The1800s

1846:ConstructionbeginsforthefirstProvincialLunaticAsylumona50acreportionoftheGarrisonReserve(Militaryproperty).The
architectwasJohnGeorgeHoward.
August22,1846:TheofficiallayingofthecornerstonebytheHonourableChiefJusticeJohnBeverlyRobinson.
January26,1850:ProvincialLunaticAsylumopensitsdoorstoitsfirst211patients,transferredfromtheTemporaryAsylum,whichwas
housedinaformerjailonKingStreet.

1851:TheTorontoarchitecturefirmofCumberlandandRidoutisengagedtodesignawallwithlodgesandanentrancegatearoundthe
asylum.
18531875:Dr.JosephWorkmanistheasylumsMedicalSuperintendent.
18661869:Newlyconstructedeastandwestwingsaddtomainasylumbuildingtotrytoeasesevereovercrowding.
18711905:ThenameoftheasylumisnowAsylumfortheInsane,Toronto.
18881889:Followingthegovernmentssaleof23acresofthesitefordevelopment,theeastandwestwallsaremovedandrebuiltusing
originalmaterials.Thesiteisnow27acres,thesizeitistoday.


1889:Twonewbrickworkshopbuildings(extant)areconstructedforusebystaffandpatients.
1891:AnewAsylumfortheInsane,MimicoopensasabranchoftheQueenStreetasylum.

The1900s
19051911:Dr.CharlesKirkClarke,MedicalSuperintendentofthenownamedHospitalfortheInsane,Torontorecommendssellingand
relocatingtheovercrowded,poorlymaintainedfacility,withoutsuccess.
1919:AnewfacilityinWhitbyopenstoreplacetheoneonQueenStreethowever,bothcontinuetobeutilized.
1919:NownamedtheOntarioHospital,Toronto.
1954:ConstructionofanewQueenStreetAdministrationBuildingbegins.
1956:TheQueenStreetAdministrationBuildingiscomplete.

1964:TheMinistryofHealthannouncesplanstoreplacetheQueenStreetasylumstructureswithnewbuildingsonthesamesite.
1966:NamechangestoQueenStreetMentalHealthCentre.

1970:Constructionofnewunitsbegins.
1972:ActiveTreatmentUnits1and2andthePaulChristieCommunityCentreopen.
1974:ActiveTreatmentUnits3and4arecomplete.
1976:The1850asylumbuildingisdemolished.
1978:TheformerSuperintendentsResidence(laterNursesResidence)isdemolished.
1979:TheJosephWorkmanAuditoriumopens.
1979:Theinfamous999QueenStreetaddresschangesto1001inanefforttosymbolicallydisconnectthenewcentrefromitsstigmatized
past.
1979:TheAsylumfortheInsane,Mimico,renamedastheLakeshorePsychiatricHospitalin1966,isclosedandpartlyremergeswith
QueenStreet.
1997:TheHealthServicesRestructuringCommission(HSRC)releasesitsreport,whichincludeschangestoaddictionsandmentalhealth
care.
1998:TheCentreforAddictionandMentalHealth(CAMH)isformedfromthemergeroftheQueenStreetMentalHealthCentre,theClarke
InstituteofPsychiatry,theAddictionResearchFoundation,andtheDonwoodInstitute.
2000toPresent
19992001:CAMHsfoundingPresidentandCEO,Dr.PaulGarfinkelinitiatescomprehensivevisioningworkshopsessionsand
consultationswithhundredsofkeystakeholders.StudyrecommendsthecreationofacentralhubforCAMHattheQueenStreetsite.
2001:TheVisionandMasterPlanoutlinethetransformationoftheQueenStreetsiteintoanurbanvillageamixofCAMHandnon
CAMHuseswithparksandnewthroughstreetsfullyintegratedwiththelargercommunity.
2001:TheC3Consortium(MontgomerySisamArchitects,KuwabaraPayneMcKennaBlumbergArchitects,andKearnsManciniArchitects)
isselectedforarchitecture/engineeringofthenewCAMH.
2002:AFacilitiesMasterPlanandCAMHsupdatedFunctionalProgramaresubmittedtotheMinistryofHealthandLongTermCarefor
approval.
2004:TheMinistryapprovesCAMHsupdatedFunctionalProgram.
2004:CAMHsplantocreateanintegratedcommunitywinsexcellenceawardsfromtheCanadianInstituteofPlannersandtheOntario
ProfessionalPlannersInstitute.

2005:Together,CAMHandUrbanStrategiesreceivetheCityofTorontoArchitectureandUrbanDesignAwardsHonourableMention.
2005:TheProvinceannouncesapprovalandfundingforPhase1AofCAMHsQueenStreetredevelopment.

