Robert Kappel, is an economist and a political scientist.
From 2004 until 2011 he was president of the GIGA. He is a
professor at the Universities of Hamburg and Leipzig, and a
senior research fellow at the GIGA. His research focuses on
global power shifts, BRICS and innovation systems. His latest

Prof. Dr. Dirk Nabers


Dirk Nabers is Professor of International Political Sociology
at the University of Kiel, Germany, since 2010. Previously, he
has been an Academic Director of the Hamburg International
Graduate School for the Study of Regional Powers and Head
of the Research Programme on IR at the GIGA German Institute
of Global and Area Studies. He specializes in poststructuralist
IR, and sociology in IR. He has published widely on IR theory,
metatheory, security studies, and regionalism, in journals
such as Review of International Studies, International Studies
Perspectives, Foreign Policy Analysis, International Studies Review,
Cooperation and Conict, and others.

Prof. Dr. Anja Jetschke


Prof. Dr. Anja Jetschke holds the Chair of International
Relations at the University of Goettingen. Her research
interests include comparative transitional justice research
and comparative regionalism. In the Comparative Regional
Organization Project (CROP) she is currently collecting data
on the institutional design of regional organizations. Her
latest publications include "Diffusing Regional Integration:
The EU and East Asia, in: West European Politics, 35, 1, 174191 (with Philomena Murray)" and "ASEAN-EU-relations:
from regional integration support to security relevance, GIGA

Dr. Sandra Destradi


Sandra Destradi has been working as a research fellow at
the GIGA Institute of Asian Studies since 2009. Her research
focuses on regional security and regional powers, with a
special interest in South Asia and in the foreign policy of
India. Moreover, she is interested in the topic of conflict
management in intra-state conicts and has recently directed a
project on the consequences of mediation failure in civil wars.
Her research has been published, among others, in Review of
International Studies, Democratization and Asian Survey.

Dr. des. Nadine Godehardt


Dr. des. Nadine Godehardt is currently researcher at
StiftungWissenschaft und Politik / German Institute for
International and Security Affairs, Asia Division. She worked
as researcher at GIGA German Institute of Global and Area
Studies from 2008 till 2012. Her dissertation thesis deals
with Chinas foreign policy in Central Asia and questions of
regions/regionalism. Her current research interests include
Chinas foreign and security policy, Chinas relations to
Greater Central Asia, International Relations Theory and the
constitutions of (international) regions.

Nicola Nymalm, M.A., M.P.S.


Nicola Nymalm is a research fellow and doctoral candidate
at the GIGA Institute of Asian Studies and at Kiel
University. Currently she is also a research assistant to the
Chair of International Relations at the Helmut Schmidt
University of the Federal Armed Forces in Hamburg.
She holds an M.A. in Contemporary History, Chinese
Studies and European Law from the Humboldt-University
in Berlin, and a Masters in Peace and Security Studies
from the University of Hamburg. Her areas of research include US-Chinese
relations, US-Japanese economic relations, political theory and history of
ideas, political discourse theory and analysis. In her dissertation-thesis, From
Japan-Problem to China Threat? She focuses on the economic discourses
on Japan and China in the United States. Her Ph.D. project receives funding
from the Finnish Cultural Foundation/Helsinki.

Hannes Ebert, M.A.


Hannes Ebert is currently a research fellow at GIGA and
pursues his PhD on regional power and contestation in
South Asia.His previous work experience includes analyzing
conicts and fragile statehood in South Asia with the Londonbased International Institute for Strategic Studies and the
Berlin-based German Institute for International and Security
Affairs and Global Public Policy Institute. Hannes was a
visiting fellow at the China Study Center in Islamabad and
the Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses in Delhi. He has also worked for
Harvard Universitys Center for European Studies. Hannes holds a Masters
in International Relations Theory from the London School of Economics and
completed his undergraduate studies in politics and international law at the
FreieUniversitt in Berlin and the Graduate Institute in Geneva.

Dr. Cheng Weidong ()
Prof. Cheng is Professor of European Union Law and Deputy
Director of the Institute of European Studies, Chinese Academy
of Social Sciences (CASS). He got his Ph.D. of Law at Wuhan
University (China) in 2010, visited Lauterpacht Research Center
for International law at University of Cambridge from 2002
to 2003 as a research fellow, and did Post-doctoral research at
University of Aix-Marseille III, France from 2004 to 2005. His
studies focus on European Union law and international law. He
published several books, including European Market Integration: Market Freedom and
Law and European Legal Innovation.

