Artifact Justification:

Planning Instruction and

Designing Learning
Experiences for Students

This is an essay that addresses and justifies the use of my artifacts to demonstrate knowledge of the
TPE domain of planning instruction and designing learning experiences for students.

The first artifact I chose to demonstrate my knowledge of planning instruction and

designing learning experiences for students was my submission for the Teacher Performance
Assessment task 2. This task required that I create a lesson plan and provide the adaptations and
accommodations for students who required them in my class. This artifact meets the
requirements and demonstrates proficiency in this domain because in order to assess what
accommodations are needed, it is required that I find learned about my students. The aspects that
I learned about my students to assess their needs and provide the correct support were: reading
proficiency levels, content knowledge levels, whether they are ELL or not, goals, aspirations,
and any other special needs that the student may have. All of these aspects should be considered
when designing instruction and learning experiences for the students, and that is why I chose this
artifact for this domain.
The second artifact that I chose to demonstrate my knowledge in this domain was an
outline of content area literacy. I chose this artifact because instructional planning is a key
component to the TPE of planning instruction and designing learning experiences for students.
The method that is used in this lesson outline is a reciprocal teaching method. This method has
been proven to improve non-fiction literacy content, specifically enhancing the students ability
to predict, clarify, question, and summarize the content. I feel that the larger variety of
instructional planning that is used can only enhance the student learning experience.
The last artifact that I chose to demonstrate understanding and achievement of this
domain was a literary review of instructional planning. For this literary review, I not only
explored some of the ideas that the text provided for effected instructional planning, but I also
applied them to an analysis of a lesson plan. The main idea of the literary review was that of the
1/3 Plus Model. That means that each instructional plan should consider how the lesson meets

the needs of the each achievement level (separated by group: upper, middle, and lower), and also
those with special needs (this is the Plus). This idea can provide additional insight to
instructional planning due to that it requires that all the needs of the class are being taken into
consideration when instructional planning. This model also requires that you learn about the
students needs when instructional planning. This is a great way to plan instruction while
designing learning experiences for students.
