the VNPR software engine is loaded
onto a purpose built ruggedized PC.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

First of all an image is acquired via
the VNPRC camera head. With its
carefully matched and integrated
components many issues that have
historically hampered cameras
previously developed for this function
are easily overcome. These issues
have traditionally related to vehicle
speed, reflectivity of number plates,
accurate focus in both day and night
time operation, and most importantly
- operation at nighttime with on
coming vehicle headlights.

Calculation of car parking charges

Once identified this number is then

passed to the database application of
VistaBase, which in turn decides on
the appropriate action to take. All
information is saved to the units PC
hard disk for later retrieval or
interrogation. At this point the
software can also switch to another
camera and capture an additional
image, providing for example an
overview of the whole scene, or even
the drivers face.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Once the number plate has been
captured the system can provide
many automated activations or
generated reports. These can include
for the end user:
Automatic entry for authorised
vehicles to secure areas
Car park charges
Operator notification of known
suspect vehicles

Average length of vehicle stay

Generate welcome messages to
arriving visitors
Logging of all vehicles entering
covered areas

WHY USE A VNPRC CAMERA

HEAD?

To elaborate, most registration plates

are retro reflective, meaning they will
reflect back a very high proportion of
the light. Unfortunately, traditional
direct halogen light cannot be used
to overcome this problem, as the
vehicle driver would be dazzled with
obvious consequences.
Additionally, car headlights also play
a negative role since they cause the
lens to close down to accommodate
the highlights of the headlights. This
would result in the number plate
details being obscured.
To overcome these issues, the Vista
VNPRC camera heads have been
manufactured with an integrated
system, specifically designed for
number plate capture. Careful
matching of camera and lens,
combined with electronic shuttering
techniques and advanced infrared
lighting technology, has provided a
solution that will provide reliable
image capture, time after time after
time.

KEY FEATURES:

SELECTING THE MOST APPROPRIATE LENS

FOR A SPECIFIC INSTALLATION IS CRITICAL
TO ACHIEVING YOUR OVERALL OBJECTIVE...

Wide range of choice ensures price

sensitive applications can utilise lenses
without unneeded features
High-functionality lenses lead the field
in performance effective at low light
levels and fast response times
Choice of all leading technologies
Efficiency in manufacturing ensures
price-competitiveness is not gained at
the expense of quality
Colour corrected

There are many types of lenses on

the market and choosing the right
lens for your application is as
important as choosing the right
camera. There are a number of
variants to choose from, but with a
little understanding of what your
options are, lens selection becomes
a lot easier.

FORMATS 1, 1/2, 1/3 & 1/4

The lens formats match that of the
camera CCD sensor formats, and as
such a variety are available to
ensure that a correct camera/lens
match is made. It is most cost
effective to match lens size to the
camera CCD size, though using a
larger lens format can often be
advantageous since it offers
greater depth of field (the range of
distances from the situation of the
lens before objects become too
close, or too far away, to remain in
focus). You cannot use a smaller
lens format than the camera CCD
format. The current lens formats
are 1, 1/2", 1/3" and 1/4".

AUTO IRIS, DIRECT DRIVE,

GALVOMETRIC AND EI
Much confusion has been caused by
the introduction of new lens and
camera technologies to achieve the
correct setting of the iris for a
given light level. Manufacturers use
the same terms for different
systems. The following descriptions
refer to what is used in this
product guide.
Auto Iris (AI) - A lens that takes a
video signal reference from the
camera. It uses this in an amplifier
to drive a DC voltage to open or
close the iris aperture. The video
level control is part of the lens.

Direct Drive (DD) - A lens that

takes a reference DC voltage from
the camera to open or close the iris
aperture. The video level control is
part of the camera.
Electronic Iris (EI) - This is a
camera that uses its electronic
shutter to control how much of the
light falling on the CCD sensor is
used to produce a picture, thereby
emulating the iris control of the
lens. Video level is normally factory
preset - suitable for internal use only.
Galvometric Drive is the method by
which the small DC voltages
produced by either AI or DD
systems are converted into
movement of the lens iris. It is a
modern cost effective alternative to
the servo drive method. It is used
in both AI and DD lenses.

MANUAL IRIS
Manual iris lenses can be adjusted
at the time of installation and are
suitable for use where the lighting
levels remain constant. This is more
likely to be in an internal application.

FIXED IRIS
This type of lens offers no
adjustment and whilst being the
most cost effective type of lens due
to the lack of moving parts, needs
to be carefully selected for the
application.

FOCAL LENGTH
The focal length of a lens is concerned
with the field of view. A 8mm focal
length will give a narrower field of
view than a 4mm focal length for
example. Therefore 8mm would be
good for viewing an entrance way
and 4mm would be good for giving
an overview shot of an office.

FIXED FOCUS LENSES

These lenses do not feature any
focal length adjustment which has
many cost benefits. They are
indeed the cheapest form of lens
available, however their lack of
flexibility means that a careful
selection must be made in order to
be suitable for the application. A
number of focal length options are
available to match your specific
needs.

VARIFOCAL LENSES
Varifocal lenses offer increased
flexibility as the field of view can
be manually adjusted to the
desired level. Although slightly
more expensive than fixed focus
lenses, these lenses are popular
because the desired view is easily
achievable.

ZOOM LENSES
Zoom lenses offer the greatest
functionality once installed as the
focal length can be remotely
adjusted from the comfort of the
control room. This means that a
single lens can be used to view a
wide area and if an intruder should
be detected the zoom function will
allow facial details and other
identifying features to be captured.

F STOP
The light gathering speed of the
lens is expressed as an F-stop
number. This literally means the
amount of light captured by the
lens in a given period of time; the
lower the F-stop range, the more
light that can be transmitted. Low
F-stop lenses are suitable for low
light operation.

VISTA PROFESSIONAL
RANGE OF ZOOM LENSES

OPTIMUM FUNCTIONALITY FOR CCTV

INSTALLATIONS

KEY FEATURES
Colour corrected optics

The Vista range of zoom lenses consists of 13 units designed

to offer the ultimate in flexibility for virtually any CCTV
installation. When used in conjunction with control hardware,
such as the Triplex Columbus HDR and telemetry receiver,
the user has the ability to adjust focus and field of view or
"zoom in" on a subject. This has many benefits such as only
one camera needs to be used to get both an overall scene,
and a close up scene, depending on the need at the time.

