Greece awaits you to come and discover

its beauties.
I arrived at the old port quite late in the evening. Waking up the
following morning by the sun streaming through my window, I
got up to gaze out at the deep blue sea breathtaking! This was
magic indeed!
These are the images still deeply embedded in my mind Noon
and the delicious oven baked pastitsio has just come out of the
oven I wanted nothing more! This was it! I was pleasantly
trapped in its magic Enchanted indeed!
Greece, a country full of invaluable treasure.
Who said that its a poor country? On the contrary, its wealth
is unlimited; wherever you travel in this country, you can only
expect to see amazing images, hear unbelievable stories, taste excellent Mediterranean cuisine, walk along endless beaches an
integral part of its natural wealth.

A brilliant culture with global radiance and impact which was created
thousands of years ago and has left
its mark, never to fade no matter
how many years go by. Ancient
sites, cities, walls, temples, shrines
and markets. Ancient theatres, stadiums and alters all waiting for you
to discover and admire them from
your personal viewpoint.
In his walks, the visitor to this small
but beautiful country comes across
picturesque islands, traditional villages and unique cities.
If one claimed that the act of ouring was born in Greece that would
indeed not be an overstatement.
The clear sky, the fertile land and
sapphire-blue sea all blend together
to form the Greek horizon.
The deep blue ocean engulfs its islands and the mainland bridging its
multiple islands and coast, minimizing distance and making sea routes
safer and ever so pleasant.

Greece is certainly a destination

Greece a unique destination

Search through the luggage of anyone leaving Athens International Airport and you will undoubtedly find a stone, a tiny jar
with sand, something to remind them of their visit to the land
of the gods. Most importantly though, you will find the Grecian
sun in their hearts. That is the impact Greece has on its visitors!

The temples and monuments built thousands of years ago in

honor of some god or another still stand proud and never cease
to be the subject of admiration of all that visit them. Their dominance is symbolic too of the strength and the unity of the Greek
people themselves.

From a very young age at school, children are taught history and
it is the Greek history that really stays with them; mythology, the
majestic Olympus where the gods reside, the sun burning forever - warming the hearts of a most hospitable nation, the sapphire-blue sea and its endless beaches pebbled, rocky, sandy,
crowded, secluded something to cater to all tastes.

Greece is the country where the sun shines three-hundred and

sixty days in a year. How then could its people not be blessed
with warmth and a friendly, outgoing character? Visitors to Athens are fascinated by the ongoing nightlife and entertainment in
general.

The islands of Greece rocks randomly thrown into the Mediterranean Sea by Poseidon himself adorn the country, luring
its many visitors to come and get a taste of something unique, an
experience not encountered anywhere else on the planet.

Whether it is the traditional bouzoukia or the countless clubs and

cafeterias one visits, one thing is certain they know how to have
fun and put all troubles behind them.
They will deal with their issues when the sun comes up again,
marking a hopeful future, an optimistic outlook and they know
that one thing nobody can take away from them is their charisma
their love of life and living it to the fullest.
By taking along some sand or a stone or anything which ultimately reminds them of their visit to Greece, is like a pact, a
promise to come back again. Greece is definitely not a country to
visit just once in a lifetime it draws you back again and again.
The magic is there and in abundance and is ready to embrace everyone wishing to visit it, to explore it and to thoroughly enjoy it.

Attica

Attica

Attica is a place worth getting to know

It is the place where democracy, philosophy, literature and
poetry along with other arts were born. It is the very place
Athens, the birthplace of culture flourished.
The prefecture of Attica is the most densely populated prefecture of Greece. Athens is its capital city while Piraeus, is
where the largest port in Greece is located. Geographically,
the Attica Prefecture is divided into two major subsections,
the capital region and the rest of Attica. The capital region
includes both the city of Attica and Piraeus and is bound by
the Saronic Gulf and the mountains of Parnitha, Ymitos and
Penteli, thus defining the Attica Basin.
The rest of Attica covers most of the Attica Region. Moreover, Attica was the birthplace of the most important Greek
city states such as Athens, Elefsina and Megara.

Athens The City Of Light

The Athens of today has spread throughout Attica, starting
from Elefsina, where the goddess Dimitra taught the cultivation of wheat to its people, thus defining the term culture,
down to the plane of Thriasio, Skaramanga, Perama and Egaleo. It spreads on to Parnitha, Kifissia and Ekali. From Ymito
Mountain, it goes down to the Mesogia, Spata and Liosia, but
also towards Vari and Vouliagmeni. From Penteli and Dioniso it goes on to Rafina, Nea Makri and all the way to Marathona. All the above have been connected to Piraeus.
The historical centre of Athens is easily accessible to everyone
who wishes to visit Syntagma Square, the Anafiotika, Thision,
Avissinias Square and to also Psiri for some ouzo or to head
on to Ano Petralona for an aromatic cup of coffee. A visit to
Klathmonos Square and Evripidou near Syntagma is also a
must. Furthermore, one is mesmerized by the beautifully litup Acropolis at night.