Dr. Cui Hongjian ()


Mr. Cui studied philosophy (Bachelor), politics (Master) and
international relations (Ph.D.). He worked as a research fellow
in China Institute of International Studies (CIIS) from 1998
and served as Head of the Political Affairs in the Chinese
Consulate General to Mumbai between 2004 and 2007. He
became the Director of European Studies in CIIS and Senior
Fellow in 2009, also the senior member of China European
Studies Society. Cuis recent work includes Reports on European Energy Diplomacy
in Central Asia Area and China-EU Cooperation (2010), Europes International Role
and Influence (2012-2013) and China-EU Relations Annual Reports in Blue Book of
CIIS since 2009 till now.

Dr. Hu Shisheng ()
Dr. Hu is a Senior Research Fellow and Director of the Institute
for South & Southeast Asian and Oceania Studies at China
Institutes of Contemporary International Relations (CICIR).
Hu received B.A. in Hindi Language and Literature and
M.A. in Sanskrit and Bali Languages and Literature in Dept.
of Oriental Studies at Peking University. He received Ph.D.
in International Politics & Relations on ethnic and religious
issues from CICIR in 2006. In 2004, he was a visiting scholar at
John Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). He is the author
of Tibetans in Exile: the Construction of Group Identities and Its Embarrassment (2008).
His recent research focuses on South Asia security issues.

Prof. Pang Xun ( )


Dr. Pang is Associate Professor of the Department of
International Relations at Tsinghua University. She gained her
Ph.D. in political science at Washington University in St. Louis
and then served as a tenure-track assistant professor of Politics
at Princeton University from 2010 to 2012. Her research and
teaching interests are centered around Bayesian statistics,
Markov Chain Monte Carlo simulation, international and
comparative political economy, and international cooperation.
She is the deputy director of the Carnegie-Tsinghua Center for
Global Policy.

Prof. Sun Xuefeng ()


Dr. Sun is Associate Professor of International Relations and
Executive Deputy Dean of the Department of International
Relations at Tsinghua University. Since 2006 he has served
as executive editor of Chinese Journal of International Politics
(SSCI, Oxford University Press) and board member for the
International Journal of Diplomacy and Economy from 2011. His
recent publications include: International Legitimacy and Rise
of Great Powers: Chinese Perspectives (2012); Dilemma of China's
Rise (2011); China and East Asian Regional Order: A Reader

Dr. Zhai Kun ()


Dr. Zhai is currently the Director of Institute of World Political
Studies of China Institutes of Contemporary International
Relations (CICIR) since 2011. He was the Director of South and
Southeast Asian and Oceanian Studies of CICIR from 2007 to
2011. Zhai is the council member of China People's Institute of
Foreign Affairs (CPIFA) and also the Deputy President of China
Association of Southeast Asian Studies. His main research elds
are Global and Strategic issues and Asia-Pacic Studies.

Prof. Zhang Xiaoming ()
Dr. Zhang is Professor of International Relations at School
of International Studies, Peking University. He was
educated at Peking University (BA in 1985, MA in 1988 and
Ph.D. in 1993). His recent book publicized in Chinese is:
An Introduction to the History of US-East Asia Relations
(2011). He was a fellow of Cold War International History
Project at Woodrow Wilson Center (1994), fellow of
Korea Foundation at Korea University (1998), Fulbright
scholar at Harvard University (1999-2000), guest researcher at Stockholm
International Peace Research Institute (2000), visiting professor at Chuo
University, Japan (2005), and visiting senior scholar at London School of
Economics (LSE) (2007-2008).

Prof. Qin Yaqing ()
Prof. Qin is Executive Vice President and Professor of
International Studies of CFAU, Vice-president of China
National Association for International Studies (CNAIS); and
China Country Coordinator for the Network of East Asia
Think Tanks (NEAT). He was on the resource team for the UN
High Panel for Challenges, Threats, and Changes (2003) and
worked as Special Assistant to the Chinese Eminent Person,
China-ASEAN Eminent Persons Group (2005). He served as
member of the editorial board of Global Governance and sits on the international
advisory board for the policy analysis series of the West-East Center, USA, and
got his Ph. D. in Political Science at University of Missouri-Columbia, U.S.A. and
received training in international economy at Antwerp University, Belgium. Qin
has published extensively, including translated IR classics such as Twenty Years
Crisis, Social Theory of International Politics (2003), and Perception and Misperception
in International Politics (2003).

