ex-filtration into wastewater or stormwater systems, and are installed
in the precast structure in a way that does not require coring or
placement after the base component is cast. This eliminates residual
waste from coring, disposal of the slugs or wasted raw material
utilization or energy. Once cast-in, the connector becomes an integral
component of the structure wall.
ALOK Premium has demonstrated in tests that it will meet and
exceed 13 psi of hydrostatic water pressure.

MATERIAL
Extruded from compounds formulated for wastewater applications
and engineered to conform to the requirements of
section 4.1.1 of ASTM C-923, the standard rubber connector is
available in alternative compounds upon request. Contact an ALOK
representative regarding special applications, such as the presence of
hydrocarbons.

KEY ADVANTAGES
The external appearance of the ALOK Premium connector appears to
be a standard connector, but under differential loading or pipe deflection
it will instantaneously react and redistribute its visco-elastic dynamic
core material to maintain its circumferential sealing pressure. This
visco-elasticity behavior is made possible by introducing a blend of
environmentally friendly fibers, binders, polymers and congealing agents
into the connector core which provides a controllable and dynamic
viscose fluid within the connector. In most installations, this material will
remain equally distributed throughout the core of the connector provided
proper pipe bedding practices have taken place. In the event that shortterm or long-term settlement of the pipe begins to occur, the core

material will react by redistributing and equalizing the blended materials

to maintain its proper sealing compression.
A specific combination of fibers and congealing agents have been
selected to prevent the escape or loss of material through absorption or
from minor punctures or tears that could occur during the initial coupling
of the connector and during its service life.
Benefits and advantages include:
1. Functioning on pure compression, the ALOK Premium allows for
fast and easy field installation. After the pipe is beveled and the
connector and pipe are cleaned and lubricated, the pipe is simply
centered in the connector and inserted. Backfilling can be done
immediately, thus enhancing project safety and overcoming the
typical problems of water, running sand and other unstable trench
conditions.
2. Efficient geometry of the profile lowers the coupling force required to
insert the pipe into both radius and flat wall connector designs.
Lower coupling force translates into quicker and easier installation.
3. Increased nominal pipe diameter tolerance over conventional
compression connector designs while still maintaining up to 10
degrees of omnidirectional axial deflection.
4. Dynamic self-sealing core material can compensate for changes in
dimensions and physical eccentricity.
5. Available in a range of sizes from 8 through 48 utilizing existing
ALOK mandrels.
6. Backed by standard A-LOK Watertight Guarantee.
7. Like other ALOK connectors on larger-diameter pipe where size
prohibits a gasket from being installed in a flat plane, the ALOK
Premium can be configured for casting in a curve with the connector
staying perpendicular to the center line of the pipe. Discovered
through years of extensive research and development, this
configuration causes no loss of compression or deflection.

PIPE TO STRUCTURE CONNECTOR FOR STORMWATER SYSTEMS

ALOK STM
ALOK STM

PRODUCT REFERENCES
A.) ASTM C-1478

The ALOK STM is a

flexible pipe-to-manhole connector
designed for the prevention of soil and
water infiltration into
stormwater sewer
systems. It can be
used with both round
and elliptical shaped
pipes and curved and
flat wall structures. It
is available for 8"
diameter and larger
pipes.

MATERIAL
The standard connector is extruded from a polyisoprene compound
engineered to conform with the requirements outlined in section
4.1.1 of ASTM C-1478 Standard Specification for Storm Drain
Resilient Connectors Between Reinforced Concrete Storm Sewer
Structures, Pipes, and Laterals. Alternative compounds are available for unusual applications upon special order.

TEST

KEY ADVANTAGES
The ALOK STM Connector functions on pure compression, making
field installation quick and easy. Just clean and lubricate the connector
and pipe, center the pipe in the connector, and insert. This rapid installation permits immediate backfilling, enhancing project safety and overcomes the normal problems encountered with water, running sand and
other unstable trench conditions. This results in shorter job projections,
while mininizing traffic interruption and cost overruns.
The ALOK STM provides up to 10 of omnidirectional deflection while
still maintaining a watertight seal. This design allows the connector to
compensate for shear due to settlement or ground movement preventing
water and soil infiltration into the sewer system. This proper pipe-tostructure connection minimizes the chance of pothole formation and
sediment build-up in the storm system, saving states and municipalities
money over the life of the structure.
On larger diameter pipe when size prohibits a gasket from being installed
in a flat plane, an ALOK STM Connector can be configured for casting
in a curve with the connector staying perpendicular to the center line of
the pipe. This design has resulted from years of extensive research and
development and causes no loss of compression or deflection.

INCOMPARABLE PIPE-TO-MANHOLE CONNECTORS FOR SANITARY SYSTEMS

X-CEL
ALOK X-CEL
Designed to produce a
guaranteed watertight
seal between pipe and
concrete, the ALOK
X-CEL flexible pipe-tomanhole connector
provides maximum
performance on the job
site. Its unique design
not only saves valuable
project time, but also
ensures longevity and
offers unsurpassed
environmental benefits.
ALOK X-CEL connectors prevent infiltration and ex-filtration into
wastewater or stormwater systems, and are installed in the precast
structure in a way that does not require coring or placement after the
base component is cast. This eliminates residual waste from coring,
disposal of the slugs or wasted raw material utilization or energy.
Once cast-in, the connector becomes an integral component of the
structure wall.
Based on the traditional ALOK connector, the X-CEL's enhanced
features improve performance. Take the patented water pocket for
example, which utilizes the untapped pressure of ground water to
exert a clamping force around the connector and pipe, allowing the
connector to perform in deeper installations.
Demonstrated in tests higher than 15 psi of hydrostatic water pressure, the X-CEL's unique design provides 45 percent more rubber
contact with the pipe, allowing for greater pipe deflection.

MATERIAL
Molded or extruded from compounds formulated for wastewater
applications and engineered to conform to the requirements of
section 4.1.1 of ASTM C-923, the standard rubber connector is available
in alternative compounds upon request. Contact an ALOK representative regarding special applications, such as the presence of hydrocarbons.