Athens, according to an article in Zeit Magazine, is the new Berlin. Foreign artists are now
regularly visiting Athens, choosing the city for
their exhibitions and various events, or even as
their permanent place of residence.
And of course Athens is a true paradise for cultural tourism, a large journey into history and art.
Educational excursions, theatrical productions,
festivals, pilgrimages, visits to archaeological sites,
monuments and museums, excursions to study the
natural environment, folk art and culture these
are just a few of the many things that Greece has to
offer in the cultural tourism sector.
Traces of a centuries-old and important history
is etched in every corner of Greek land: findings from the Prehistoric and Archaic Periods,
unique works from Classical, Hellenistic, Medi-

eval and Byzantine monuments, creations from

folk art cultures, traces from the passing eons of
other civilizations and different religions, that
coexist with current creations, constructions
and modern works of art.
Whoever really wants to understand Greece, its
history and its people, he will find an unrivaled
cultural experience by traveling into the area
and chronological period of Greek culture.
The City of Piraeus
Piraeus known from ancient times as the port
of Athens - was the port which together with
Elefsina and Megara played a significant role in
trade in ancient Greek history. It always supported Athens and the Athenians always had a
soft spot for the city of Piraeus.

Today, Piraeus is one of the largest cruise ship

ports of the country and of Europe. It was Themistocles who initially discovered the importance of the port of Piraeus for Athens. The result of which was for Athens to become the head
of nautical power, having Piraeus as its port at
a time when the army had a close relationship
with naval power.
In the Marine Museum of Piraeus, the nautical
history of Greece unfolds before the eyes of the
visitor. During the summer, the sea bewitches
you. The countless beaches of Attica small,
large, sandy, pebbled, rocky, shallow, deep, isolated or cosmopolitan. One can find organized
beaches in the middle of nowhere with easy or
sometimes difficult access to them, some known
and some unknown.

Apollonos Zostiros in Vouliagmeni and last
but not least the Archaeological Museum of
Marathon which is a jewel amongst jewels.
The Eastern Attica beaches stretch all
along the coastline and there is surely one
to please even the most demanding visitor.
There are also many places to visit and
go hiking, bird-watching and fishing, the
choices are endless.
There are plans to enhance the areas of touristic interest and the projection of the areas
cultural treasures and gastronomic pleasures.
An example of some plans underway are
The Wine Route and The Mining and
Caving Route. A better understanding
into the riches of wine making will be
made along with the production or cultivation of other basic products of the area
like: oil, honey, vegetables, stock-breeding and the fishing industry. As for The
Mining and Caving Route, it is a part
of the unknown Attica, the riches below the surface of the earth, the minerals
found in the mines of Lavrion, Rafina
and Grammatiko, and the marble found
in Penteli, are surely of immense importance and of interest to many.
The many wineries of the area hold an
interest of their own; there are over 70
wineries which together produce about
70.000 hectoliters of wine.

Eastern
Attica
an
all-yearround
destination

Vineyards stretch to over 49.500 acres with a

variety of grapes being grown in its rich and
fertile soil. There are plans to have organized
tours of the wineries and have wine-tasting
events. The visitors will be able to get an insight into the whole production process.
Another plan on the table and under discussion in collaboration with the Ministry
of Culture and Sports, is of a Diving Park.
Divers will be able to visit six different areas of great archaeological interest an
Underwater Museum with 26 shipwrecks
to be explored. This will certainly put our
country on the global list of diving tourism.
However, two major issues which need
to be seen to as soon as possible are, that
the local produce should obtain a strong
international identity in other words, all
products grown or produced locally should
have a brand identity name.
Another issue is the fact that there are not
enough hotel rooms to accommodate visitors
to Eastern Attica. For the further development of its tourism, more hotel units and consequently, rooms are to be built in the area.
The development of the primary and secondary sector in Eastern Attica is progressing with the younger generation returning
to the basic fields as is agriculture, grape
cultivation and wine making.
Some, work in olive groves picking olives
for oil, others work on honey farms collecting honey and caring for the hives while
others are involved in stock-breeding.
Some prefer the secondary sector of wineries producing and bottling the wine, olive