Prof. Zhu is Vice President of CFAU, Professor of International


Studies, Secretary-General of China National Association for
International Studies (CNAIS), board member of Guiding
Committee of History Teaching of the Ministry of Education
in China, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Foreign Affairs Review.
She earned her B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Nankai
University (Tianjin) and CFAU (Beijing). She was a Fulbright
visiting scholar from 2003 to 2004 at the Elliott School of
International Affairs of George Washington University. Her research focuses on
China's foreign policy and its relations with international society. Her recent
publications include: China and International System: Processes and Practices, 2012;
International Structuration in Practice: Two Mechanisms, World Economics
and International Politics, 2012;China and International System: Mutual Way of
Socialization and Logic of Practicality, Foreign Affairs Review, 2012.

Prof. Wang Fan ()


Prof. Wang is Assistant President of CFAU, Deputy SecretaryGeneral of CNAIS, standing director of China's Association
of Foreign Affairs and the Association of Disarmament and
Arms Control of China. He received his B.A. in Information
Management from Peking University in 1986, his M.A.
in International Relations in 1991 from the University
of International Relations and his Ph.D. in International
Relations from CFAU in 2002. He was in the Chinese Embassy
to the U.K. (1995~1997), a visiting professor to Long Island University in the U.S.A.
(2003~2004). He recently published a book, US Strategy toward China in the Medium
and Long-Term (2012).

Prof. Gao Fei ()


Prof. Gao is Associate Professor of the Diplomacy Department
of CFAU, director of Center for China Diplomacy Studies,
deputy secretary-general of CNAIS. He graduated from
Peking University in 1998, once a visiting professor of the
University of Strasbourg in France, and a Fulbright visiting
scholar in George Washington University in the U.S.. His
recent publications include: "An Exploration of China's 'New
Diplomacy' through Shanghai Cooperation Organization
(SCO), International Politics Quarterly, 2012.

Dr. JI is Deputy Director of East Asian Studies Center of
CFAU. She obtained Ph.D. degree in International Relations
from CFAU. She was a visiting Fulbright scholar at Fletcher

2010-2011. Her research interests include international
relations theory and East Asian Studies. Her recent

Prof. Qu Bo ()
Prof. Qu is Associate Professor and Deputy Director of
Institute of International Studies (IIS), CFAU. He holds a Ph.D.
from Peking University. His research focuses on international
political economy, global economic governance, political
economy of international monetary system, and Chinas
political economy transition. He has worked in Oxford and
Princeton University as post-doctoral fellow. Now, he serves
as member of Institutional Governance Council of World
Economic Forum and associate research fellow at Global Economic Governance
Programme, Oxford.

Prof. Xiong Wei ()


Prof. Xiong is Associate Professor of Diplomatic Studies at
CFAU. He received his Ph.D. degree from Peking University.
He was in M.A. Program of European Culture and Economy
at Ruhr University of Bochum, Germany (2001~2002). He
also did his dissertation research at Free University of Berlin
(2004~2005). Later, he served as Second Secretary (Political) in
Chinese Embassy in Berlin (2009~2011). He published articles
and books on Diplomatic Studies, German politics and SinoEU relations. Xiong is now Deputy Director of Academic Programs Management
Ofce (CFAU) and Executive Director of Research Center for Beijing International
Exchanges and Foreign Affairs Administration.

Ms. Li Li ()
Li Li, 2011-2012 China-U.S. Fulbright Ph.D. Candidate in
Political Science, jointly trained by the Institute of International
Studies (IIS) of CFAU and the Political Science Department
of University of Connecticut (UConn), the U.S.A. She got
her B.A. in English, second B.A. in Diplomacy, M.A. in
International Relations (IR) and is now a Ph.D. candidate
in IR at the IIS of CFAU. She has been Academic Research

Mr. Tong Wei ()


Tong Wei, graduated with a B.A. of Arts from Sichuan

National Ethnical Development in the Development Research
