CHAPTER 3: TRAINING SUMMARY.

During the 10 weeks period of the industrial training, the activities that I had done were divided
into several tasks according to the weeks:

Week 1-5

- Dismantling of slope monitoring system, setup real time monitoring

system washing machine.

Week 6-10

- Land preparation, preparation of polybags and dripper system of the

fertigation system farm, and site visit

The details activities that I had done for the 10 weeks period of the industrial training is discuss
below.

3.1 DISMANTLING OF SLOPE MONITORING SYSTEM EQUIPMENT.

The activities took place at Bukit Permai, Cheras, Kuala Lumpur during the 1 st week of the
industrial training. The activities was done on Wednesday, 1 st July 2015. The slope monitoring
system equipment was installed at the hillside of Bukit Permai. The purpose of the slope
monitoring system was to get data about the movement of the soil at the hillside of Bukit Permai.
The slope monitoring system will detect reading if there is movement of the soil particle. The
reading then will be sent to the integrated circuit before being sent into the monitoring system in
the internet. There are 3 checkpoints where the slope monitoring system was installed and there
is 1 integrated circuit where all data from the 3 checkpoints will gather. All of the slope
monitoring system equipment was dismantle and brought back to the office. Example of
equipment that been dismantle was repeater, rain gauge, surface extensometers, solar panel,
industrial battery and solar charger controller.

3.2 SETUP REAL TIME MONITORING SYSTEM WASHING MACHINE.

From the 1st week until the 5th week of the industrial training, I had done work on setup real time
monitoring system washing machine for Kolej Teratai, UiTM Shah Alam.
3.2.1

Striping and crimping wire

The wires that need to be used for the circuit board of the washing machine
system must be strip at both end and then crimp one end of the wire to the wire
lug using crimping tool.

Figure 5: Striping and crimping wire

3.2.2

Connect wires to pin connector

The other end of the wire that had been strip and attach to female wire connector
is then connected to 2 and 4 pin connector.

Figure 6: Connect the other end of the wire that had been strip to the pin connector

3.2.3

Drilling parts
There upper parts of the washing machine need to be drilled back because of
manufacturing defect where the hole for the upper parts and the washing machine
cover were not at the same place to be screwed together. The cover for the main
circuit board of the washing machine also needed to be drilled back due to the
same reason as the upper parts and cover for the washing machine. The tool used
Page | 6

in both this process was automatic driller machine. This process was made at
Servco Sdn. Bhd located at Puncak Alam, Selangor.
Figure 7: Drilling circuit board cover for washing machine
Figure 8: Drilling the upper parts of the washing machine due to the manufacturing defects.

3.2.4

Assemble parts and circuit board

The upper parts and the cover of the washing machine were assembled together
and the wiring of the circuit board were connected at the factory before been
transport to Kolej Teratai, UiTM Shah Alam.

had been modified

3.2.5

Transporting washing machine

The washing machine been transported to Kolej Teratai, UiTM Shah Alam using
company van were it only can transport 2 washing machine for each trip from the
factory to UiTM. The transporting process took several weeks because of shortage
of workers and transport. The total washing machine needed to be transported was
15 washing machines.

3.2.6

Piping system
Holes needed to be drilled through the wall to make the piping system for the
washing machine which consists of inlet and outlet pipe. The holes that needed to
be drilled must be slightly bigger than the diameter of pipe used which is 40mm
PVC pipe for the outlet pipe and 15mm PVC pipe for the inlet pipe to make sure
Page | 8

the pipe can move in and out of the hole easily. The tool used to drill the holes
was rotary hammer automatic machine. After the holes been drilled, the piping
system can be done by measuring the length of the pipe needed to be used for the
pipe out for the washing machines. After the length of pipe been determined, the
40mm and 15mm PVC pipe is cut using hacksaw. T-shape connector and elbow
connector were used to connect the pipe if necessary for example to divide the
main pipe into 2 sub-main pipes, we need to use a T-shape connector.

3.2.7

Wiring system
For the wiring system, its divided into two part; wiring for socket and wiring for
the washing machine circuit. For socket wring, socket plug was used to connect
the electricity to the washing machine. One socket plug can be only used by one
washing machine to make sure there is no overpower or short circuit incident
happened which can damage the washing machine. Tapping method were used to
make new socket plug. The earth, live and neutral wire from the existing socket
plug was used to connect the new socket plug to the meter panel. This method is
called terminate. For the washing machine circuit wiring, the wire from the main

Page | 10

circuit board is connected to the Arduino board where its function as the
integrated circuit to control the washing machine.

Figure 16: Measuring length of wires that need to be use for the wiring.

Page | 11

Figure 17: All the wire in the washing machine was connected to the power supply circuit and
Arduino board.

3.2.8

Testing
The main circuit board of the washing machine is then connected to the integrated
circuit board which using an UNO Arduino board. The integrated circuit board
function as the main controller in the washing machine where it integrates the
programming to make the washing machine works and sent information to the
internet for the real time monitoring system where it used sim card with data
connection as the medium to sent the information to the internet system. The
power supply then connected to the washing machine to run test whether it can
works or not. If the washing machine can start, coin is inserted to the coin
acceptor to test the programming whether it can function or not. If the washing
machine cannot start, the wire connection of the socket plug must be checked
whether it connected to the correct terminal and if the connection of the socket
plug is correct try check the main fuse beside the electric meter panel.