Neutral density filter

Compact design
Pre-set versions
AI & DD versions

Available in 1/2" and 1/3" formats, with both C and CS mount

alternatives, it is easy to find the right lens to meet the job
at hand. Presets for zoom and focus are available (denoted
by the suffix P on part numbers) which allow the lens to be
set at certain viewing angles to ensure quick display of a
usable image when a preset is activted. These lenses fall into
two distinct product types:

STANDARD ZOOM
These lenses rely on technology within the camera to adjust
the iris of the lens making for a more cost effective unit.
However, the camera used must support this feature.

SUITABLE FOR:

COLOUR CORRECTED OPTICS

The lens optics of all Vista lenses are colour

This is a simple setting, if it is needed at all. With the camera viewing a

BACK FOCUS - ZOOM LENSES

Before adjusting, note how the focus ring on the zoom lens appears to have
little or no effect when the lens is set to wide angle, and conversely it has a
large effect when on telephoto. With the focus set to far (fully clockwise
viewed from the front), aim the camera at a subject over 30 metres away,
set to wide angle and adjust the back focus for optimum clarity. Now zoom
into telephoto and focus on a nearby object, keep this object in view as you
slowly zoom out and if all is set correctly it should stay in focus, or track,
all the way out. If possible it is better to perform this adjustment in low
light conditions or with a filter covering the front optic, a No. 3 filter is
recommended, as this will ensure the iris is fully open giving the smallest
depth of field and, therefore, the best results.

'F' STOPS
The F number is an indication of the amount of light that will be passed through
a lens. The smaller the F number the more light is passed. The F number is
calculated by dividing the focal length by the effective diameter of the lens.
When you adjust the lens up by one F stop, you halve the light passing through
it. The F stop assumes that there are no losses in the lens.

MIXING C AND CS
CAMERAS & LENSES
The difference between C and CS
mount equipment is the distance
between the flange of the lens
(the part of the case that butts
up against the camera) and the
focal plane of the lens (where the
CCD sensor must be positioned).
This is known as the flange back
distance. On C mount lenses this
is 17.5mm and on CS mount
lenses it is 12.5mm.
Therefore if you have a CS mount
camera and a C mount lens you
can add a 5mm spacer to obtain
the correct focus. If, however, you
have a C mount camera and a CS
mount lens correct focus cannot
be achieved.
Some C mount cameras do allow
you to swap the whole mount
from C to CS or vice versa.

SPOT FILTERS
These increase the working range of a lens and can eliminate Automatic Iris
'Hunting' using a series of darker Neutral Density discs at the iris centre.
Please note: Spot Filters are built into lenses to reduce the sensitivity of the iris
control. As the iris closes down to its smallest size for bright scenes, the
adjustments required are microscopic. Most scenes over 15,000 lux (sunlight)
require an iris closure of 10F stops from a 15 lux scene (a range available on many
lenses). Noon sunlight can range up to 1 million lux requiring an iris range of 16F
stops. The 2nd 'F' stop figure quoted relates to the effective filtered F' stops at
iris closure.

Today, VCRs are considered a mature technology

having been commonly used in a domestic capacity
since the early 80s. Security VCRs, although appearing
the same in product design as domestic recorders, have
a number of additional features specifically for use in
the Security Marketplace. They require an Industrial
Chassis which offers increased durability, tailored to
take the additional stresses and wear and tear expected
when using a VCR continuously rather than the typical
3-4 hours per day in which a domestic machine may be
used.
The principal functional difference is the ability for a
Security VCR to record for at least a 24 hour period.
This is achieved as information is taped periodically
rather than continuously (as in domestic recordings).
Ultimately, this allows your VCR to step camera
recordings (using standard video cassettes) over much
longer periods of time. This has been proven as an
extremely successful method of surveillance
monitoring, both in terms of required footage, albeit
that there is a trade-off between the requirement for
extended recording, and cost efficiency.
The way in which timelapse recording works in practice
is best explained by example:
A standard domestic VCR records continuously in
realtime, with 25 frames per second,
2 fields per frame (a total of 50 images in all). An
industrial machine, on the other hand, has selectable
recording intervals, allowing you to reduce the amount
of information you tape depending on your
requirements. If the record rate is dropped to 8.33
frames per second (16.66 images in total), for example,
the VCR can span recordings to 24 hours worth of
information. In this instance the VCR is said to be
running in 24 hour timelapse mode.
As the recordings in timelapse mode are periodic rather
than continuous, there is a loss in the information taped
in any single sequence (dependent on the settings),
which can give a stroboscopic effect on replay.
Consequently, the configuration of timelapse recording
is very much dependant on the practical needs of the
particular security installation.
The Vista VCR range is a high performance, fully
functional set of recorders tailored to the specific
needs of the Security Industry, offering an extensive
array of features including VEXT input that enables

them to synchronise with Vista multiplexers, allowing

you to change the time modes automatically on the
VCR. Using proven Japanese technology, in combination
with their robust, but aesthetically pleasing Industrial
Chassis design, Vista VCRs guarantee reliability,
performance and style at a price you can afford.
Although its never good news when a product fails, its
nice to know that when things do go wrong, there is a
quick and easy solution to help you get your systems
back on line. That is why all Vista VCRs come with a
unique Customer Care Service Package (UK only)
designed to give you maximum value and peace of mind
on your investment. The Vista range is a solid
investment both now and into the future for any general
purpose security application requiring event replay.
Typical installations include banks, town centres,
casinos, shops, offices and other commercial premises.

TAPE MANAGEMENT
A consideration of tape based recording is that of tape
management. There are recommended guidelines to the
number of times a video cassette can be used before
they will start breaking up (deionizing) and start
clogging the heads. This causes the quality of recording
to degrade every time the tape passes through the
VCR. Tape storage is also an important consideration.
Applications where recordings may be submitted as
evidence will need to be properly stored in a lockable
box. Also, the amount of tapes required in some larger
installations take up a lot of space and need to be
properly managed. A suitable tape lock box is the Vista
VTD31 on page 79.