oil production and bottling; some of these

companies are even exporting their product
abroad and doing very well indeed in it.
The development of both the primary and
the secondary sectors are of vital importance in the enhancement of the nations
economic situation.
Needless to say, it is also part of our cultural heritage and importance should be
given to it.
The development of agrotourism in Eastern Attica, through activities concerning
agriculture and our cultural environment,
our traditional cuisine and local gastronomy along with hospitality and restaurants
or traditional taverns will be given priority
as it is vital we keep its heart ticking.
Finally, it goes without saying that Attica
and especially Eastern Attica has all that is
required to host and entertain its visitors.
Having an abundance and a variety of
things for everyone to see and do, coupled
with an excellent climate and access to a
most natural environment.
The local cuisine which is closely related to the world renowned and respected
Mediterranean Diet and its exquisite archaeological sites and temples, festivities
and cultural events along with so many
other activities to enjoy, is surely enticing
enough and reason for everyone to consider Attica for their destination.
Every effort is being made in order to
project Eastern Attica internationally and
make it known as the destination worth
visiting all year round.

In our effort to find relevant information

to write about Attica and give our readers
a better insight of the area and issues concerning it, we spoke to Mr. Petros Filippou,
the Deputy District Commissioner for Eastern Attica and asked him to tell us about
the places which are of interest to our visitors from abroad.
Every effort is being made in order to gradually and methodically do what is best for the
district and resolve all issues in the best possible way, said Mr. Filippou.
Priorities and goals have been set in the areas
of upgrading the touristic product by organizing events which bring out the historical, environmental, cultural and productive wealth
of Attica. Moreover, emphasis is being given
to the fact that Attica is an all-year-round
destination offering the visitor a multitude of
things to do and see.
Another goal set, is to enhance and develop
the areas of agriculture, stock breeding, fishing and honey farming; all able to boost not
only the local community but also the nation
as a whole.
The area of Eastern Attica is where Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport is located,
two main ports Rafina and Lavrio ports
which connect the mainland to Evia and
many of the Aegean Islands.
One cannot ignore the fact that the area is
also exceptionally rich in historical interest
sites. To mention but a few of these amazing and most significant sights, there is the

Attica

Western Attica
It is part of the region of Attica. The capital of the regional unit is the town of Elefsina.
The regional unit covers the western part of the agglomeration of Athens, and the area
to its west.
Elefsina resembles a palimpsest manuscript. The history engraved on it, repeated layers of writing, composing in the centuries run a long and enchanting novel. Flourishing
settlements, fortifications and spaces of religious worship were developed in this place
during antiquity but also in modern times. This historical period is easily interpreted
because of the favorable location of the town; a vital point from where main road arteries
pass and connect Attica to the rest of Greece. At the same time, its harbor secured from
the winds in a closed gulf, constitutes an exit of marine communication and a node of
transit trade. To these factors the fact of disposal of fertile, cultivable land at Thriasio
Pedio, should be added. The Eleusinian river Kifissos, nowadays called Sarantapotamos,
crossed this important granary of Attica.
The city of Elefsina, was built around the sanctuary and temple of Dimitra, the goddess of
agriculture, dates back to the Mycenaean era. During the classical period, the city was the
site of the Eleusian Festival when thousands of pilgrims walked the sacred way from the
Acropolis to be indoctrinated into the ancient mysteries. To divulge the secret of the Eleusinian Mysteries was punishable by death and for 1400 years these secrets were known only to
the initiates. The site was the second most important in ancient Greece, after Delphi.

This amazing, blessed country is an all-year-round destination;
there are places to visit on the mainland and countless things
to do and see. Are you in for skiing, mountaineering, rafting or

Then again, you may just want to visit some excellent archaeological sites, ancient monasteries or just take a relaxing drive
around the country. Whatever you are up to, Greece is where
you want to be!
Together, we will take a drive starting from Athens, the capital,
and take the national road going north. Well go through Thebes,
a region known through the legend of Oedipus. It now prides
itself to have a most fertile land where crops of cotton, potatoes
and tobacco flourish.

Levadia, the busy capital of Boeotia, is our next destination as it
is where the hot springs (piges), can be found. They are called
Lethe and Mnemosyne or otherwise, Oblivion and Remembrance. Today we can still see the old stone arch bridge which
was build during the Ottoman Empire. Further north, we come
to the monastery of Osios Loukas its Byzantine architecture is
awe-inspiring and worth a visit.
Its impossible to drive through and not stop at the ancient site
of Delphi! A visit to the Sanctuary of the goddess Athena and
the temple of Apollo. Delphi was also believed to have been the
centre of the universe in ancient times and still holds a magic of
its own. Some say that they can feel the magnetic powers of the
area there. All you need to do, is go and experience it for yourself. The Delphi Museum is also one of the places you should not
refrain from visiting; people from all over visit it in order to take
in all its glorious history.
Going much farther up, we come to Epirus Ioannina, Metsovo
and the Meteora mountains. Sit by any one of the traditional taverns at the lake of Ioannina and enjoy their homemade pies or if
you are into rafting thats where you want to be!
Metsovo is yet another most picturesque village which cascades
down a mountain at 3.300 feet above sea level. Metsovo cheese

Meteora, which actually means hanging in mid-air, is breathtaking!