3.2.9

Assemble parts
After the testing of the washing machine had been done, assemble all other parts
of the washing machine together. Example of the parts that need to assemble at
this last part was coin collector, side cover and the top cover of the washing
machine upper part. After all the part had been assembled the upper part which
consist of the integrated circuit board, coin collector, coin acceptor machine and
LED screen is locked using pad lock.

3.3 LAND PREPARATION FOR FERTIGATION FARM.

The land preparation for the fertigation farm was start at week 6 until week 10 of the
industrial training. The land preparation for the farm was divided into several works that will
be described more details below.
3.3.1

Drawing layout for the farm

The whole farm consists of fertigation system, shed, water tanks, store and NFT
system. The layout was draw using AutoCAD software. The fertigation system
covers almost of the total area of the farm.

3.3.2

Land clearing
Page | 13

The first step in the land preparation was land clearing of the field for the
fertigation system. The land clearing procedure take about one and a half week
due to the uneven ground surface, lot of stones and other construction waste been
thrown away at the field and shortage of proper tools and machine for the land
clearing activities. The tools and machine been used in the land clearing activities
was grass-cutter machine, chainsaw machine and machete. The tree that had been
cut down was gathered at one place so that it not used a lot of space at the field.

3.3.3

Figure 22: View of the field after land clearing is done

Measuring the dimension of the fertigation farm
The next step was measuring the dimension of the area that want to be use as the
fertigation farm. The dimension of the farm is 310 feet x 70 feet. The farm is
divided into three plots where each plot dimension is 100 feet x 63 feet. The tools
used to measuring the farm dimension were measuring tape and string.

Figure 23: Measuring the dimension of the farm using measuring tape and string.

3.3.4

Cut down trees for the main structure of the fertigation system
The main structures of the fertigation system used tree log with a diameter of 15
cm to 20 cm. The cutting process took place at the forest near the farm where it
takes 1 and a half week to get 300 logs of 9 feet length. For each tree that had
been cut down, the tree was measured to 9 feet length before been cut down
again. The tools and equipment used in this activity was chainsaw machine,
measuring tape, rope and machete.

Page | 15

Figure 24: The logs that had been cut down to length 9 feet were gather at one place.
3.3.5

Dug holes on the ground

The next step on the land preparation to open the fertigation system farm was to
dig holes on the ground. For the first plot of the fertigation system where the
dimension is 100 feet x 6 feet the number of holes that need to be dug was 30
holes. The 30 holes consists of the 10 holes at the beginning, 10 at the centre and
another 10 at the end of the plot where each holes had a depth of 2 feet. The
distance between one logs to another is 7 feet for the row and column. The
activity was run in two conditions manually and using machine. For the first few
days, auger machine were used to dug the holes. Due to the unsuitable soil
structure the auger machine broke down. After that, the process continue
manually using hole spade. For the second plot, only 20 holes were dug because
of the period for the industrial training had finish. This activity took 1 and a half
weeks to complete the first plot and half of the second plot.

Figure 25: Dug holes using auger machine

Page | 16

Figure 26: Dug holes manually using hole spade

3.3.6

Put logs and steel rods into the holes and cement the holes
After the holes had been dig, the logs was put into the logs together with steel
rods to ensure that when the holes been cement the cement is strong enough to
hold the load of the logs and polybags. The logs height from the top surface was
measured to 6 feet and if the height exceeds 6 feet the excess was cut down. The
process of measuring the height of the logs applies to all logs to make sure that all
the logs had the same height. After the logs been adjusted, the holes was cemented
with cement and allowed to dry for several days. The cement process does not
complete for the first plot because the industrial training had ended.

3.4 PREPARATION OF POLYBAGS AND DRIPPER SYSTEM FOR FERTIGATION

FARM.
For the preparation of the fertigation system farm equipment it takes 1 week to complete. The
process includes filling cocoa peat into the polybags and preparing the dripper system. 3000
polybags were estimate to be used in the farm with each polybag consists of 2 cucumber
trees. The cocoa peat was filled into of the polybag. The filled polybags then was arranged
at the farm according to row and column. For the dripper system, small pipe tube was used
together with the dripper. The small pipe tube was cut into 50 cm length and was inserted
into the dripper. 6000 of the dripper pipe was made because 1 dripper pipe only for 1
cucumber plant to minimize the competition for water in the polybag.

3.5 SITE VISIT AT CUCUMBER FERTIGATION FARM
The site visit took place at Teluk Panglima Garang, Selangor. This farm had been established
and run for 10 years. The site visit was done during week 6 of the industrial training which is
on Thursday, 6th August 2015. During the visit, the owner taught about how to establish
strong structures for the fertigation system especially when the system applied for the farm is
suspend the polybags to the wire. Other than that, the owner gave the schedule on when to
apply organic fertilizers and chemical fertilizers as well as the herbicide and pesticide
application to the cucumber plants.

CHAPTER 4: CONCLUSION
During 10 weeks of industrial training, I gain a lot of experience and guidance to be a
good worker. Even in a short period of industrial training, it is a valuable experience that I will
remember. The important thing that I learn from my industrial training is that time management
determined the quality of our work. I realize that time management is important in order for us to
determine and manage the time to complete the task given. Also, communication between coworkers is important to gain ideas, experience and skills from other workers and maintain a good
relationship. To summarize, even though I do my industrial training at a company with electrical
basis but, they provide me tasks related to agricultural and I learn new things other than my
course scope.