VISTA VVRL
LITE RANGE OF VCRS

The choice for low cost, reliable

timelapse video recording

The Vista Lite VCR is designed to be functional, reliable yet maintaining a low
cost in keeping with our other Vista Lite products. It has many advanced features,
which wouldnt normally be found in VCRs that are designed for the systems
market.
Its RS232 connectivity allows it to be controlled by our Vista Generation3
multiplexer, which means that the user can house the VCR in a locked cupboard
or another secure room.
Serial connection allows multiple VCRs to be connected so when a pre-designated
time is reached or the tape ends the next unit starts recording. As with other
Vista Lite applications, the VVRL is ideal for smaller installations where budget
must take precedence, but without compromising quality and reliability.

INTUITIVE TAPE MANAGEMENT

Along with the usual features of Vista Timelapse VCR simplistic operation,
robust construction and in-built reliability, the VVR range deals with the
often time consuming element of tape management with its unique "Tape
Management System" which is controlled using the on-screen display menu.
This system will actually recognise a video cassette and only let it pass
thorough the machine a user-determined number of times. This ensures
that old tapes cannot be used with the VCR if the user doesnt want them to
be, thus safeguarding the quality of recording. In addition, the tape
management system also allows tapes to be password protected to avoid
accidental erasure of critical imagery.

UNDERSTANDING
MULTIPLEXERS
Until the late 1980s, users of multicamera systems with the
requirement to record CCTV
pictures for evidential purposes
faced a high cost (one VCR per
camera) as well as a significant
workload in the management of the
large number of videotapes
produced.
The development of timelapse
VCRs (see page 32) and video
multiplexers enabled the recording
of the output of multi-cameras
(typically up to 16) on to a single
videotape and the display of a
number of these cameras on to a
monitor. This enabled an operator
to view several areas
simultaneously and then select an
individual view for more detailed
analysis.

1. Premium feature and

performance multiplexers
incorporating sophisticated
picture management and high
fidelity recordings that are
generally used in larger or critical
surveillance;
2. Entry-level machines that
provide a more basic range of
features and fulfil the requirement
for cost effective, non-critical
surveillance.

SIMPLEX

For example, if there is movement

in camera 3, the multiplexer can
be programmed to record camera
3 for a longer period, or change
the recording sequence from:
1, 2, 3, 4, 5
to
3, 1, 3, 2, 3, 4, 3, 5, 3
This makes the multiplexer a more
effective tool for recording critical
evidence.

ALARM HANDLING

Simplex machines operate in

record only, replay only or display
live multi-screens. They are
commonly used in unmanned
systems where the recordings of
historical events are required, e.g.
dud cheque was passed at a
certain time or a theft occurred.

Most multiplexers accept alarm

inputs from other devices such as
intruder alarms, door contacts
and fire alarms to call up cameras
relevant to that event. Advanced
multiplexers have sophisticated
software packages to allow
bespoke requirements to be
fulfilled.

DUPLEX

BUILT-IN TELEMETRY

The video multiplexer

revolutionised the CCTV market
making surveillance more
affordable and has been one of the
key drivers in expanding CCTV
usage.

The most common use for duplex

machines is to continuously
record information while an
operator monitors the live multiscreen display.

HOW DO THEY WORK?

If an additional VCR is used then a

triplex machine can record and
display a mixture of live and
playback images simultaneously.

Advanced machines may

incorporate telemetry control
software enabling pan/tilt/zoom
cameras and domes to be
operated from the multiplexer,
making the unit the heart of a
sophisticated CCTV system as well
as reducing both the cost and
clutter in the control room.

CCTV cameras do not produce

continuous picture flows, in fact
they give 50 pictures (PAL, CCIR)
or 60 pictures (NTSC, EIA) per
second. A multiplexer acts like a
very fast switcher taking individual
pictures from each camera in turn.
If 10 cameras are connected to a
conventional VCR only 1/10th of the
information from each camera will
be recorded. This is one of the
reasons why replayed multiplexer
pictures have a stroboscope
appearance.

DEVELOPMENTS
The use of multiplexers has
expanded rapidly and developed
into two main streams:

TRIPLEX

ACTIVITY DETECTION
Advanced multiplexers are able to
analyse picture content from
individual cameras and detect
scene changes such as people
movement.
This movement detection can be
used to prioritise which cameras
will be recorded and how
frequently.

NETWORKING
Complex sites may include large
numbers of cameras, multiple
control points, significant
distances across the site and
incorporate high-speed domes and
video transmission.
Advanced multiplexers incorporate
RS232 and/or RS485 data ports
for remote control and system
integration.

GENERATION 3
MULTIPLEXER RANGE

The Generation3 range has been engineered to meet the

needs of the end user and installer. Premium performance
richly featured and networkable, Generation 3 multiplexers
provide the solution to virtually any multiplexer requirement,
yet have been designed with user-friendly operation in mind.
Available as duplex models, the attractive case has been
ergonomically designed to provide a platform for a monitor
support but is equally suitable for rack mounting.
With all the features you would expect to find in top of the
range multiplexers, Generation3 models remain easy to
operate, with an ergonomic keyboard design (optional remote
keyboard available) and drop down menus for intuitive
function control.
Designed to meet the needs of the most rigorous systems,
Generation3 multiplexers incorporate features useful for
your day-to-day needs, such as VCR control via the keyboard
and password protected menus at different levels, permitting
separate staff and installer/system manager-only access. All
units have loop through auto terminating video inputs.

PVP:
A non Parallel Video Processor (PVP) multiplexer has only
one encoder. This means that due to the way video signals
are made up, it takes 20 milli-seconds to read the video
signal and a further 20 milli-seconds to output this signal
(giving a total of 40 milli-seconds). This means that the
number of unique fields that it can process in a signal
second is 25.
A multiplexer with PVP has two encoders which operate
independently; one can read video signal whilst the other is
outputting video signal. This effectively halves the workload
of the encoders ensuring that a maximum of 50 unique
fields can be processed in a signal second. This ultimately
improves live video refresh and record rates.

THINGS TO CONSIDER:
Remember, that the more cameras per
multiplexer and the larger the timelapse
speed, the greater the chance of missing
events.

FOR SMALLER CCTV INSTALLATIONS, QUADS

OFFER A COST EFFECTIVE SOLUTION FOR
THE CONTROL ROOM...