A luxury sailing vacation in to the Greek islands offers stunning natural beauty, cultural

vacations, namely the Cyclades, the Dodecanese, the Ionian, the Saronic and the Sporades Islands, all of which are easily accessed
so your sailing vacation can start immediately.
Furthermore, the islands are close by, making
it ideal for those that wish to enjoy sailing but
at the same time explore different places and
enjoy the night life most of these islands have

Cyclades Islands Yacht Charter:

The most famous island group in the Aegean Sea is comprised of some of the
most beautiful islands in the world! Gorgeous sandy beaches, architecture in
white and blue, traditional lifestyle, folk music, warm, hospitable people and
barren landscapes with isolated chapels, turn a trip to the Cyclades into a lifetime experience.
The name Cyclades refers to the islands forming a circle (the name in English
means: circular islands) around the sacred island of Delos. According to Greek
mythology, Poseidon, God of the sea, furious at the Cyclades nymphs, turned
them into islands.
Millions of Greek and foreign visitors visit the Cyclades every year to enjoy the
dazzling light and the crystal clear blue waters, in their quest of a paradise on
earth.
Dodecanese Islands Yacht Charter:
The Dodecanese Islands in south-eastern Aegean is the sunniest corner in
Greece. Twelve large islands and numerous smaller ones with crystal clear waters, sandy or pebbly beaches, important archaeological finds, imposing Byzantine and medieval monuments and unique traditional settlements are waiting
to be discovered.

Cruises

If you are desperately seeking to discover lesser-known, unspoiled destinations visit Leros or Pserimos. But there is always Rhodes and Kos,
larger and more cosmopolitan islands awaiting to offer you lasting, and
treasured memories. a two week sailing itinerary is recommended for
this area.

Saronic Islands Yacht Charter:

Aegina, Agkistri, Spetses, Hydra, Poros, Salamina and the peninsula of
Methana form the island complex of the Argosaronic Gulf in southern
Greece.
Scattered over the Argosaronic Gulf and steeped in ancient mythology,
these islands are small havens close to Athens. Daily ferry connection
from the port of Piraeus makes them a lovely, easily accessible all-yearround destination for the Athenians. Visitors here will enjoy natural
beauty, historical treasures, unique architecture, and glamorous, yet a
romantic atmosphere.
Sporades Islands Yacht Charter:
The Northern Sporades is made up of 24 islands, only four of which are
inhabited; Alonnisos, Skiathos, Skopelos, and Skyros.
The Sporades are fertile and heavily wooded, with pine-forested mountains sloping down to some of the best beaches in the Aegean, and the
local architecture is more characteristic of Northern Greece, with less
whitewashing and more stone roofs. Skiathos is the best known and easiest to get to; it is thus the most crowded, with throngs of visitors arriving
all summer. Skopelos, while just as attractive, is less touristy outside of
July and August, while Alonnisos is much quieter.

Ionian Islands Yacht Charter:

The Ionian Islands refer to the chain of Greek Islands stretching along
the west coast of Greece in the Ionian Sea. The islands are well known for
their beautiful sandy beaches, crystal clear waters, architecture, charming villages and stunning scenic countryside which is verdant and flourishing with greenery and nature.
Each Ionian island has a distinct character. The islands are also known
by their Italian names. These islands are known to be covered with green
unlike the Cyclades, which is due to rareness of rain. Historically, these
islands had a common fate, especially the three major islands of Corfu,
Cefalonia and Zante.

Popular for romantics

Popular for romantics and history lovers alike, a Greek cruise will get
you up close and personal with the ancient world. Ports on the mainland include Athens, Greeces capital, as well as Gythion and Katakolon, the gateway to Olympia. Each Greek Isle has its own feel. Look
for nightlife in Mykonos and sunsets in Santorini; many cruises stay
late to take advantage. You wont find a better beach spot than Corfu,
and Old Town in Rhodes is a shoppers dream.
Eastern Mediterranean Cruise Lines
When sailing the Eastern Mediterranean, cruisers are spoiled for
choice. Big ships tend to visit big ports -- the greatest hits of the
Eastern Mediterranean destinations, such as Venice, Athens and Istanbul. Almost all major lines offer such sailings, including Celebrity,
Holland America, Princess, Royal Caribbean and Disney.
For a more European feel, consider cruising the region with a company
based on the continent. Costa and MSC Cruises, both headquartered in
Italy, offer shorter and often cheaper itineraries (as well as great pasta).
British lines P&O, Thomson and Cunard have numerous sailings, while
the German line Hapag-Lloyd provides the ultimate in luxury.