KEY ADVANTAGES
The ALOK X-CEL offers distinct advantages for engineers, specifiers,
precasters and municipalities. An enhanced profile gives the connector
45% greater rubber contact with the pipe, thus allowing the pipe to be
deflected in excess of 10 degrees of omnidirectional deflection, all the
while maintaining a watertight seal. These enhancements allow for
more flexibility to compensate for pipe shear due to settlement or
ground movement.

KEY ADVANTAGES (continued)

On larger-diameter pipe, where size prohibits a gasket from being
installed in a flat plane, the X-CEL can be configured for casting in a
curve with the connector staying perpendicular to the center line of the
pipe. Discovered through years of extensive research and development,
the configurations cause no loss of compression or deflection.
Functioning on pure compression, the X-CEL allows for fast and
easy field installation. After the connector and pipe are cleaned and
lubricated, the pipe is simply centered in the connector and inserted.
Backfilling can be done immediately, thus enhancing project safety and
overcoming the typical problems of water, running sand and other
unstable trench conditions.
For Specifiers, the X-CEL connector offers a guaranteed solution to the
age-old containment system problem of the best way to connect pipes
and concrete structures. Precasters using X-CEL connectors experience
increased satisfaction due to their ability to offer a complete watertight,
guaranteed product, while municipalities that install X-CEL will
ultimately spend less on road repair by avoiding the possibility of pot/sink
holes that are often the result of leaking, non-connected, systems.

PRODUCT SPECIFICATIONS
A flexible pipe to manhole connector shall be used whenever a pipe
penetrates into a precast concrete manhole or structure. The connector shall be
the ALOK X-CEL CONNECTOR as manufactured by ALOK PRODUCTS, INC.,
Tullytown, PA, or approved equal.
The design of the connector shall provide a flexible, watertight seal between the pipe
and concrete structure. The connector shall assure that a seal is made between:
(1) The connector and the structure wall by casting the connector
integrally with the structure wall during the manufacturing process in a manner
that it will not pull out during pipe coupling. The connector shall also be capable
of being cast into a round structure by curving the connector in a manner that
allows it to remain centrally located within the structure wall and perpendicular
to the pipe. This configuration will result in no loss of seal or deflection of pipe
entering a concrete structure.
(2) The seal between the connector and the pipe shall be made by the compression of the connector between the outside circumference of the pipe and the interior hole opening of the structure. The connector shall be the only component to
affect the seal between the pipe and structure.
The connector shall be made from materials that conform to the physical and
chemical requirements outlined in Section 4, Materials and Manufacture of
ASTM C-923 Standard Specification for Resilient Connectors between Reinforced
Concrete Manhole Structures, Pipes, and Laterals, and the overall design will meet
or exceed Section 7, Test Methods and Requirements of ASTM C-923.

WARNING
To ensure the A-LOK X-CEL Connector remains
a flexible watertight connector, it is A-LOK
Products, Inc. strong recommendation that no
mortar be placed between the pipe and wall of
the concrete structure. The use of mortar in this

INSERTALOK
FOR SANITARY MANHOLES ROUND AND FLATWALL

KEY ADVANTAGES
The INSERTALOK Connectors function on pure compression making
field installation quick and easy. Clean and lubricate both connector
and pipe, center pipe in connector, and insert.
The connector provides a tapered profile which enhances coupling
characteristics by allowing final compression to be gradual, thereby
reducing the overall coupling force.
The INSERTALOK Connectors can be installed in a precision cast or
cored opening as a mainline connector for new construction, a retrofit or a tie in for new construction.
The connector assures a positive watertight connection providing over
7 degrees of omnidirectional deflection to eliminate infiltration and
shear due to settlement or ground movement. This flexibility permits
immediate backfill enhancing project safety, and overcoming the
problems normally encountered with water, running sand and other
unstable trench conditions.

GrandSlam Lubricant is a new material specifically formulated for pipe penetrations

into all A-LOK connectors as well as joining all types of pipes in trenches and manholes.

Very Slippery! GrandSlam Lubricant reduces friction of the gasket against the
bell and the pipe against the connector. It helps pipe slide in smoothly minimizing the
possibility of the gasket to displace and cause bell damage or the beveled pipe to tear
the connector.

Special Wax Technology! GrandSlam contains a special wax that fills in the
microscopic pores in concrete. By filling in the pores, gaskets slide rather than catch on
the concrete surface.

Clean and Neat to Use! GrandSlam Lubricant washes off hands, tools and
clothing with soap and water. It has no bad smell and does not get soupy, so field
crews are more willing to apply it properly ensuring good field performance.

Easy to Apply! GrandSlam Lubricant clings to everything! Gaskets, connectors,

concrete, PVC, ductile iron, HDPE, clay, and steel surfaces. Its unique formulation
keeps the lubricant where it belongs whether applied by hand, swab or brush. A totally
lubricated area minimizes the threat of damage during installations.

Compatible! GrandSlam Lubricant does not affect or swell rubber or plastic

gaskets. It contains no hydrocarbon or silicone greases. It does not affect gaskets
over time to cause eventual leakage or breakage.

Safe and Non Toxic! Harmless to people and the environment when used as
directed. Can be safely used in the field. Suitable for potable water systems. Meets
NSF/ANSI Standard 61.

By preventing even one damaged pipe per month, GrandSlam Lubricant can pay for itself
over and over again!

Application & Installation

1. GrandSlam Lubricant is ready to use in the pail. Do not dilute, thin, or otherwise alter
its consistency. For best results lubricate surfaces right before making connections.
2. Clean all surfaces before applying lube. Outside the pipe and all over the connector for
pipe penetrations. Inside the bell outside the spigot for pipe to pipe.
3. For pipe penetrations into a connector, bevel the pipe, lubricate the connector all around,
then lubricate the pipe back its diameter up to 21.
4. The lubricant can be brushed on, swabbed on, or wiped on by hand with a cloth glove. Be
sure to get full lubricant coverage. Dont leave any area DRY. GrandSlam Lubricant
makes such applications easy by grabbing and clinging to all surfaces.
5. Because GrandSlam lubricant will adhere when applied under water, steps 1-6 can be
done in the rain or in a wet trench just like an A-LOK pipe installation.
6. After lubrication, a pipe can be centered and inserted into a connector or pipes can be
aligned and joined by an approved coupling method.
7. For pipe to pipe installations position the gasket in the groove and equalize its stretch by
lifting it slightly with a screwdriver while completely circling the pipe. Apply lubrication on
top of the newly inserted gasket using one of the methods in step 4.