THERE ARE A NUMBER OF FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN SELECTING

A QUAD

Smaller CCTV systems often

require the ability to display or
record images from up to 4
cameras, simultaneously. Quads
operate by taking the output from
cameras, digitising the signal
before displaying the images on to
a single monitor or providing a
single video output for a VCR.
Quads are available in a number of
formats and to varying
specifications. They are commonly
produced as standalone units
which can then be combined with
monitors and VCRs to provide an
effective, low cost surveillance
system. The additional facilities
that quads offer over traditional
switchers has made them a popular
choice for smaller systems. This
demand has in turn driven down
manufacturers costs such that
entry level products now compete
favourably with switchers.

1. UPDATE SPEED
This is how frequently
images update. The nearer
to real-time
the better. Typically,
faster update speed
machines are relatively
more expensive.

3. ABILITY TO DISPLAY
FULL SCREEN
Low-end Quads often only
record and display in quad
format. The facility to
also display single camera
pictures from playback is
useful and normally
found in the more
sophisticated machines.

2. RESOLUTION
Generally the higher the
resolution of the unit the
clearer the images will be
desplayed.
displayed.

4. TIME AND DATE

CHARACTER GENERATION
More sophisticated quads
provide the facility to
insert text and time/date
information on to the
recording. This is
particularly useful for
evidential purposes.

DIGITAL VIDEO RECORDERS (DVRS) REPRESENT

THE NEW STANDARD IN CCTV RECORDING.
SUCH IS THE IMAGE QUALITY AND FLEXIBILITY OF
THESE UNITS THEY HAVE QUICKLY BECOME THE
RECORDING SOLUTION FOR SECURITY
APPLICATIONS.

The late 1980s saw the introduction of

video multiplexers offering users the
facility to record pictures on to a single
video tape, eliminating the need for
VCRs dedicated to recording a single
camera output. The use of timelapse
VCRs as a storage medium for those
images is well known, as are their
inevitable drawbacks introduction of
noise, wear and tear and the simple
requirement that the tape needs to be
rewound to access information. In a
practical situation the reviewing of
tapes to secure the important face
shot or scene of crime can involve
long and tedious work. The late 1990s
saw the emergence of Hard Disk
Recorders (HDRs) that are essentially
multiplexers with a computer hard disk
memory to store images. HDRs are
excellent at reproducing high quality
images with little noise or picture
degradation and are extremely efficient
in calling up an alarmed picture. A
problem that HDRs face, however, is
that computer memory is still relatively
expensive compared with a storage
medium such as a VCR tape.
The struggle for many HDR
manufacturers has been to produce a
machine that provides the features and
performance required with sufficient
memory to make it a practical machine
at a realistic price. Most HDRs use
JPEG compression which requires
significant memory to store
information. However, Wavelets
compression technology is less memory
hungry and allows more information to
be stored on a hard disk, meaning more
recorded images can be stored cost
effectively.
HDR technology is advancing rapidly
and promises to revolutionise the ease
of retrieval and quality of video
information, having an equally dramatic
effect on the CCTV market that
multiplexers had in the early 1990s.

Vista Columbus is a high quality simple

to use digital video multiplexer and
hard disk video recorder combined.
Since the launch of the Columbus in
1998, this extremely powerful and
popular machine has developed into the
latest offering the Triplex Columbus,
the most advanced cost effective digital
video multiplex recorder available on
the market today.
All units support connection to Ethernet
networks and are supplied with a copy
of the WaveReader software to run on
any associated Windows 95/98/NT
PC. Using this software you can view
either live pictures or playback from the
Columbus Hard Disk while
simultaneously recording. The
WaveReader software allows you to
save video clips to the PC Hard Disk or
CDRW for subsequent playback or
distribution via e-mail. Still pictures can
be saved in both JPEG and BMP
formats.
Using the latest Wavelets compression
technology, the Columbus has the
ability to record consistent, high fidelity
colour pictures to a resolution greater
than SVHS standard. The unit records in
conventional timelapse modes, including
event, realtime 12 hour through to 960
hours timelapse at the update rates
commonly associated with a VCR and
multiplexer combination. When
emulating a 24 hour VHS timelapse
video recorder, for example, the Vista
Columbus can genuinely record up to 31
days on to the hard disk. The images
from Vista Columbus memory can also
be downloaded to a CDRW (CD
read/write) to produce an archive for
future reference.
The Hard Disk Recorder has been
designed to emulate the ease of use
and functionality of a multiplexer, VCR
and telemetry controller. Featuring push
button controls and Windows pulldown menus, Columbus offers maximum

flexibility, customisable to your specific

needs alllowing full integration with
industry standard equipment, as well as
being extremely friendly for users.
Equipment can be supported remotely,
with technical information and advice
available from our website, where you
will also find the most recent
downloadable upgrades to ensure your
system fully benefits from the on-going
research and development in the digital
arena.
As the Security Industry and Police
forces push to improve both the quality
of the recorded image and the ease of
access to archived material, digital
recording has become recognised as the
ultimate solution. Consequently, the
Vista Columbus range is perfectly
suited for applications as diverse as
shopping centres, casinos, financial
institutions, correctional facilities,
commercial and industrial premises.
The application of the Digital Video
Management System is literally
anywhere an analogue video multiplexer
and VCR have been traditionally used.
The sophisticated network capabilities
of the Vista Columbus range enables
integration with CCTV products, e.g.
high speed domes and video
transmission; electronic article
surveillance and access control
systems. This flexibility arises due to
the open architecture of Vista products,
enabling users to select equipment from
a number of manufacturers who share
the philosophy of open systems.

SIMPLE OR DETAILED SEARCH

MORE THAN 31 DAYS RECORDING AVAILABLE IN ONE BOX
PVP - 50 Pictures per Second
Parallel Video Processing is used within
the Triplex Columbus unit. This
technique employs two sample chips
which are used simultaneously to
provide faster update record rates. The
maximum record rate of the Triplex
Columbus is 50 pictures per second.

Record Timer / Scheduler

A simple schedule is available within
the Columbus menu allowing record
times to be pre-programmed. On / Off
times can be programmed for each day
of the month, each day of the week
and weekends. Macros can be linked to
these schedules, thus allowing many
functions to be scheduled.

Video Motion Search on Playback

This powerful search tool, allows users
to search for motion on recorded
images. Simply define an area within the
image and Motion Search will search the
whole hard disk for movement in this
area. Simply finding incidents without
knowing when they occurred.