Based in Athens, Celestyal Cruises offers both short and long cruises
around the Med and Variety has yacht-style sailings to small Greek
islands that arent served by larger ships.
Luxury vessels also ply this region of the Med, including Regent Seven Seas, Azamara, Crystal, Silversea, Oceania and Seabourn. Often,
these voyages not only visit smaller ports like Hvar, Split, Mykonos,
Santorini and Cyprus, but theyre longer in duration, also traveling to
the Western Mediterranean.
Eastern Mediterranean Cruise Tips
Read up. With so many old civilizations in one region, its easy to get
disoriented. A little bit of advance reading, be it fiction or nonfiction,
could go a long way in terms of preparation.
Drink up. The sun can be brutal in the Med during the heat of summer. Make sure you bring plenty of bottled water, and hydrate frequently.
Lace up. The terrain at ancient sites can be dusty and uneven. Youll
want shoes with some traction; its not the place for flimsy footwear.

Greece...
42 a country full of invaluable treasures

Greek
products
are
exported
all over
the world

The list goes on and on. What one has

to do when visiting a particular area in
Greece is to ask what they specialize in
and enjoy it.
At the mention of mousaka, one immediately thinks of Greece, however,
this is but one of the many delicious
dishes one can enjoy at any one of the
many traditional restaurants and tavernas which pride themselves in their
cuisine and service.
Throughout the years, it was inevitable
for Greece to be influenced by its many
occupants one might think. There has
surely been some influence or another in Greek cookery, but one is not to
think that the Greek cuisine has not

itself travelled and influenced other

countries who have not failed to recognize its significance and uniqueness.
Greek products are exported all over
the world and have become staples in
the diet of people globally. Greek yoghurt being one of these even considered to be on the list of super foods
it is known for its smooth texture and
thickness, unlike the runny yoghurt
found in other countries. Whether
the secret is in the milk it is used to be
made or in the method of making it, is
of no consequence the fact remains
that Greeks know their food and have
taught many nations the importance of
good nutrition and a balanced diet.

The Mediterranean Diet is globally accepted and considered to be of the best.

Based on all food groups and in the right quantities, it guarantees longevity and
good health. Cereals, fruit and vegetables, meat and fish, dairy products and top
of the food pyramid in significantly smaller portions are sugars and fats.
The Greek cuisine is based on that nutritional pyramid and that is what makes
it stand out, not only for its unique recipes but also the fact that it is a healthy
diet, nourishing the organism with all that it needs to be healthy. In Greece, one
will find an abundance of fruit, olives, vegetables, legumes, beans, fish and many
other basics used in the Greek cuisine.
Each place has its own traditional delicacy; olive oil from Kalamata, honey from
Crete, mastic from Chios, pies from Ikaria made from the wild greens that are
hand-picked from the mountains and fields, papalina from Lesvos raw freshly-caught sardines cooked in salt which make an excellent accompaniment to
ouzo, another exclusively Greek drink which aromatizes the mouth and sends
your senses off to delirious levels. Feta cheese made from both goats and cows
milk is an unbeatable source of calcium. Tomato croquettes from Serifos and
Sifnos.

Greek wines are

among the best in the world with varieties differing significantly

depending on the area where the grapes are grown. Moreover,
wine is among the primary elements in the Greek diet; it is considered to be more than an accompaniment to a meal it is a
mild sedative and as many doctors will readily confirm, a glass of
wine a day extends life and improves our overall health.
The countrys geography is so varied, thus making the varieties
of grapes so unique, contributing to the exceptional flavor and
aroma of one of the worlds most renowned wines. It has become
a serious competitor to the wines of countries which were once
considered to hold the prize for the best quality and varieties.
Throughout the country, Greek vineyards have developed and
have massively improved not only their quality but also the
method of wine production since the younger generation have
taken over from their parents and have considerably altered the
whole process of production. Modern equipment and new methods have been applied, increasing production and improving the
quality of not only the grapes but of the actual wine-making process itself.
Starting from September, the month when grapes are harvested,
otherwise called the Trygos period, the rush of producing one
of the worlds best wines begins.
