"Will Racism End When Old Bigots Die?" Code Switch. Npr. 14 Jan. 2017. Web.
1. After a number of racial incidents and then protests last spring, Brown's new
president, Vartan Gregorian, promised a comprehensive statement on where the
university stood." [Brown #] [education]
2. The question that Shelly and Summer are tackling has been posed in many
forms for many generations. Will racism just die off with old bigots? Does the
fate of race relations lie with the children? [Will #] [poverty]
3. That idea has been milling about the public psyche for generations. It lives in
that famous (if oft-decontextualized) line: "I have a dream that my four little
children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color
of their skin but by the content of their character." [Will #] [poverty]
4. While these features of family change continue to draw media attention, African
American families, historically, have been more diverse in family structure than
the idealized norm of the nuclear family. Black families have been crafted in the
context of the remembered cultures of Africa, cultural creativity within
the United States, enslavement, racism, and persistent institutionalized
inequality. [Family #] [topic: family]
5. Family life was central to African cultures and social organization, and enslaved
Africans brought this value with them to America. However, the conditions of
enslavement often prohibited the existence of a stable African American family.
Harshness and cruelty, rape and the severing of family bonds were all too
common during enslavement, and slave marriages were not recognized by law.
Even so, strong bonds could be formed among enslaved men and women.
[Family #] [topic: family}
6. Herbert Gutman's classic work, The Black Family in Slavery and Freedom
(1976) indicates that some unions lasted 10, 15, and as many as 25 years
depending on the region and the time period. Nonetheless, kin relations rather
than marriage were the linchpin of African American families under
enslavement. This kin principle remains strong to the present. [Family #]

7. Images from the march are filled with posters proclaiming "To Hell With
Afrikaans" and "Vorster and Kruger are rubbish". This refers to John Vorster, the
prime minister of South Africa and one of apartheid's architects, and his police
minister Jimmy Kruger. [Strategic #] [topic: education]
8. The juxtaposition of these claims is an important one. It speaks to how Soweto
children began to straddle the space between local and immediate concerns and a
national political agenda. This enabled them to transcend the issues of their
classrooms and rejuvenate the struggle against apartheid on a national, and
indeed international, scale. [Strategic #][topic: education]
9. In the U.S., hate crimes against Muslims are their highest level in more than a decade,
an increase attributed to anger over terrorist attacks and anti-Islam rhetoric on the
campaign trail, as The Washington Post recently reported. [Barber #] [topic: family]
10. Anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim rhetoric increased in Canada, along with an increase in
hate incidents, Amira Elghawaby, communications director of the National Council of
Canadian Muslims, told the Middle East Eye recently, though no recent statistics
appeared to be available on the subject. [Barber #] [topic: family]
11. While President Barack Obama led the way out of financial crises through the American
Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which included $140 billion to rebuild infrastructure, the
nation is in profound need of an even more ambitious "new New Deal." A just and
equitable future depends on repairing and expanding roads and bridges, building a clean
energy infrastructure for the 21st century, and connecting all Americans to the internet.
[Mikulich #][topic: poverty]
12. A consistent political ethic of care includes international relations. You gained support
among veterans because you denounced the harsh costs of war. Catholic peace
advocates will support every effort to ameliorate war's costs by fully acknowledging and
healing post-traumatic stress disorder among our veterans and their families. Peace
advocates will challenge you to prevent and de-escalate conflict and support local
institutions that can create a lasting and just peace. [Mikulich #][topic: poverty]