Improved Video Motion

Detection Set-up
On the monitor, detection zones are
darkened if disabled and remain
normal if they are enabled. The
Enable/Disable zones indicator is also
much clearer, using a check mark to
indicate enable zone, and "X" to
indicate disable zone.

Auto Install
The Columbus unit will automatically
scan all the video inputs on initial power
up. Inputs will then be assigned colour
or monochrome depending upon input
type. If video signals are not present on
all inputs, then the appropriate inputs
will be automatically disabled. The
Columbus unit will always return to the
mode it was in when down powered.
Upon initial power up the unit will
automatically go into record mode. Thus
making installation quick and easy with
minimal program setting requirements
in order to get a basic system
operational.
Input scanning
The Triplex Columbus unit scans every
field automatically in order to assign the
video input channels as colour or
monochrome. This feature ensures that
all models of switch-able colour /
monochrome camera are compatible
with the unit.
Record Lock
From within the Columbus main menu a
record lock can be activated. The only
way to stop recording is to switch off
the record lock from within the menu,
before stopping recording from the
front keyboard.

Two types of search are available

on the Triplex Columbus.
Simple Search by colour coded
Disk Analysis Screen, allows a user
to quickly monitor the systems
activity. A graphical representation
of the Columbus units hard disk
allows archived video to be found
effortlessly.
The zoom allows users to zoom 3
times from the original date/time
window, for a total of 4 levels.
Users can go directly to any
time/date very quickly using this
screen, which we believe is the
best in the industry for search
from the unit front panel.

Motion locality is indicated during setup. All the zones with activity that
exceeds current sensitivity setting are
highlighted for the time that the
sensitivity is exceeded.
VMD set-up can also now be done via
WaveReader software over an Ethernet
network.
Future Proof - Up-gradable
Triplex Columbus units are available
in single or dual hard disk variants.
Single hard disk units can be upgraded
to incorporate another internal hard
disk at a later date, if so desired.
Norbains workshop services are able
to provide upgrades.
Flash
It is now possible to flash upgrade
Triplex Columbus units over an
Ethernet network from a remotely
connected PC, utilising internet
explorer browser software. When
connected simply select the units IP
address to view The Vista Triplex
Columbus Home Page. Columbus Menu
Software development is on-going,
therefore your unit can always
upgraded as new functions and
features become available.

A Detailed Search is also available.

Video archive can be searched by
time and date, camera number,
activity, event, alarm or text.

VISTA VAIDe
ARCHIVING SOLUTION

The Vista Array of Independent Disks

/ Ethernet (VAIDe) delivers more
storage capacity, functionality and
performance at a lower price, than
any other system on the market
today.
The VAIDe can hold from between
two and eight hard disk drives within
its chassis. Hard disk drives are
increasing in size all the time. If
installed with eight 250GB Hard disk
drives, the VAIDe will provide
2000GB of storage space in total.

This equates to approximately six

months of recording time at an
update rate 5 pictures per second
(equivalent to 24 hour mode).
Upgrading is easy. Start with the
storage you need and should you
wish to expand the system up to the
maximum eight disks, then simply
purchase additional hard disk drives.
Vistas workshop services are able to
provide upgrades, although this is
easily achieved in the field.

The VDC1604 from Vista is an

extremely cost effective, feature
packed matrix offering the end
user many of the sophisticated
features previously found
exclusively within larger, far more
expensive alternative matrices.
Additionally, with 8 in-built timed
functions, each connected monitor
can be set to display a different
view or sequence at predetermined
times of the day or night. This is
extremely useful in satisfying
individual site specific
requirements.
Regardless of the complexity of
features included within the unit,
the VDC1604 is exceptionally easy
to install. The unit s Auto Set-Up
feature searches for the number of
cameras connected to the system
automatically, identifying the
camera type -colour or mono, prior
to finalising the installation. This
element has been designed-in to
save valuable time during system
installation, and is just one of the
many reasons why the VDC1604 is
the preferred choice for many of
todays professional security
installers.

KEY FEATURES:

CHOOSING THE RIGHT MONITOR IS AS IMPORTANT

AS CHOOSING THE RIGHT CAMERA. THERE ARE A
NUMBER OF FACTORS TO TAKE INTO
CONSIDERATION WHEN DECIDING ON THE
CORRECT MONITOR TO USE FOR AN
APPLICATION...

Today, monitors are available in a vast array of sizes,

resolutions and aesthetic designs; with options in
monochrome and colour, to enable a wide range of
applications and budgets to be met. When considering
the most appropriate monitor for a particular security
application, a number of factors may determine the
selection.

A) THE PHYSICAL DISTANCE AVAILABLE FROM

THE PLACEMENT OF THE MONITOR TO THE
VIEWER
Often, in manned surveillance operations, a viewer is
expected to concentrate on one or more monitors for
long periods of time. To protect both the health and
safety interests of the operator and to ensure that they
remain alert to potential incidents, guidelines have been
established to determine the Optimum Viewing
Distances.

Family styling
Case colour options
Wide range of screen sizes
High resolution

C) THE LEVEL OF VIEWING DETAIL REQUIRED

For high quality manned surveillance systems, where
there is a requirement to view high resolution pictures
as well as record images, then a high resolution monitor
with Y/C inputs is advisable.

D) THE NEED TO SHOW COLOUR OR

MONOCHROME IMAGES
Colour monitors are advantageous in applications where
identification is important, e.g. someone wearing a red
jumper and blue jeans can be identified more effectively
on a colour monitor than someone who appears dressed
in dark grey on a monochrome monitor.
However, if budget is a concern or usage means that
low light camera viewing is required, a monochrome
monitor may be more appropriate.

E) WHETHER AUDIO IS REQUIRED

OPTIMUM VIEWING DISTANCES

A simple model is available to help calculate the
optimum viewing distance of the viewer to the monitor.

9-15

1.4-2.2

B) THE AMOUNT OF PHYSICAL SPACE

AVAILABLE
Due to the wide range of monitor sizes in the
marketplace today, it is important to consider the
available space for your installation. There is no point
buying a 21" monitor when there is only space for a 14"
model. It is also worth taking a long-term view and
considering other factors such as heat and room
ventilation. As a security installation develops, there
may be a requirement to incorporate additional
monitors.

Not all monitors have audio capabilities. Consequently,

it is a feature that needs to be specified in advance,
especially in applications in staff protection for
example.