KEY ADVANTAGES
The WATER-STOP profile provides a better surface than PVC or
corrugated HDPE for grout to adhere as well as a watertight connection
between the connector and pipe. The Special T profile also helps
prevent water and soil infiltration for all types of pipe. This connector is
made from a Polyisoprene SBR blend. The WATER-STOP Wedge Kit
(see Fig. 2) can easily be installed around existing pipes during the
rehabilitation process.

exceed Section 7, Test Methods and Requirements of ASTM C923.
The connector shall be sized specifically for the type of pipe being
used and shall be installed in accordance with the recommendations
of the manufacturer.

KEY ADVANTAGES
The G3 Boot System can withstand 15 of omnidirectional
deflection and of centerline offset while still maintaining a
watertight connection. This flexibility eliminates infiltration due to
pipe shear caused by settlement or ground movement.
The inner O-ring design of the G3 Connector eliminates rubber
wrinkling, compensates for pipe irregularity and wall thickness to
insure a watertight seal.
G3 Component Packaging, featuring a tough loop lock fastener
that keeps installation instructions, take down clamp, boot and
band secure together from factory to job site.

PRODUCT SPECIFICATIONS
A flexible pipe to manhole connector shall be used whenever a pipe
penetrates into a precast concrete manhole or structure.
The connector shall be the G3 Boot System featuring component
packaging as manufactured by ALOK PRODUCTS, INC.,
Tullytown, PA, or approved equal.
The design of the connector shall provide a flexible, watertight seal
between the pipe and concrete structure. The connector shall
assure that a seal is made between (1) the connector and the
structure wall by placing the connector and expansion band into
the center third of the concrete hole opening. The band is then
expanded by tightening the expansion mechanism increasing the
bands overall circumference and compressing the connector
against the sides of the hole opening. (2) The seal between the
connector and the pipe shall be made by compressing the
connector against the outside circumference of the pipe by means
of a stainless steel take-down band.

PERFORMANCE STANDARD

MATERIAL
The QUIKLOK Connector is molded from an EPDM compound
engineered to conform with the requirements of section 4.1.1 of
ASTM C-923. Alternative compounds are available for unusual
applications upon special order.
All stainless steel hardware is in compliance with section 4.2,
Mechanical Devices of ASTM C-923.

KEY ADVANTAGES
The QUIKLOK CONNECTOR assures a positive watertight connection
and provides up to 20 degrees omni-directional deflection and 1.00" of
vertical or horizontal movement without loss of seal. This deflection
permits pipe to structure settling without damage to the pipe or loss of
the watertight seal and will also allow for many angles of incoming pipe.
The QUIKLOK cast in Boot Connector is manufactured with the
stainless steel takedown clamp as an integral part of the rubber
connector.
The correct takedown clamp travels in the installation position from the
time it leaves A-LOK, while it is cast in the structure and until it arrives
at the job site. After pulling out the connector its in position ready to be
tightened down around the pipe on the outside of the structure.

The QUIKLOK CONNECTOR meets or exceeds all material and test

requirements of ASTM C-923 titled Resilient Connectors Between

CORROSION PROTECTION FOR CONCRETE STRUCTURES

DURA PLATE 100 LINER SYSTEM

ALOK DURA PLATE 100 LINER SYSTEM
The Duraplate 100 Liner
is a corrosion protection
system for concrete
structures used in
wastewater, stormwater
and light industrial
applications. It is an
extremely durable as well
as resilient PVC polymer
blend material that is
thermoformed into a
sectional design. The
compression joints allow
for secure installation of
the sections during the
Precast process and
eliminate the need for welding.

MATERIAL
The liner and seals are all formed from materials selected for their
chemical resistance properties. The main panel sections are formed
from a polymer blend, while the vertical panel joints are sealed with
an EPDM rubber, and the horizontal structure joints with an approved
preformed butyl sealant.

KEY ADVANTAGES
The Dura Plate 100 Liner System was designed on a three point
design philosophy.
1)

2)

3)

The system will provide corrosion protection to the concrete

substrate, by shielding it with a protective barrier of inert
material embedded to the inside wall of the structure. Each
panel features a minimum return on each edge to ensure
proper sealing.
The design will minimize the freight cost by using a sectional
design that will allow the pieces to be nested within each other
while being shipped to the precaster.
The design will provide easy installation without the need for
welding sections together, but still providing complete corrosion
protection to the structure.

PERFORMANCE STANDARD
The Dura Plate 100 Liner meets or exceeds all material and test
requirements as outlined by the manufacturer.

PRODUCT SPECIFICATIONS
A protective liner shall be used whenever a precast concrete manhole or
structure is used in a sanitary or light industrial sewer system in which the
potential for corrosive attack to the concrete substrate exists.
The liner shall be the Dura Plate 100 Liner as manufactured by A-LOK
Products, Inc., Tullytown, PA or approved equal.
The design of the liner shall provide a corrosion protective barrier permanently
embedded to the inside wall of the structure. The liner system shall assure
that:
1) The liner shall become an integrally part of the structure wall by casting
the liner with the structure during the manufacturing process. The liner
shall also be capable of being cast into a round structure by curving the
liner in a manner that allows it to remain permanently attached to the
inside structure wall.
2) Vertical joints between the liner sections shall be made by the mechanical
compression of a EPDM rubber strip between the returns of the two
panels with self tapping screws spaced every 3 inches apart.
3) Horizontal joints between structure sections shall be sealed with an
approved butyl strip compressed between the sections in a manner as
recommended by the manufacturer.
4) The liner system shall be composed from materials that are corrosion
resistant by nature and conforms to the physical and chemical
requirements as determined by the manufacturer.
5) The liner shall be sized specifically for the type of structure being used
and shall be installed in accordance with the recommendations of the
manufacturer.