April6,2006:TheofficialgroundbreakingforPhase1AinauguratesthestartofconstructionforthisfirstphaseoftheQueenStreet
RedevelopmentProject.
April7,2008:ThefournewbuildingsofPhase1Ahavebeencompletedandareoperational.

June26,2008:CAMHcelebrateswithagrandopeningofPhase1AofitsRedevelopmentProject,TransformingLivesHere.
July4,2008:InfrastructureOntarioannouncesaRequestforQuote(RFQ)forcompaniestosubmittheirqualificationstodesign,build,
finance,andmaintainthenextphasePhase1BofCAMHsRedevelopmentProject.
May2009:APhase1Abuildingisofficiallynamed,TheMcCainBuildingafterMichaelMcCainandhisfamilyinrecognitionoftheirsupport
oftheCAMHRedevelopmentProjectthefirsteverbuildingtobenamedafteradonor.
June15,2009:FollowingacompetitiveprocessforthefirstnonCAMHbuildingonsite,CAMHacceptsaletterofintentfrom
Forum/VerdiroctoleaseCAMHpropertytodevelopandoperateamixedusebuilding,includingaffordablehousingandstreetlevelretail.

June27,2009:CAMHsPhase1AreceivestheInternationalAcademyforDesignandHealths2009AcademyAwardforMentalHealth
Design.
September25,2009:Today,theofficialinaugurationofthePaulE.GarfinkelParktakesplace.Thisparkisthenortheastblockofthesite
that,earlierthisspring,CAMHhandedovertotheCityofTorontoasapublicpark.
October29,2009:Decommissioningceremonyforthe1956AdministrationBuilding.
December18,2009:CarillionHealthSolutionsisawardedthecontracttodesign,build,finance,andmaintainthePhase1Bbuildings.
February24,2010:Demolitionofthe1956AdministrationBuilding,tomakewayforPhase1Bconstruction,begins.

April6,2010:OfficialgroundbreakingceremonyforPhase1B.
September2010:Forum/VerdirocbeginsconstructiononthefirstnonCAMHbuilding,locatedatQueenStreetWestandOssingtonAvenue.

September17,2010:UnveilingceremonyofninememorialplaquesinstalledalongtheCAMHhistoricwallinhonourofasylumpatients
whoselabourwasusedtobuildthewall.

October7,2010:CAMHlaunchesastreetnamingcontesttonameNewStreet,oneoffivenewpublicstreetsbeingcreatedaspartofthe
RedevelopmentProjecttoconnectthesitewiththesurroundingcommunity.
January11,2011:CAMHcelebratesthe'ToppingOff'oftheGatewayBuildingoneofthethreenewbuildingsofPhase1Batradition
onconstructionsites,signifyingthatthehighestpointofabuildinghasbeenreached.Theeventisalsodepictedinthisvideo.

May11,2011:TheCAMHFoundationannouncesthatithasexceededitsgoalof$100millionfortheTransformingLivesCampaign,
raisingmorethan$108million,withthehelpofa$10milliongiftfromBellCanada.TheannouncementincludesthenamingoftheBell
GatewayBuilding.
June22,2011:CAMHreceivesstreetnamingapprovalsfromtheCityofTorontotoapplythenameStokesStreettoNewStreet,inhonour
ofProfessorAldwynB.StokesandtorenameFreedomStreettoLowerOssingtonAvenue.
September8,2011:ShoppersDrugMarthasagreedtobeananchortenantinthenewnonCAMHbuildingtheOssingtonQueenStreet
RentalApartments.
September27,2011:OnSeptember23,PremierDaltonMcGuintyvisitedCAMHwithnewsoftheapprovalofthethirdphaseofCAMHs
visionaryQueenStreetRedevelopmentProject.
November16,2011:TheBeamishandLabattfamilieswererecognizedwithawingoftheIntergenerationalWellnessCentrebeing
namedaftereachfamily.

April23,2012:AmosaicartprojecttobedisplayedinthenewIntergenerationalWellnessCentrebecomesacommunitycollaboration.
June21,2012:OutdoorGrandOpeningCelebrationmarkstheofficialopeningofthethreenewCAMHbuildingsofPhase1Bofthe
RedevelopmentProject.CAMHalsohoststhededicationofthecornerstoneofthenewBellGatewayBuilding,alongwithanunveilingofthe
returnofthe1846CornerstonePlaquesfromtheoriginal'ProvincialLunaticAsylum.

September2012:CAMHphysicians,collectivelyknownasTheAssociates,arehonouredfortheircontributionstoCAMHastheUtilitiesand
ParkingBuildingat101StokesStreetisnamedtheDoctorsAssociationBuilding.
2013:Thesilvercornerstoneplaquesfromthe1846'ProvincialLunaticAsylum,'longthoughttobelost,arereturnedtoCAMHandhung
fromtheLegalHearingRoom.