F) THE AVAILABLE BUDGET

Price variations in monitors arise for different reasons
dependant on whether a monochrome or colour monitor
is required. The majority of monochrome monitors
today are supplied with high resolution CRTs.
Consequently price differences in these models simply
tend to reflect the screen size. Colour monitor pricing,
on the other hand, is determined by both resolution and
screen size. However, as a result of the vast quantity of
14" monitors that are currently produced for the PC
market, the Security Industry has been able to offer 14"
high resolution colour displays at extremely affordable
prices.

VISTA TVe
COLOUR MONITOR
RANGE

The TVe range of monitors is born from the design of

domestic televisions, but without the tuner. Instead we have
made some professional modifications to the specification
making them suitable for CCTV use. This adaptation still
allows a pricing advantage gained from the huge
manufacturing volumes that are available from the similar
consumer product. Offering a standard resolution of 350 TVL
and housed in a plastic casing, the range is extremely cost
effective and ideal for budget conscious, non-critical
applications.

14" and 21" units are available and incorporate on-screen

display (OSD) menus for quick and easy set-up. With audio
capability and a resolution of 350TVL, these monitors are
suitable for a wide range of applications, especially those
within locations frequented by the general public.

CCTV IS GETTING SMART. THE LATEST SOLUTIONS

IN REMOTE TRANSMISSION GIVE YOU ALL THE
ADVANTAGES OF REMOTE MONITORING COMBINED
WITH THE REASSURANCE OF ALWAYS KNOWING
WHAT IS GOING ON...

The Vista Smart range is a suite

of products specifically designed
to facilitate the transmission of
video images over
communications networks. This
will allow an end user operator to
remotely view and control their
cameras, from just about
anywhere in the world.
The ability to send video across
telephone networks is not a new
concept, in fact it has been
available for a number of years
now. However, it has only been
relatively recently, with the
advent of new digital telephone
networks and increased
performance in video compression
technology, that this form of
CCTV surveillance opportunity has
been fully explored.
Vista has designed their Smart
products to be adaptable for any
transmission medium, allowing the
user to select full frame
transmission (send the complete
image every time), or conditional
refresh transmission (send only
the changes within the image).

BENEFITS:
Remote monitoring via Vista
Smart products, presents end
users with all the benefits of
manned guarding 24 hours a day,
seven days a week. Remote
installations can now be provided
with a watertight surveillance
umbrella from the comfort of a
single control room. This
obviously represents a substantial
financial saving for the end user.

HOW DO THEY WORK?

Vista Smart products will accept
any standard composite video
input. The units then take this
analogue video signal and digitise
it, ready to send in a data format.
This digital image is then
transmitted to a receiving location
upon activation of an alarm, or on
demand by a remote operator.
At the receiving (monitoring)
location sits a PC running Vista
SmartTel receiving software. This
simple to operate, end user
friendly intuitive solution, allows
automated response to remote
alarm activations. Having the
choice of either manually
connecting to any site, or being
provided with prompts, the
operator has access and control to
remote PTZ / Dome cameras at
will. Additionally, Vista SmartTel4
will allow 4 different remote
locations to be monitored
simultaneously by just one
operator from a single PC.
Received video information is then
stored on the PCs hard drive for
later review, hard copy print out,
or email use by the operator.

ISDN Integrated Services Digital

Network
TCP/IP Transmit Control
Protocol / Internet Protocol
LAN Local Area Network
WAN Wide Area Network
It is important to remember that
whichever network is used for
transmission, the image quality
will remain the same. However, the
speed of transmission will be
dependent upon which medium is
selected. GSM usage is generally
considered the slowest allowing
standard transmission speeds of
9600baud, with TCP/IP being the
fastest by providing up to 10Mb
bandwidth.
To cater for this difference in
transmission speed, users are able
to select different image qualities
for transmission. This facility in
turn allows for the faster
transmission of relevant
information. For example, a lower
quality image can be transmitted
far faster than a high quality
image, as less data is required to
be sent

Images can be transmitted over
many different, readily available
communications networks:

EASY TO USE TRANSMISSION

The Vista SmartTel has been designed to provide fast
transmission of high quality colour or monochrome
images via ISDN, PSTN, GSM or TCP/IP (LAN/WAN)
communication networks allowing the remote monitoring
of camera locations virtually anywhere in the world.
Available in 10 or 2 camera input versions, the Vista
SmartTel allows transmission of full frame or conditional
refresh JPEG images, allowing the user to maximise the
bandwidth available for transmission.

SmartTel

Integrated memory provides a buffer for pre-alarm

images for alarm verification, and remote control is
provided for dome and PTZ cameras via the VLS-DCM
(10 channel VLS-TR only).
With automated dial out on alarm or remote observation
on demand of the operator, coupled with the ability to
remotely control barriers / gates via the units relay
outputs, the Vista SmartTel is an effective and extremely
powerful remote monitoring tool.

camera digital video recorders are
designed around a removable HDD
that uses JPEG compression
technology.

Export of pictures

The Vista SmartDisc employs a

user-friendly reviewing software
which is operated in a Windows
environment and includes many
menu functions that are not
available on a standard VCR.
This Software allows you to review
the hard drive in simplex mode, and
view live images while still
recording.

The Standard Vista SmartDisc is

capable of working with the Vista
SmartLan adaptor allowing access
to a TCP/IP network. Access can
also be gained via the telephone
line using a modem or terminal
adaptor.
With automated dial out on alarm or
remote observation on demand of
the operator, coupled with the
ability to remotely control
barriers/gates via the units relay
outputs, the Vista SmartDisc is an
effective and extremely powerful
remote monitoring tool.