PRECAST INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

1. Inspect core for sharp or jagged edges that could damage the liner
during the shipping process.
2. Place Dura Plate 100 Liner panels level around the core of the form.
Form release agent is not necessary.
3. Install the vertical joints by placing the black rubber strip between the
panel returns, making sure that the flap of the strip is fitted over one of
the returns.
4. Place backing plate on the inside return of panel that the flap fits over.
Hold together with spring loaded clamps evenly spaced about 12"
apart.
5. Secure the panels together with fasteners placed every 3 inches,
making sure that each fastener is tightened to 5 in-lbs.
Note: The fasteners must be installed from the side opposite the flap,
straight thru the backing plate, parallel to the liner.
6. Repeat for all seams.
Note: Caulk can be placed between the form core and liner returns to
minimize concrete seepage during production.
7. Install reinforcement into form with any other necessary parts needed
for the structure.
8. Pour concrete around the liner evenly to prevent shifting of the liner.
9. Vibrate and compact the concrete in a manner that will protect the liner
and produce a dense, homogenous structure.
10. Take precaution to protect the liner from sharp or jagged objects while
stripping from the form.
11. Visually inspect the liner after production for any cuts or tears. If repairs
are needed, refer to Dura Plate 100 Liner repair bulletin for proper
repair procedures.
12. If steps or ladders are to be installed, drill all holes in liner larger than
the diameter of the step. Install steps or ladder then caulk area around
step and liner with FR500 caulking material (Lap Sealant).
13. Protect all hole opening surfaces with a minimum 1/8 inch coverage of
Sewer Guard that overlaps the liner at least a 1 inches.

12

JOB SITE INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

1. When unloading the structure be careful. Take measures to protect the
liner from being damaged by rocks or other debris. Lift carefully, do not
drag.
2. Clean and install butyl strips around the joint design making sure that
the butyl overlaps both the cement and liner return.
3. Carefully seat each section together making sure enough pressure is
applied to seal the joint.
4. After structure is in place, plug all lift pin inserts and holes with suitable
non-shrink grout.
5. If any damage to the liner occurs at the job site, use Dura Plate 100
Liner repair bulletin for proper repair procedures.

GRADE WORK PROTECTION SYSTEM

Inflow & Infiltration (I&I) deterioration
of grade work is one of the leading
causes of pothole formation around
manholes. Grade work is constantly
being attacked by the pounding and
vibration of traffic, the corrosive effect
of chemicals produced by bacteria
found in sewer systems, and the
freeze/thaw cycle. These forces destroy
the grade work by creating voids that
eventually turn into potholes.

Safety:
Dura-Plate 100 Epoxy Mortar has a low level of toxicity.
Good industrial hygiene practice and appropriate
precautions should be employed during use. Avoid
personal contact with the product. See MSDS for specific
details.
Storage and Handling:
Keep cans tightly closed in a cool, dark, dry location. All
cans should be disposed of in an environmentally safe
manner and in accordance with governmental regulations.
Unopened product has a shelf life of two years.

Application:
Surface Preparation: Surfaces should be clean,
structurally sound, and fully cured for 28 days.
Remove any loose material. Be sure that surfaces
are free of oil, grease, paint, rust, asphalt, and other
contaminants. Surfaces may be cleaned with
detergents followed by thorough rinsing with water.
Best results are seen when new concrete is abraded
by abrasive blast, high-pressure water blast, or acid
etch to obtain uniform surface texture. Dura-Plate
100 Epoxy Mortar may be applied to clean surfaces
that are dry or are slightly damp.

Mixing: Dura-Plate 100 Epoxy Mortar is packaged in

factory pre-measured kits. To mix, pour the Resin
Part A and the Hardener Part B into a clean pail. Mix
thoroughly until a consistent color is seen. Slowly
add in Filler Part C, continuing to mix until the
consistency is uniform. Mix only complete batches.
Add the light gray Sika color pack slowly till it is
thoroughly mixed and uniform color is seen. Do not
add solvents to Dura-Plate 100 Epoxy Mortar.

Installation: Apply 1/8 (3 mm) in thickness with a

trowel or spatula. Apply Dura-Plate 100 Epoxy
Mortar at ambient temperatures of 45F (7C) and
above. Do not apply once the material has begun to
set up. Pot life and cure time of Dura-Plate 100 are
dependent on temperature. Higher temperatures
shorten these times. Lower temperatures lengthen
these times.

Clean Up: Clean uncured material from equipment

with Grime-Away Multi-Purpose Cleaning Wipes or
Type HP Cleaner. Remove cured material
mechanically. Clean hands with soap and water or
Grime-Away Multi-Purpose Cleaning Wipes.

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
KEY ADVANTAGES
BUTYL-LOK sealants remain permanently flexible and form
permanent bonds to a wide variety of substrates including
concrete, metals and plastics. These products are designed
not to shrink or oxidize and have excellent resistance to
environmental temperature extremes, acid and alkaline
conditions. Adhesion and cohesion actually improves after
joint has been formed and placed in service.

SURFACE PREPARATION
Joint surfaces should be clean and dry. Due to the high
adhesive quality of BUTYL-LOK, priming of the joint surfaces
is not normally required. However, should wet or unusual
application conditions exist, it is recommended that either
BUTYL-LOK Emulsion (non-flam) or Solvent (flammable)
Adhesive Primer be coated on the joint surface and allowed to
dry a minimum of 10 minutes before application of joint
sealant.

APPLICATION
BUTYL-LOK bonds instantly to joint surfaces and to itself.
Always butt ends of preformed sealant together never
overlap. Leave protective release paper on sealant during
application and remove only after structure is ready for
coupling. The joint should them be coupled with sufficient
pressure for proper joint completion. The resulting annular
space after structure is properly coupled, determines the
volume (cross-section size) of BUTYL-LOK required.

