WINTERGARDEN.
ZANE GREY'S "WHITE DEATH."
The Great Barrier Reef ! Hayman Island ! Nature's beauty spot and playground selected from all
the South Sea Islands to provide a back ground for Australia's first romantic
comedy-drama Zane Grey's "White Death " which will be presented at the Wintergarden
Theatre today (matinee and night). It is a story of man's fight against the devils of the deep, revenge
against the giant "White Death," ruthless killer and most deadly of all sharks. And so the film unit
landed on Hayman Island, a mountain peak ris ing conspicuously from among a score of coral
islands ; a virgin Isle, if ever there was one, fasclnating In its sheer ruggedness and made pictur esque
by snow-white mountain goats and screeching, brilliant-hued cocka toos. On this isle a canvas film
colony was erected, to which the party returned each evening after the day's "shooting." One of the
first scones to be " shot " was the native corro-boree, which 20 aborigines put on for the benefit of the
cameras ; it was
shot at night, with the aid of photo-flares. Through a series of this "nlght-shootlng" production was
kept well up to schedule, for when
an overcast sky or a gusty wind pre vented a day's shooting some of the crew would hike over the
coral reefs. Apart from the beautiful sea gardens It forms, the coral provides a fascin ating Interest for
the strange sea life It harbours, although the utmost care had to be taken to avoid any contact with a
poisonous shell-fish, commonly known as "The Paralyser." With a cone-shaped shell two or three
Inches in length this fish,, when irritated, shoots forth a short quill, an injection from which causes
complote paralysis and a resultant death in eight hours. Zane Grey is at the head of the
cast, with Nola Warren, Alfred Frith, and John Weston in support. "THE COUNTRY BEYOND." A
real life drama of dogdom is find ing its counterpart in motion pictures, as Buck, giant St Bernard star
of " Call of the Wild," returns to the screen as the canine hero of "The Country Beyond," the big
assooiate attraction for today at the Wintergar den Theatre. In the picture, which features Rochelle
Hudson, Paul Kelly, and Robert Kent, Buck's Bav-age enemy Is a Great Dane named Prince, dramatic
hlghspot of the story. Adapted from James Oliver Curwood's thrilling novel, "The Coun try Beyond,"
it presents Buck aB a heroic dog which helps a "Mounfie"
to bring a killer to justice and find romance in the trackless north woods. Eugene Forde directed the
picture, ably adapted by Scenarist Lamar Trottl and produced under the super vision of Sol M.
Wurtzel. Rochelle Hudson has the leading feminine role in the picture with Paul Kelly, Robert Kent,
Alan Hale, and Alan Dineheart in the all-star supporting cast.' " Honolulu, Paradise Island of the
Pacific" (Travel Talk in colour) and News will be' included.