When we talk about CCTV hardware,

what we are generally referring to are
housings, pan/tilt heads and the
brackets to support these.
Housings, in essence, are casings used
to protect cameras from a variety of
conditions, dependent on the
environment in which they are
mounted.
Pan/tilt heads are fixtures, to which
housings and/or cameras are
attached: allowing remote positioning
of both direction and zoom lens
functions. Brackets are available in a
wide range of types to permit the
mounting of cameras, housings and
pan/tilts to a variety of building
structures.
HOUSINGS
At first sight, most camera housings
may seem similar. In practice, to
ensure the optimum appearance and
performance appropriate for a camera
installation, a number of factors have
to be taken into consideration:
1. Location.
2. Risk of vandalism.
3. The total load weight of the housing
and constituent elements (including
camera, lens and any other equipment
encased within, the hanging bracket
and fixing surface).
4. The housing chosen has sufficient
physical space for the camera, lens
(which may have to be changed at a
later stage), electrical wiring and
enough room to make the connections
and allow for future maintenance.
5. Try to use aluminium or rust-proof
products. Steel is more vulnerable to
the elements and will rust in time!
6. Housings should only be mounted
on to load bearing points.
7. It is recommended that the top 5 or
6 levels of brickwork on buildings are
avoided when mounting a camera
housing.
Environmental conditions are also a
primary consideration in selecting an
appropriate housing for a camera

2nd IP DEGREE OF PROTECTION

DIGIT

system, but often one which is not

given the due attention. As a result, a
housing may not give the level of
protection required in its specific
application wasting time, money and
effort. If a camera is to be mounted
externally in a coastal location, for
example, the housing will require a
marine finish to protect against the
damaging effects of salt which can
induce premature corrosion.
Climatic effects also need to be
considered. Rising and falling
temperatures can dramatically effect
the workings of electrical equipment
and as a result requires pro-active
consideration. In hot conditions, the
severity of the sun may require the
use of air blowers and sun shields to
maintain the temperature of the
camera at an optimum level and
ensure clear viewing. Conversely, in
cold conditions, it may be that a
camera requires a heater and
thermostat built into the housing. In
rainy conditions, wipers may be
required to keep the housing glass
clear to maintain the cameras viewing
quality.
The standard for the degree of
protection that housings afford to its
contents is defined by the IP system
above.
PAN / TILT HEADS
Broadly categorised into internal and
external usage, pan/tilts are normally
selected on the basis of the maximum
load they can take. This of course will
dramatically vary from application to
application. Careful consideration is
required to ensure the total weight of
the housing, camera, lens, Infra Red
lamps and any other equipment
featured in the installation does not
exceed the load rating.
BRACKETS
A wide range of brackets is available
to allow CCTV hardware to be
mounted in a variety of situations.
Brackets available include wall mount,
corner mount, ceiling mount and pole
mount. The main principle in selecting
the most appropriate bracket for a

DEFINITION

camera installation is based upon load

weight. It is vital to ensure that a
bracket loading does not exceed the
total weight of the equipment that is
mounted upon it. Furthermore, if the
system is mounted externally, it is
important to account for additional
weight and pressure excerpted from
the elements such as snow and wind.
INFRA RED LAMPS
Infra red lamps (IR) essentially allow
black and white cameras to see in the
dark. This results from the infra-red
illumination provided by the lamps,
which is difficult to be seen by the
human eye. Broadly speaking, there
are 2 main types of IR lights: 715nM
and 830nM. The 715nM filters pass the
most amount of light and can be seen
by most people as a red glow. 830nM
filters pass less light and consequently
provide a shorter viewing distance.
However, as a result they are less
visible to the human eye and thus
more effective for covert usage.
MONITOR BRACKETS
When choosing a monitor bracket it is
important to ensure that it will
support the load of the monitor safely
and hold the monitor in place
correctly. All Vista monitor brackets
are designed with specific Vista
monitors in mind to make the choice
less complicated.
LOCKABLE BOXES
Designed to help with tape
management and protect critical
control hardware (such as VCRs and
Hard Disk Recorders), lockable boxes
are a must where there is a threat
that CCTV equipment may be
interfered with.
CABLE
An often overlooked part of a CCTV
system. Cable comes in a variety of
types for a variety of exacting
applications.

Marine finish
These stylish housings have been thoughtfully designed, so not
only do they look good, but they are also very easy to fit and
service. They have been made to the highest standards and
conform to European and British standards IP66. They are pretreated with a weatherproof epoxy coating, ensuring that they
are fully protected making them ideal for demanding
environments, such as saline and coastal applications.
Furthermore, the protective coating prevents damage caused by
UV radiation, ensuring the paint finish retains its appearance
over a much longer period of time.
Each casing has an integral heater and thermostat to monitor
changes in weather conditions, while a separate aluminium sun
shield also ensures that the housing is kept cool when the
temperature rises. The housings also incorporate an integral
bracket through which the cables can be fed ensuring a more
secure installation, but also one that is aesthetically pleasing.
The VCMH bracket provides totally discreet cable management
whereas the VSCMH bracket offers a semi-discreet solution.
They also feature a slide and hang servicing facility. The top of
the housing, when unsecured, slides forward and then hangs
below the housing body giving you maximum accessibility to the
camera inside, without removing the sunshield. The full and
easy access to the camera and lens enables final adjustments,
such as focusing and subsequent servicing. There are also flat
sided versions available, to provide an alternative in design
aesthetics.

LOCKABLE BOXES
ADDED SECURITY FOR CRITICAL CCTV EQUIPMENT AND VIDEO
TAPES
At the heart of any mid to high end CCTV system will be either a multiplexer
and VCR, or Digital Video Recorder, which could become the target of an
attack by criminals or subject to tampering. To combat this threat the Vista
VLB range of lockable boxes has been developed to a high specification,
allowing access to control equipment when unlocked, but a safe and secure
environment when locked.
The VTD31 unit allows both the safe storage of video tapes, as well as the
effective management of up to 31 video cassettes.
All Vista lockable boxes are built to the highest standards. Designed for
their specific operations, they offer the correct level of ventilation and
space for equipment and wiring.

VISTA
RANGE OF CABLES

Vistas cable offering is designed to give a high quality

option for todays security professional. Designed
specifically for CCTV use, all our cable is UV protected
for extra long life.
Using poor quality cable can result in a noisy picture
with interference and cross talk. As a rule of thumb,
typical RG59 coaxial cable runs should not exceed 250
metres to ensure a good quality picture. If exceptionally
long cable runs are required, a video amplifier will be
needed at one, or both ends of the cable.
Electromagnetic interference (EMI) can be induced into
coaxial cables running in close proximity to high voltage
or high current carry cables. This may cause hum bars
in the picture and degrade image quality. Because of
this, the installation of video cables next to high voltage
cables is not recommended.
A CCTV system has to be capable of handling signals
that can be at a nominal 5Mhz and above in frequency.
The coaxial cables in common use exhibit resistive
characteristics at such frequencies. The effect of this in
real life is to attenuate or reduce the video signal
slightly. This attenuation increases with cable length
and is commonly measured in decibels (dB). Generally,
2dB loss will leave approximately 80% of the Signal
unaffected.