SECONDARY INVERT FORMING SYSTEM

TRU-CONTOUR
TRU-CONTOUR
The Tru-Contour standard system allows for 2/3 invert depth and is
compatible with a variety of flexible pipe to manhole connectors. Full
depth systems are also available.
The Tru-Contour assembly consists of:
1) A hole adapter which is designed to align the invert assembly with
the flexible pipe to manhole connector. This insures pipe to invert
compatibility.
2) A series of 4 wedges and straight sections which when combined
provides an unlimited selection of angles to create enough
flexibility to form an in invert within 1.5 degrees.
3) A stabilizing jack which prevents from floatation during casting
operations. This insures that correct fall is maintained across the
manhole base.

AVAILABILITY CHART
A-LOK Products, Inc. and Tru-Contour have joined forces to bring
together the best in secondary precast inverts available today. The
Tru-Contour Invert Forming System offers the manhole producer a
very durable, systematic and versatile method of forming all invert
configurations from 4" through 48" diameter.

KEY ADVANTAGES
Two, three, and four way configurations including dead end
combinations with a standard .2 ft. of elevation difference (fall) can
be made easy and rapidly without the need for skilled labor.
Greater fall can be obtained based on the operators' ability to
experiment. The system's versatility is due to an unlimited
combination of
four basic wedges. With the combination of one or more of these
wedges, any angle can be obtained within 1.5 degrees. This allows
enough flexibility to effectively form an invert which aligns perfectly
with the entering pipeline.

System also available in Single Piece construction.

The Tru-Contour system cuts costly labor both in set-up and concrete
finishing time. A basic three way can be set up in approximately
fifteen minutes and depending on pouring procedures, can allow an
average of four inverts per day to be formed from a single system.
Finishing time is kept to a minimum due to the accuracy of flows the
forms create. Each invert in regard to channel width, depth and radial
turn is form finished.

LIFTING SYSTEM FOR PRECAST STRUCTURES

KEY-LOK
ALOK KEY-LOK

KEY ADVANTAGES
The KEY-LOK LIFT INSERT is designed with a key slot to prevent
rotation in the mold and to provide easy form removal in both wet cast
and dry cast methods of production.
The insert forms a precise cavity to accept the keyed lifting pins. This
assures minimum movement of the lifting device during handling.
The shape of the insert locks the lifting device into the cavity. As lifting
tension is applied, the KEY-LOK Lift Pins rotate 90 for removal.
The KEY-LOK Lift Pin Insert eliminates the necessity of a cold joint in
patching the lift hole allowing immediate backfilling of the structure,
enhancing project quality and safety.
The use of an A-LOK Manhole Lift Bar assures that the Lift Pins stay
perpendicular to the manhole wall while lifting.

SLOTTED INSERT TO ANCHOR CAST IRON FRAME TO STRUCTURE

BOLT SLOT INSERT

ALOK BOLT SLOT INSERT

KEY ADVANTAGES
Guaranteed alignment of galvanized nut and bolt centers of manhole frame.
The .75 inch square nut is galvanized to prevent corrosion.
In traffic areas, misalignment of frame and structure top is eliminated due to shifting or movement during construction, or during
routine maintenance.
In easement areas, the frame assembly is protected against theft
or vandalism by being firmly secured to the structure.
Precast top sections can be standardized to accept any manhole
frame regardless of bolt centers.

The ALOK BOLT SLOT INSERT is a slotted insert designed to be

cast into the conical or slab top section of underground concrete
structures for the purpose of anchoring the cast iron frame to the
structure. The insert assembly consists of a tough polypropylene shell
and a .75 inch square galvanized nut.
The key purpose of the insert is to allow for center to center adjustment of the .75 inch galvanized nut to match the bolt center of the
manhole frame. Traditional anchoring inserts require precise positioning on center to assure proper alignment of assembly. With the availability of the Bolt SLot Insert in overall lengths of 3 inches and 6 inches, any manhole frame can be accommodated regardless of bolt centers.
The inserts are shipped assembled for standard installation into the
precast top section.
Inserts are held in position during the casting operation by a FourWay Installation Holder in the four quadrants on a predetermined
center to allow maximum adjustment in matching the bolt center of
the manhole frame.

Specific Description of AV-202 Multigrout

Instructions for Using AV-202 Multigrout

Safety Procedures

AV-202 Multigrout is a hydrophilic polymer. The uncured material is a

caramel colored, translucent liquid with a viscosity in the 2500
centipoise range at 86F. At workable water to polymer ratios, however,
the viscosity can be adjusted to approach the 15 to 30 centipoise range.
AV-202 contains non-volatile materials constituting almost 100% of its
total weight.

Although the AV-202 Multigrout pre-polymer is a relatively thick material,

it is easily handled with commercially available positive displacement
pumps. AV-202 Multigrout is designed to cure with water, and may
absorb large quantities into the reaction mass. The ratio of water to
AV-202 Multigrout chosen depends upon the application. For most
applications which require the use of gels, the water to AV-202
Multigrout ratio should be in the range of 10:1 to 15:1 by volume.

Summary of Handling Precautions

1. Wear goggles and rubber gloves in handling and application
operations.
2. Keep away from heat and open flame during storage and use.
3. Ventilate sufficiently and use respirator, especially for operations
in a confined space.
4. If skin or mucous membrane is contaminated with Multigrout or
its solutions, wash thoroughly with plenty of water. In case
of eye contact, wash immediately with plenty of water and boric
acid solution, and seek medical attention.

When mixed with a specific quantity of water, the material can expand
10 to 12 times its original volume and cure to a tough, flexible and
elastomeric condition. After completely curing, the AV-202 may exhibit
strength properties of up to 80 psi tensile and 500% elongation.

** A foamy film is obtained when concentration is higher than 20%,
i.e., less than five parts of water to one part of AV-202 Multigrout.

Higher ratios (i.e., greater than 15:1) give lower initial viscosities and
longer gel times but reduce the unconfined compressive strength of the
consolidated material in the grout zone. Such high ratios are primarily
used for short-term erosion control of surface soils.

During the initial reaction stage of Multigrout with water, amines and
carbon dioxide are generated by a reaction with water in the soil or
water injected with the grout pump at the site of the leak to be sealed.
Then, the resultant amines react quickly with an isocyanate group to
form compounds with a three-dimensional structure cross-linked with
urea and biuret linkages. These compounds form a gel which is
insoluble in water.

