More on the Grange (Home, Home, on the Grange!)

We are talking about out west late 1800s
Height of L. Faire! We are talking about farmers.
Farmers are hating gold, railroads, and banks

Grange is a cooperative. Farmers are meeting, talking,

and pooling their resources.
They are angry with the RRs; they are dependent on
RRs. Railroads are gouging them.
Farmers take out loans to keep pace with
industrialization; buy new technologies leads to
overproduction
They are angry at Banks (that are calling in their loans),
and the gold standard.
WANTS RR Regulation will get it with the Hepburn
Act (gov power getting in the way of free market)

agriculture in the American economy in the late nineteenth
century. In what ways was the farmers' protest based
primarily on their economic woes, and to what extent was it a
protest against the loss of an older American way of life
based on agriculture and small towns?