GLOSSARY OF TERMS
AUTO IRIS (AI)
An electronic circuit fitted to the iris of a lens to
help compensate for large changes in light
levels.
ALARM SEARCH
Search criteria, e.g. time, date etc. used to
detect alarms from CCTV input signals.
AUTOMATIC LEVEL CONTROL (ALC)
On auto iris lenses, also known as peak/average
control. Adjusting this control allows the auto
iris circuitry to either take bright spots more
into consideration (peak), bringing out the detail
in bright areas, or less into consideration
(average) bringing out detail in shadows.
ANALOGUE
A signal in which any level is represented by a
directly proportional voltage not digital.
ANGLE OF VIEW
This is what alters (not the focal length) when
you use a lens designed for one format on
another format. It decreases with format size.
APERTURE
The opening of a lens, a measure of its light
gathering capability. Relative aperture is a ratio
between its focal length and effective aperture,
measured in F numbers, generally the lower the
better.
ARCHIVE
Automated process to back-up information from
the hard disk.
AUTO WHITE BALANCE
A feature on a colour camera whereby the light
is constantly monitored and adjusts the colour
to maintain the white areas.
BACK FOCUS

wider you set the aperture of a lens the lower
the depth of field becomes.
DVMS
Digital Video Management System.
EVENT
External alarm triggers recorded by a VCR
running in timelapse mode.

E180HQ
Denotes a 3 hour, high quality video cassette
high quality in that there is reduced oxidisation
on the heads offering increased picture quality
and longevity of tape usage.
E240HQ
Denotes a 4 hour, high quality video cassette (as
above).
ELECTRONIC IRIS (EI)
Automatically varies a CCD cameras shutter to
mimic auto iris control, allowing fixed or manual
iris lens to be used in a wider range of areas.
EIA (Electronic Industry Association)
US TV standard 525 lines in 60 fields.
ENCODED
Transferred information in a coded form to a
medium.
EXT. SYNC (EXTERNAL SYNC)
The ability of CCTV equipment (normally
cameras), to accept one or more of the
standard sync formats so as to align itself to
the rest of the system.
FIELD
One half of a frame, consisting of either the odd
or the even numbered lines. 50 fields are
transmitted every second.
FRAME
One complete TV picture made up of
approximately 625 lines. 25 frames are
transmitted every second.
GALVANOMETRIC (GALVOMETRIC)
One method of converting the small electric
currents produced by auto iris circuits into
physical movement of the iris diaphragm. Used
in both auto iris and direct drive lenses.
GIGABYTE (GB)
One billion bytes or characters of information.
HARD DISK
The non-removable disk in a computer. The disk
stores data and information to be used on a PC.
HOLIDAY CODE
A VCR timer feature that allows you to assign
the Sunday timer settings to up to 20 week
days per year. Normally used for Bank holidays.
INTERLEAVING
Method used with alarms or activity detection
which allows extra frames of video from
alarmed cameras to be added to a time
multiplexed sequence whilst a state of alarm
exists.
IRIS (IRIS DIAPHRAGM)
Adjustable diaphragm that regulates the
amount of light passing through a lens.
JPEG (JOINT PHOTOGRAPHIC EXPERT
GROUPS)
A compression technique which has been widely
used in the Security Industry.
LUX
Metric measures of the light striking a surface.
The light available on that surface depends on
how reflective it is.
MACRO
Feature allowing you to pre-programme
frequently used system configurations for
selection by a single keystroke or optionally by
alarm inputs.
MEGABYTE (MB)
One million bytes or characters of information.
MPEG (MOVING PICTURE EXPERT GROUPS)
A compression technique which has been widely
used in entertainment media.
MULTIPLEX (TIME MULTIPLEX)
Using one carrier to send more than one signal.
In video multiplexers, achieving this by sending
a different cameras output in each successive
field or frame of a video signal, in a form that
can later be retrieved as single camera pictures.
NTSC (NATIONAL TELEVISION STANDARDS
COMMITTEE. SEE EIA)
Colour TV system used in the USA.

PAL (PHASE ALTERNATIVE LINE. SEE CCIR)

UK Colour TV system.
PIR (PASSIVE INFRA RED)
A range of frequencies lower than visible red
light used for covert surveillance or as a low
cost wireless video link.
PRESETS
The pre-positioning of pan/tilt and zoom
cameras by the use of potentiometers in the
moving parts of the camera head. These allow
the control equipment to store and move to a
set reference point when the controller dictates
or when an alarm exists. Special telemetry
equipment is required.
PVP (PARALLEL VIDEO PROCESSING)
Multiplexer dual framestore that gives near
realtime record capability in 3 hour mode and
improves multi-screen updates by 50%.
REALTIME
The actual time during which a process or event
occurs.
RS232
A data communication industry standard for the
serial transmission of information. Distance
without modems is limited.
RS485
A data communication industry standard for the
component transmission of information.
SHUTTER
An electronic circuit available on many CCD
cameras. Allowing the light gathering period
(1/50th of a second) of the camera to be
stopped prematurely (as little as 1/100,000th of
a second).
SVHS (SUPER VIDEO HOME SYSTEM)
New format, high resolution VHS video
recorders, capable of giving greatly improved
picture quality when all features are used. It is
also compatible with VHS.
TIMELAPSE VCR
Video recorder that can record frames with
pauses between them thereby extending the
time that a standard length tape will last.
TVL (TELEVISION LINES RESOLUTION)
The maximum number of changes between light
and dark on a picture across 3/4 of the width
dictates the resolution of a CCTV product,
measured in TVL.
UP-DATE RATE
The rate which equates to the number of field
updates that a VCR and multiplexer would make
when connected together in a standard
application, e.g. a standard VCR will use a 3
hour videotape, recording 50 fields a second.
However, when a VCR is configured to a 24 hour
timelapse mode, the updates are slowed by a
factor of 8, recording 6.25 fields a second
(which on playback gives a slight stroboscopic
effect).
VAC
Voltage alternative current.
VCR
Video Cassette Recorder.
VDC
Voltage direct current.
VEXT (HEAD PULSE SWITCHING)