Warranty Statement

The initial mixed viscosity of the water to AV-202 Multigrout blend is

important in determining the soils that can be penetrated and pumping
pressure required. With the AV-202 Multigrout system, the initial mixed
viscosity is dependent primarily on the water to AV-202 Multigrout ratio
and water temperature.

The data, information, and statements contained herein are believed

to be reliable, but are not construed as a warranty or representation
for which Avanti International assumes any legal responsibility. Since
field conditions vary widely, users must undertake sufficient verification and testing to determine the suitability of any product or process
mentioned in this or any other written material from Avanti for their
own particular use.

The linearity of the rate at which the viscosity of the mixed grout
increases from the time of mixing up to gelation is a second important
factor in determining the degree and types of soil that can be
penetrated. With the AV-202 Multigrout, the viscosity remains low for
the initial 60 to 70% of the gel time and then increases rapidly as the
blend approaches gelation.

Introduction

General Information

AV-202 Multigrout is a chemical grout system of water-soluble

hydrophilic polyurethane pre-polymers. Multigrout reacts freely with
water to form a strong film, gel or foam according to the mix design
requirements of the application. This capability makes Multigrout ideal
for use as a remedial water stop in a wide range of construction
applications.

For example, by combining Multigrout with water in a ratio of

one part Multigrout and 1 to 5 parts of water, the resulting foam might
be used to fill an abandoned pipeline. With a greater ratio of water to
Multigrout, perhaps in the range of 1 part Multigrout to 10 parts of
water, the product can be injected into a subsurface structure to seal
cracks in concrete. By increasing the water ratio even higher to
perhaps a 1 to 20 ratio of Multigrout to water, the resilient gel can be
effectively used as an impermeable barrier for other applications.

Table Six:

As the ratio of water to Multigrout increases, the viscosity of the mixture

decreases. The nature of a particular application dictates the proper
ratio of Multigrout to water and experience is the best teacher for how to
choose the correct mixture. An operator must always bear in mind that
each application is unique and requires planning. The ideal goal should
always be a balance between an initial product viscosity that makes
placement effective and easy and a final product that will accomplish
the job at hand.
An outstanding feature of AV-202 Multigrout is its adaptability to any of
several water stop requirements. In an application needing a foam, for
example, the product is appropriate as well as another application
where a resilient gel is required. The property of the end product is
easily controlled by any application program. Furthermore, AV-202
Multigrout can also be altered during a grouting program. For example,
a quick foam can be formed initially and later backed up with a dense,
strong gel, all from the same basic product. Complex grouting
applications can often be simplified by the use of AV-202 Multigrout.

AV-202 Multigrout has a strong affinity for water. Although normally

not required, standard static mixers may be used. Upon curing, the
gel can contain many times its own volume of water. The mixture of
AV-202 Multigrout and water is initially low in viscosity and can be
injected under pressure to seal voids, fissures or cracks. Once the
gel has cured, it is resistant to water, thus reducing permeability and
forming an effective water shut off system. The cured grout also
increases the strength of the soil mass and consolidates the soil.

When AV-202 Multigrout is mixed with a small amount of water, a

reaction proceeds through two stages: foam stage and cure stage.

Gel time is defined as the time interval from initial mixing of AV-202
to the point where the blend viscosity is too high for gravity flow.

Gel time is controlled primarily by two factors:

1. Water temperature
2. Water : AV-202 ratio

Due to the adaptability of AV-202

Multigrout, the product is appropriate for
many different waterproofing and sealing
problems. It may be injected with a
positive displacement pump or used
with AV-219 (Oakum) for large cracks or
joints and placed by hand. The ability to
control the physical properties of the
final product gives the applicator a tool
for a wide variety of grouting programs.
For injection placement, the best
equipment is a positive displacement
pump such as the Graco Airless Sprayer.

Lower water temperatures and higher water to AV-202 ratios give

longer gel and tack free times. Gel times may also vary slightly with
the age of the AV-202 and chemical content of the water.
Table Five depicts the relationship between gel time and
concentration of Multigrout with gel time measured at 3 levels of
temperature in the aqueous solution.

Table Five:
Water : AV-202

Both stages of the grout must be understood and controlled to

obtain good results. The ambient temperature of the grout is the
primary variable that affects foam and cure times.

If unrestrained, the material may expand up to ten times the original

unreacted volume of grout and water. Unrestrained expansion,
however, results in a foam of low density. A compacted foam is more
desirable for most applications and fillers or reinforcements such as
oakum may be used to provide acceptable density.
Following the foam stage is the cure stage. During the cure stage,
the grout solidifies and forms a cellular rubber gasket (reinforced by
oakum if it has been added) which can withstand a water pressure
test. After placement and the foam stage, the grout will continue to
cure over the next several hours; however, within five to ten minutes
it has achieved sufficient strength to form a serviceable water barrier.

Data shows that the permeability of a soil grouted with AV-202 in gel
form is a function of the extent that voids are filled with grout.
Values in the 10-7 to 10-9 cm/sec range should be obtained when
voids are essentially full of grout using the constant head
permeability test method (ASTM D-2434).

Other factors may affect quantities required. These figures are intended
only as a guide.

Normally an overnight soak will dissolve most deposits and sufficiently

soften them for easy removal.

In joints, the primary factor influencing the quantity of AV-202 Multigrout

required to seal a given joint is the size of the joint gap. The amount of
AV-202 required will be less if old joint compounds still partially fill the
joint. As a rough rule of thumb, one fluid ounce of AV-202 will be
required per lineal inch of joint having a gap of one inch between the bell
and spigot.

To clean the entire grouting system, flush grout from system with up
to 5 gallons of AV-208 (Technical Grade Acetone). Pump until
acetone runs clean. DO NOT REUSE.

Actual examination of joint conditions, coupled with considerable

experience, is necessary to accurately estimate grout quantities. This is
particularly true for sealing large diameter pipe joints as shown in
Figure 1. In some instances, special equipment and techniques can be
employed to reduce material quantities required without affecting the
quality of the seal. Project planners are strongly encouraged to consult
with an approved applicator of Avanti products or an experienced
grouting contractor when preparing material cost estimates.

temperature in the aqueous solution. The foam requires approximately
an equal amount of time to reach a tack free condition after its
initial set.

Application of AV-202 Multigrout

AV-202 is designed to be used by qualified applicators with the

proper equipment. Grouting equipment for the application of this
product is available from Avanti International.

The EGP Technique

The Expanded Gasket Placement Technique (EGP) is the process
whereby jute strips, soaked in AV-202, are then packed around various
types of pipe to achieve a very effective seal. For further information
concerning EGP, consult the Avanti EGP brochure, which can be
downloaded from the Avanti website at www.avantigrout.com.

Set Time in Minutes

Within 15 to 45 seconds after mixing, depending on mix ratios and

the temperature of the grout and mix water, the material will begin to
foam. The viscosity is such that the grout will not readily flow out of
the point of placement, i.e., into the pipe or the soil outside of the
pipe.

General Information

AV-202
Multigrout

AV-202 Multigrout is often used for grouting joints and repairing leaks
in large sanitary and storm sewer pipes by forming a flexible gasket or
plug in the flowing water path. In an uncured form, AV-202 is a
viscous liquid similar in appearance to common honey. When mixed
with a small amount of water, however, the grout expands and rapidly
cures to a tough, flexible, cellular rubber that is essentially unaffected
by sewer environments.

Multigrout : Total Volume

Grout - pounds

The form of the final product, whether it is film, gel or foam, is controlled
by the ratio of water to AV-202 Multigrout. For example, a mixture of 1
part Multigrout and from 1 to 5 parts water will produce a product with
the general properties of a foam. A mixture of 1 part Multigrout and
approximately 7 to 10 parts water will result in a resilient gel. A mixture
of 1 part Multigrout and 16 to 20 parts water will result in a soft gel.
Ratios of 1 part Multigrout and 25 to 30 parts water create a very soft
gel. The specific physical properties of AV-202 Multigrout, when
combined with water in various ratios, are depicted later in this manual.

Specification available online at www.avantigrout.com.
The quantities of AV-202 Multigrout required to rehabilitate or repair
concrete pipe joints of various diameters are shown in Figure 1. These
quantity estimates are based on actual field experience but may vary
slightly in the smaller diameter pipe and substantially in the larger
diameter pipe.

Some factors which may affect the quantity of AV-202 required are:
1. Original gasketing materials remaining in the joint.
2. Open or off-set condition of the joint.
3. Severity of infiltration or exfiltration at the joint.
4. Type and condition of grouting equipment to be used.
5. Application method used.

The V-PAT Technique for Sealing Joints and Cracks

The Variable Pressure Application Technique (V-PAT) can be used to
apply pure AV-202 Multigrout resin in both cracks and expansion joints.
The methods used for these two water control problems are somewhat
different, but the basic steps are the same. The procedures for sealing
cracks and joints by the V-PAT method may be found on the Avanti
website at www.avantigrout.com.

Cleanup Procedures
Cleaning
Most day-to-day cleanup and purging of nonhydrated grout (liquid
AV-202 that has not been exposed to water or moisture) from pumps,
fittings, and hoses can be accomplished with AV-208 (Technical Grade
Acetone). Although acetone is preferred, MEK or other solvents are
sometimes used. When using solvents for cleanup, extinguish all
sources of ignition in the area and observe proper precautionary
measures for handling such materials. If small component parts must
be cleaned of cured grout, it is best to disassemble and soak them in a
100% solution of AV-222 Grout Cleaner. (Always use polyethylene
plastic or steel containers for soaking).

Safety During Cleanup

Acetone is flammable and the precautions necessary for any flammable
material should be followed. Since grout compound which comes into
contact with clothing cannot be removed, rain gear or disposable
coveralls are highly recommended. Hats or hoods help keep the
material from dripping into the hair during overhead application.
Handling and Storage of AV-202 Multigrout
Care must be taken in handling and storage of AV-202 Multigrout. The
material is sensitive to moisture and moderately sensitive to high
storage temperatures. Optimum storage is 40-60F under fairly dry
conditions. Storage temperature should not exceed 80F. Properly
stored, the material should have a useful shelf life of two years. Once a
container has been opened, the useful life of the material is reduced.

Safety Procedures
Please refer to the Avanti AV-202 Multigrout MSDS available online at
www.avantigrout.com.

Exposure
AV-202 Multigrout in nonhydrated or liquid form may cause skin and eye
irritation following direct contact. If AV-202 comes in contact with skin,
it should be washed off with soap and water. Material getting into the
eyes must be flushed out immediately with water and a physician
should be consulted. AV-202 Multigrout should not be ingested.
Before eating, smoking, or drinking liquids, remove protective clothing
such as gloves and coveralls, wash hands with soap and water and
stand away from the immediate work site. DO NOT SMOKE while
working with AV-202 Multigrout. If respiratory difficulties are encountered when working with AV-202 Multigrout, obtain medical attention.
Users should avoid excessive exposure to vapors and keep the work
area sufficiently ventilated to avoid exceeding the toluene diisocyanate
Threshold Limit Value (TLV). Gloves, goggles, respirator, and protective
clothing are recommended when working with this product.

Ventilation
Ventilation is an important aspect of project planning. Small amounts of
toluene diisocyanate (TDI) may be present. A small segment of the
population may be more sensitive to TDI than the norm. A respirator
equipped with an organic vapor cartridge should always be available
and ventilation augmented by blowers or fans when appropriate.

Project planners are strongly encouraged to consult
with an approved applicator of Avanti products or an experienced
grouting contractor when preparing material cost estimates.

product is available from Avanti International.

A respirator
equipped with an organic vapor cartridge should always be available
and ventilation augmented by blowers or fans when appropriate.

temperature in the aqueous solution.

Percentage

Pipe Diameter - inches

Figure 1: AV-202 Multigrout required for large diameter pipes.

Note: Refer to Avanti Internationals Large Diameter Pipe Sealing

Physical Properties of AV-202 Multigrout

used to prepare a monolithic film.

Big boxes, big seals

DIXIE CONTRACTOR, August 5, 1991

Custom design helped a drainage

project to a successful completion at
Dixie Landings, a Florida
development.

Florida is a land of superlatives world's brightest sunshine, world's most beautiful beaches, and on and on.
Now, thanks to recent construction at the Dixie Landings Resort, Florida claims another record too. It's now the site of the world's largest
flexible pipe to manhole seal.
Construction began last year on the Dixie Landings Resort Community Phase 1. The project in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., was designed by the
Boyle Engineering Corporation of Orlando.
Phillips & Jordan Incorporated of Knoxville, Tenn., submitted the low bid for Phase I of the project. Construction of the storm drainage for this
phase of the project involved the installation of 184 storm sewer structures and more than 20,500 linear feet of storm drainage pipe in sizes
of 8 in. PVC up to 84 in. RCP. The work involved depths exceeding 14 vertical feet.
Plans called for phase I of the project be constructed on a very tight construction schedule which required the storm sewer structures to be
delivered, excavated, installed and backfilled within 90 days from the first shipment. Phillips &Jordan choose Atlantic Concrete Products of
Sarasota, Fla. , as the supplier of the precast drainage structures and specified that the A-LOK STM Connector manufactured by ALOK
Products of Tullytown, Penn., be installed in every location possible.
Included in the 184 storm drainage structures were five special structures to accommodate direction changes of the 1040 lineal feet of 84 in.
reinforced concrete pipe. Reinforced concrete pipe for this project was supplied by Joelson Concrete Pipe Company. These five structures
were in excess of 13.5 ft. deep and were located in an area with a water table that was approximately one foot below finished grade.
Phillips & Jordan and their project manager Jerry Martin were concerned with the installation time and the watertightness when using structures with conventional grouted pipe connections. Atlantic Concrete Products solved this problem by custom designing five structures with
the pipes entering on a flat wall surface. These were rectangular, trapezoidal and pentagonal structures designed to accommodate the large
84 in. concrete pipe while keeping the lifting weight minimal.
Atlantic Concrete then asked ALOK Products to furnish the largest rubber storm pipe connector to date. The A-LOK STM Connector was
designed to accommodate the 84 in. reinforced concrete pipe with a 100 in. outside diameter. This would speed the installation and ensure
watertightness.
A-LOK met the challenge and was able to design and furnish A-LOK STM mandrels and gaskets to meet the precaster's delivery schedule.
The first structure for the 84 in. line was delivered last May, and within 90 minutes the influent and effluent pipes were installed and the structure ready for backfill. Overall, Phillips &Jordan was able to complete the installation in 75 days, 15 days ahead of schedule.

Flexible Storm Sewer Connector Introduced in Orlando

The largest application of a flexible pipe-to-manhole storm sewer
connector in Florida was introduced by Atlantic Concrete Products,
Inc. to the Orlando area in the early 90's. The application
consisted of 54" through 66" concrete pipe installed into 6' through
8' structures using the A-LOK STM flexible connector.
The A-LOK STM Connector was designed by A-LOK Products,
Inc. of Tullytown, Pennsylvania specifically to give long-term
protection against water infiltration and soil erosion into storm
sewer systems. It provides for more economical construction by
elimination the costly mortaring operation; prevents road
settlement due to sub-soil infiltration into the system and enables
normal traffic patterns to be re-established more quickly because
backfill can be affected immediately. The system is also effective
in reducing long term maintenance costs.

Pipe installed into A-LOK STM Gasket.

The Wesmere-Phase I project is located in Orange County and is owned by Arvida/JMB Partners-II Inc. The
system was designed by Bowyer-Singleton and Associates and installed by Premier Development of Central
Florida.
The project includes 87 storm structures varying in depth from 4 feet to 14.5 feet. The structure sizes range
from 4 diameter through 8 diameter round and from 36 to 80 square. All storm sewer structures were
manufactured by Atlantic Concrete Products to meet Florida D.O.T. specifications. The pipe was
manufactured by Hydro-Conduit Corporation and ranges in size from 15 RCP through 66 RCP.
The A-LOK STM storm sewer gaskets were placed in any structure where the invert elevation and the pipe
angle permitted the use of the gasket. Some structures were manufactured using one gasket and one hole.
Steve Sowards of Premier Development felt that he was getting a better job by at least having the single
gasket in the structure.
In addition to the storm structures, there are also 54 sanitary manholes and a lift station on the project. The
depth of the sanitary sewer manholes were supplied with precast inverts and the A-LOK pipe-to-manhole
sanitary connector. In order to increase efficiency, the drop manholes were built with precast
drop connections and precast drop riser sections were utilized.

Dura-Plate 100 Manhole Liner

Corrosion Resistant Sewer Liner
Assures Long Services Life

A state-of-the-art corrosion resistant plastic liner, introduced by Atlantic Concrete Products, Inc. is
designed to line concrete sewer structures for compatible service life equal to PVC pipe or PVC lined pipe.
Dura-Plate 100 Liner is specifically designed for use in sanitary manholes and may soon replace
ineffective interior coatings and eliminate most of the field labor and human error common with other lining
methods. This will enable engineers to design with standard walls, since it is more economical to prevent
deterioration than to design for it with additional wall thickness (sacrificial concrete).
The liner is made of semi-rigid thermo plastic and is formed to fit the manhole contour. Ribs and formed
into the sheet to be integrally and securely cast into the concrete structure.
This product culminated ten years of research and development by Atlantic Concrete working jointly with ALOK Products, Inc. to create a structure that will perform and endure in the Florida climate. The liner
assures long service life under severe conditions being resistant to H2S acids, alkalis and salts which attack
sewer systems.
Atlantic concrete is one of the leading producers of underground wastewater structures in the Eastern
United States and A-LOK Products is nationally recognized as a leader in engineering, research and
development of innovative watertight connectors and other rubber and plastic accessories for the
wastewater industry.
A-LOK Products, Inc. manufactures a full line of: pipe-to-manhole flexible connectors; safe, non-leak lift
devices; damage resistant end joints; watertight joint gaskets; precast outside drops and corrosive
resistant PVC liner.
